Pets spared at one shelter
04:50 PM Mountain Standard Time on Thursday, June 28, 2007
By Kim Kapilovic / 3TV producerMaricopa County Animal Care and Control is on a winning streak. They're winning the battle against euthanasia. The animals are now surviving in shelters. For almost two years now, workers have not had to put down any healthy animals. MCAAC is one of the largest in the country, taking in 55,000 animals every year. The good news is 45 percent of them will be saved this year. "We're looking for another family pet," Christina Martinez said. "Someone stole our dog a few months ago and the kids need a family pet." It's people like that who are helping save lives. "Well, I guess a little more than the last 18 months now we have not had to euthanize any of our healthy animals that come in to our shelter," said Aprille Hollis, a spokeswoman. Between 10,000 and 15,000 dogs are adopted out every year and Hollis said a lot of that has to do with the rise of animal-care groups. "We have a bunch of really good partnerships with what's called our New Hope groups and the New Hopes come in and basically take animals that we call treatables," she said. "They just need a little more TLC to get better to be adoptable." And that gives the healthy animals inside the shelter a longer stay, giving them a better chance at getting adopted. But they still have to put down the animals they deem unhealthy or nonadoptable. "We get a lot of animals that have been on the street too long and behaviorly they're just shot," Hollis said. "There is no hope to make them adoptable." Some injured and vicious animals also get put down, but that's not all. "We get a lot of animals. -- puppies and kittens -- that are so small, that haven't been weaned from their parents yet, their mom yet, and there's no way for us to take care of them in this facility," Hollis said. About 28,000 animals will still have to be put down this year, but that's down from a little more than 30,000 last year, but 45 percent will be saved this year. The best way to prevent euthanasia is to license your pet and have them spayed or neutered. The cost is $85 for dogs and $65 for cats for spay, neuter, shots and a license.
