Police Want To Find Owner Of Severely Abused Dog

Pit Bull Found Crawling In Englewood

(CBS4) ENGLEWOOD, Colo. The Colorado Humane Society and Englewood Police are investigating what they say is the worst case of animal abuse they have ever seen. A dog was found in the city suffering from severe abuse because of an illness.

Police said they believe someone dumped the dog less than a mile from the Humane Society offices to try to get rid of it. Officers are looking for the dog's owner.

An animal control officer found the pit bull along South Platte River Drive. The dog was crawling, dragging a 6 pound tumor between her legs. It wasn't wearing a tag.

"Usually (the tumors) are the size of a BB," said Lara Riggenbach of the Colorado Humane Society. "This has been going on obviously for at least a year."

Veterinarians said the animal is currently not in any pain because it has been given large doses of narcotics and pain medication.

"It's probably an auto-immune (issue), like lupus," Riggenbach said. "That once again has been going on for years and years and is totally out of control."

Humane Society officials said the easy thing to do would be to put her down, but they would like to try and help the dog heal.

"Absolutely she deserves a second chance," Riggenbach said. "If any animal does, it's the cases of cruelty and neglect. You want to get them out of pain."

Vets plan to remove the tumor once the dog is stable.

They said the tumor would not have been there if the dog had been spayed. It's one reason experts encourage owners to spay or neuter their animals.

I'm in contact with Paula at the Colorado Humane Society. I made an earlier post. Elmi needs donations to save her life. Please lets not have Elmi be another death from abuse I refuse to let this happen. Please donate. I hope to be able to visit her one day when she is up to having visitors and I will take pics. This is the latest info from Paula:

Amy,

Thanks so much for re-posting the information about our new patient on your myspace and Care2 sites! We have received enough donations for her blood transfusion, but still need more for additional medications and her upcoming surgery. She is doing better today, but still not out of the woods, but what a fighter! She is such a sweetheart, I will never understand how some people can be so heartless. However, I am a huge believer in karma...they will reap what they sow.
Also, we need more friends on myspace and more local folks like you to volunteer, so if you can spread the word it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again. You are awesome.

All the best,
Paula Roth
CHS

This is her myspace profile address if you would like to add her to your friends list.

I have 6 cats, and could never imagine them hurting in any way. I have saved many stary cats, and had to put juat a few down. I hate making the decision to euthanize, but if the animal is suffering, what better way to show how much you love them, than to end the suufering.

My dog was never neutered (I used to think it was cruel to a male especially as a little girl). Ultimately, I realized he should have been. He ended up having a long battle with cancer (testicular, lungs, nasal/oral). If you take good enough care of a dog that they live long enough,... they can end up getting cancer from the hormones being in the system,... from amount or length of time. I can vouch for neutering and spaying protecting from cancer/tumors down the road. It happened in my dog. (was also kicked into gear by the teeth spray/anaesthesia for teeth cleaning,... and possibly licking briefly a cancer wound at a dog park, or dog food). If there is a pitbull ban in Denver,.... that probably prevented the owners from feeling like they could seek help.
