BUDDY HAS ONE DAY LEFT TO LIVE UNLESS THE HEARING EXTENDS HIS RESTRAINING ORDER. PLEASE PEOPLE SIGN AND SHARE THIS PETITION. IT IS A BEACON OF HOPE IN A DESPERATE SITUATION!
On November 1st a Golden Retriever Mix named Buddy attacked a young girl, who allegedly provoked him by screaming in his face. The child's mother disputes this but a signed avvidavit from objctive witnesses indicates otherwise. Buddy reacted defensively to what he perceived as a threat, as any mammal would, and scratched and bit her. She suffered minor injuries, requiring a few stitches. Now Animal Services has seized the dog, who was originally scheduled for execution in early November. A lawyer for the dog's family managed to obtain a temporary restraining order, while she fights to appeal Buddy's sentence. Unfortunately, Texas law provides no due process and he could be executed as early as tomorrow afternoon. Buddy has no history of aggression and is known by his neighbors as being a very friendly and fun loving dog.
I don't hold any ill will toward the child, and I hope she recovers from her wounds, but it was definitely her own fault. Her mother holds some culpability as well, for not keeping her child out of the face of an animal. The poor dog was just reacting defensively as any mammal would in that sort of situation. Why do convicts get second chances but dogs are immediately executed for any sign of aggression? For goodness sake, they have a frontal lobe too! The dog was probably instantly sorry for any damage he inflicted. I've seen guilt on dog's faces and I'm sure he felt bad about it. And it's not as if he permanently maimed her. The law is too vague in SA about this. They say an animal can be put down for causing "serious bodily injury" but they don't explain what means. A few stitches and scratches don't fit that phrase in my opinion.
Buddy's family have even offered to pay for the child's medical bills which is above and beyond the call of duty in my opinion. The real crime here will be killing the dog and hurting the elderly couple who love him very much. They did nothing wrong, and there dog reacted only the way any being would after feeling threatened.
I have written a petition and called a local newspaper in San Antonio to discuss it. The petition has already gathered over 1500 signatures in just one day. The petitions link has been sent to Buddy's lawyer, as well as the newspaper who plans to include it in the story he writes about Buddy tomorrow. Please go sign the petition and add your thoughts in the comments section. We CAN put a stop this poor dog's execution if we all make our voices heard loud and clear.
