EMERGENCY APPEAL FOR THE SRI LANKAN DOGS Death and animal suffering in Sri Lanka 24th May 2007Imagine a place where puppies are placed in gas chambers or have their eyes pecked out by crows on a rubbish tip. A place where dogs are beaten, doused with fuel, mutilated, stoned, scalded with boiling water or stabbed with pole syringes carrying strychnine. A place where pet dogs spend their entire lives tethered outside, often with rope embedded in the necks, or imprisoned in small cages until they die. Imagine a place where cattle are pickaxed to death, many giving birth during the carnage, whist others facing the same brutal fate, watch and wait in silence for their turn. This horror of all horrors is the daily reality for the animals of Sri Lanka. As well as humans, the strays also have to contend with blood parasite diseases caused by ticks and mosquitos-Filaria, Ehrlichiosis and Babesia. They have no hope of being blood tested or treated. They have no hope of being treated when they are injured on the roads and can survive for days howling in agony by the roadside with fractured spines and maggot infested wounds. No-one will help them, and many locals stone injured and disabled animals. Animal SOS Sri Lanka is a newly formed organisation which will soon be a registered charity. We offer the only hope for the animals of Sri Lanka, a country where animal welfare is non existent. The vision is Kim Cooling's, a former nurse and Social Worker, who has worked tirelessly with her friend Morag Longmuir to save as many strays as they can and to highlight the terrible plight of animals in Sri Lanka. Kim and Morag receive no outside funding and work full time to pay for their rescue work during their holidays. Kim's work is widely respected in Sri Lanka and articles about her endeavours have been reported in national newspapers in Sri Lanka as well as the UK Lanka Times here in the UK. Our aims are-
To purchase some land and build a well equipped veterinary clinic for the strays who are suffering and dying by the roadside. Our British trained Veterinary nurse will manage the clinic and many British vets have offered to assist us with the sterilisation programme. We will also employ a resident Sri Lankan vet and other local staff to care for the animals.
To initiate a humane canine control programme through sterilisation
To initiate a vaccination programme
To initiate an education programme aiming at the younger generations to change the cycle of inherent cruelty, indifference and ignorance that prevails and compounds the animals suffering
To have an adoption scheme for puppies who are dumped on garbage tips or in the road. Many pups have their eyes pecked out by the crows.
To have a refuge for some disabled dogs who are often stoned and scalded by locals
To lobby the government to bring about effective legislation to protect all animals from the terrible suffering they presently endure. We estimate that we will require around £65,000-£75,000 for the land and building works, and our annual running costs will be around £30, 000. To date we have less than £1000, and we have donated some of this ourselves to qualify for charity status. Sadly, the large wealthy charities with their own agendas get all the funds. The small hands on groups making the greatest difference, struggle to survive. We urgently require funds to make this vision possible. It really is the only hope for Sri Lanka's animals. We also require a celebrity to act as our Patron, which will raise the profile of our organisation. We have many success stories-the dogs Kim and Morag have saved from death and terrible suffering. These are some of them -
Lavinia-Rescued from street in Colombo in an emaciated state. She was stoned by locals. She required -3 months veterinary treatment in Sri Lanka for a massive TVT, (underwent vaginal repair, spay) Ehrlichiosis, filaria, mange. Lavinia now lives with Kim in London
Sid staggered over to Kim and Morag from nowhere and collapsed at their feet. He had been badly beaten and his front legs broken. He was take to the vets, and Sid's chances of survival were slim. He was suffering from a high count of filaria, emaciation, mange, and endured 10 weeks chemotherapy for a large TVT on his genitals. He survived and is the most courageous boy. Sid lives with Kim in London. They adore one another. Sid is disabled due to his fractured legs, but loves his life as a pampered western pooch Sooby used to hide from the gas vans when they visited the Mount Lavinia area near Colombo. All the other dogs in the area were taken to the infamous dog pounds and gassed. Sooby had her tail hacked off by locals for fun, and Kim and Morag decided to get her out of the country to ensure she had a life. She is best friends with Sid and lives with Kim in London. More rescued dogs from Sri Lanka-The lucky ones-pups found in the road
EMERGENCY APPEAL FOR THE SRI LANKAN DOGS.......
SDGA have received this emergency appeal from Kim Cooling, in our opinion a marvellous lady who performs miracles to alleviate the suffering of Sri Lankan dogs with her friend Morag. We would like to help them by putting out this important appeal to everyone so they can receive donations to set up a clinic for the dogs and an education programme for the people of Sri Lanka to improve animal welfare which is so desperately needed out there. Kim and Morag have dedicated their lives to these animals and they use their own personal funds to re-home these dogs and pay for all their veterinary treatment. They are angels and we want to put them in touch with other angels out there who can help and assist them in their most valuable work for the animals. All of us make the difference in this world and previous experience has shown us that when like minded people club together, miracles can happen!!! If you think you can help to make a difference to Kim and Morag and the animals of Sri Lanka please contact Kim now. All donations and homes offered for these dogs will be gratefully received. Contact Kim on Tel - 07773 746108 or Coolingkim@aol.com Thank you for your much needed support. Muhatma Ghandi once said - "The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated" Let's help Sri Lanka become a great nation by helping them to treat their animals with dignity and respect!!! Best wishes SDGA team All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing” (Edmund Burke) |

I deleted a few posts as I find it ridulous that people are fighting about this when they should be HELPING each other to HELP ANIMALS and I feel I hoped to bring to light a siutation and need, not to promote fighting and mud slinging....SO...the posts that are left are those with an interest in this severe need and I hope helps comes to this group to help the many many animals in Sri Lanka, and hope the normal "human issues and egos" stop interferring with what IS important...The ANIMALS!...thanks ya'll! |

Ok well this is ridiculous and this is exactly what I was talking about....ACTING LIKE CHILDREN WHEN YOU SHOULD BE HELPING EACH OTHER TO HELP ANIMALS AND Georgianna you continue to respond to everything someone says, there is no need to defend yourself but it keeps this childish behavior going on. THIS IS WHY animals do NOT get the help they need!..HUMANS..are the bain of existance, with the egos and tempers and destructive behavior...
I posted this for INFORMATION NOT FOR A SLUG FEST BASH ALL.....any more negative comments will be deleted and I will delte these now!.....ANYONE who wants to help these animals please do so!..I DO not post these issues for PEOPLE!...This is not to promote people, or to do anything other than help animals so grow up all of you who have nothing better to do than whine and complain and attact each other!....enough said! |

OK NOW I HAVE DELETED ALL THE POSTS with your comments and argumentative battering back and forth...I do not want to hear of the Murry Foundation or any other person who has anything negative to say about this or anything else!...THIS IS TO HELP ANIMALS AND TO BRING TO LIGHT THIS GROUP.....if others are helping animals there good and I hope you are doing a great job and if not I hope you will get your just due, because everyone should have ALL ANIMALS at their best interest and to work together and do the best, professional and compassionate job they can do and if not get the hell out of the rescue/business!...Animals need HELP AND CARE, not bickering and egotistical or callous and careless neglegant humans!.....CARE FOR ANIMALS AND HELP OR SHUT THE HELL UP! |

I would like to begin by saying that I have believed for some considerable time that the reason why there is so much animal suffering in this world is because of those who are supposed to be helping the animals, and have the funds to do so, are embroiled in the common human vices - envy, greed, jealousy, deceit, dominance and pettiness. The large groups are as bad as the smaller groups and I am deeply saddened by this because the losers are always the animals. Our new group and our good reputation appear to be a threat to some individuals. All I can say is that it is their problem not ours. My priority always has, and always will be, the animals.
Animal SOS Sri Lanka was formed to offer hope for the animals in Sri Lanka. My vision to help the innocent and forgotten strays who never asked to be born into such a cruel and hostile world is something that I dream and pray for every night.
My own rescued Sri Lankan street dogs, all of whom are near me as I write this, are a sad and constant reminder of the ones we had to leave behind. I never forget them, not for one moment. It's the despair in their eyes that really gets you. They seem to know they are born to suffer and die, and no-one will help them. Even the puppies are sad. They don't play like the puppies here because only happy dogs play. There is little happiness for many animals in Sri Lanka. Only darkness and despair. We strive to change that. My friend and I save as many strays as we can without any donations and funded from our own wages. Our commitment and dedication to help these animals is 100%. We work 12 hour shifts when we are out there and go out at night to feed and treat the starving dogs and cats. The UK Lanka Times recently published an article about my commitment to help the strays in Sri Lanka and our reputation there is excellent. Today I took 2 of our Sri Lankan rescued puppies who have just completed their quarantine, to a park in London near the kennels. I sat with them in the sunshine and reflected on the horrors we had saved from. One from a rubbish tip being attacked by crows who would have pecked her eyes out, and a dear little puppy we named Joey found on a road near a station sitting loyally by his ailing sister-Flora, who had been hit by a car and seriously injured. Flora survived because we happened to be there and took her to the best equipped vets in Sri Lanka for surgery. She is now homed with an Italian couple working in Colombo. As for Joey, his tail never stopped wagging as we walked through the park, looking at the birds and the bees and embracing the life we had given him in England. The vision of Animal SOS Sri Lanka will give other strays a chance of a life and future in Sri Lanka. We formed a larger group-Animal SOS Sri Lanka, because we are registering as a Charity and require more dedicated people to help us achieve my vision. The group consists of caring and professional individuals-a retired medical doctor, a veterinary nurse, an animal rescuer who has recently won an award for her animal rescue work, my friend who works for the police, and myself a qualified Social Worker and former nurse. We have a mountain to climb, but together, I know we can make a difference in Sri Lanka. There is one stumbiling block-raising the funds to do so. Please, Please, help us achieve a better future for Sri Lanka's suffering animals. Their need is so great.
