TELL BUSH & CONGRESS TO FUND AMERICA'S FUTURE FIRST! On February 6, 2006, President Bush announced his proposed federal budget for Fiscal Year 2007. In an effort to "secure America", he proposes a dramatic increase in military funding - with significant cuts to social services like health, education, housing, and nutrition. These cuts fall disproportionately on women, children, the elderly, and the poor. http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/445957839

TELL BUSH & CONGRESS THE 10 WAYS TO END AMERICA'S OIL ADDICTION! If the President is serious about addressing our dangerous addiction, we believe there's no better time than the present to get started. So we're offering our elected officials 10 ways they can get started on the path to energy independence: -Significantly raise fuel economy standards for automobiles and eliminate the SUV loophole; -Follow the lead of 22 states including Texas and pass a federal renewable energy standard; -Expand the use of current technology to increase energy efficiency and conservation; -Make real, meaningful investments toward putting clean, cheap, renewable energy sources, like wind and solar power in use now (not just studying their use); -No more secret, energy task forces where oil company lobbyists write our energy and environmental policies; -Increase investment in public transportation; -Put more fuel-efficient hybrid cars and trucks on the road; -Provide greater tax incentives for car pooling; -Increase "Green Building" tax credits; -Stop the giveaways by Congress to Big Oil and gas companies already reaping sky-high, record profits. -Take Action NOW: Tell the President and Congress they can take steps to break our dangerous addiction! http://action.lcv.org/campaign/10_ways

HELP STOP EXTINCTION OF INDIGINEOUS PEOPLE, RAINFORESTS, & THE ORANGUTAN (Sent by Mattttty Vegan, http://www.care2.com/c2c/people/profile.html?pid=887998709 ) Watch out for Palm Oil or Palm Kernal Oil - the planting and extraction of these products threaten the Orangutan with extinction in as little as ten years. They also fuel the burning of tropical rainforests in the third world, as well as pushing indigenous people from their ancestrial homelands, which often ends in violence. Please read the ingredients to the products you are eating/using, and if they use palm oil, call or e-mail the company using feedback forms from their website. Feel free to copy this exact letter. Sample Letter to companies who source Palm Oil: I've been consuming your products for many few years now. However, you source Palm Oil in your product(s) _______, which disappointed me. This past September, a report was published by Friends of the Earth and orangutan conservation groups, which concludes that without urgent intervention the palm oil trade could cause the extinction of the orangutan, Asia's only great ape, within 12 years. Environmental groups have warned for years that oil palm plantations are associated with rainforest destruction as well as human rights abuse. Research by Friends of the Earth shows that the forest fires which ravaged the island of Sumatra in August, and continue to burn today, were mostly set by palm oil companies clearing land to set up their plantations. This practice also threatens indigenous people who are forced to give up their ancestrial homelands for palm plantations. This conflict often ends in bloodshed. If you type "palm oil AND orangutan extinction" in any search engine, you can research this on your own. However, the articles I just quoted from above can be found at: http://www.organicconsumers.org/Politics/ palmoil100305.cfm and also http://www.orangutan.org.uk/press/view-press.php?id=0f2dd635db750f4d20e006ad86e66452 I look foward to hearing that your company is either phasing out the use of, or looking for alternatives to palm oil, or taking steps to ensure that you do not buy palm oil from destructive sources in a timely fashion.

PROTECT KIDS FROM TOBACCO President Bush refuses to take action to protect kids around the globe from tobacco! The United States still has not ratified the international tobacco treaty, called the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). This groundbreaking treaty will protect kids all over the world from the dangers of tobacco. But despite the fact that over 115 countries have ratified this important treaty, the U.S. has not! It's time for the White House to hear our message loud and clear - protect kids around the world from tobacco - so we're launching a Virtual Protest! IMPACT OF CONSUMER PURCHASES Many Consumers put little, if any, thought into the social, environmental and nutritional implications of their purchases. This lack of concern has created a demand for products that are damaging to the Earth and our overall quality of life. As long as demand for these products exists, they will continue to fill our local grocery stores regardless of their harmful effects. The True Cost Tour is an audio tour that travels with you through a typical grocery store and reveals the "true cost" of several everyday products. Through environmental, societal, and nutritional lenses, the tour offers insight into these everyday products and seeks to empower the consumer. http://truecosttour.org/home.html http://truecosttour.org/resources.html
THE 10 BEST THINGS ABOUT GLOBAL WARMING So who says we don't have a sense of humor? This is our response to the announced "Celebrate Global Warming Day." While we think anyone who dismises global warming as harmless is a certified diaperhead, even we can think of a few things to celebrate: The Ten Best Things about Global Warming: 10. Why pay for tattoos when melanoma's free? 9. No more pesky weeds. In fact, no more pesky plants. 8. Nile Encephalitis: not just for Egyptians anymore. 7. Furnaces convert easily into tornado shelters. 6. Helsinki: the new Riviera. 5. Middle East oil producers feel right at home— everywhere. 4. Golfers only need a putter and a sand wedge. 3. For those who can't get enough of global warming. One word: Venus. 2. Steaks, medium rare, on the hoof. 1. Three thongs and you're dressed! STUDENTS CAMPAIGN AGAINST HUNGER & HOMELESSNESS - CALENDAR OF EVENTS
We're excited to invite you all to join us for a spring semester filled with exciting events and new programs, all in our quest to alleviate and end hunger and homelessness in America. Please check out the program descriptions below, and also visit our recently updated website, with more information being posted each week.
2006 Spring Summit on Hunger and Homelessness February 25-26, 2006 Travel to historic Boston to join 150 students from up and down the east coast for an amazing weekend filled with workshops, panel discussions, and fun networking opportunities. The Spring Summit will be an invaluable experience for all anti-hunger and homelessness activists, giving you the latest information about the issues and actions taking place. You will also be able to learn from some of the top anti-hunger and homelessness leaders from New England and in Washington, DC and meet other student leaders from across the East Coast. Register to attend the Summit at www.studentsagainsthunger.org/summit.
22nd Annual Hunger Cleanup April 8, 2006 This spring, join thousands of students from around the country who are committed to alleviating and ending hunger and homelessness, by participating in the 22nd Annual Hunger Cleanup. The Cleanup is one of the largest student-run fundraising and community service a-thons in the country. Through the Cleanup, students will roll up their sleeves and grab paintbrushes, hammers, and rakes to volunteer at local hunger and homelessness relief agencies. Volunteer projects include painting local shelters, planting community gardens, and repairing and cleaning food banks. Not only will students offer much needed volunteer power, but they will also raise thousands of dollars that will benefit important local service agencies, as well as national and international hunger and homelessness relief agencies. Your school can either coordinate its own Cleanup or join an established local event. Register to participate in the Cleanup at www.hungercleanup.org.
Feinstein Challenge - March and April Does your school currently organize a big food drive or fundraiser that benefits a local hunger relief agency? If so, we have a cool new opportunity for you that will significantly increase your impact. This spring, the National Student Campaign has teamed up with the Feinstein Foundation's annual spring Challenge to End Hunger, a $1 million giveaway to hunger relief agencies that run food and fundraising drives during the months of March and April. Each participating agency receives a portion of the $1 million based on the amount of food and money it collects during this time period. In other words, the more food and money an agency and school collects, the more money the beneficiary will receive from the Feinstein Challenge. So, organize dorm competitions or a neighborhood food drive, partner with a local elementary or high school, participate in the Hunger Cleanup, and dust off those BIG ideas you have been sitting on for years - now is the time to participate in one of the greatest grassroots fundraising efforts to end hunger in America. With just a little work, we can do even more to alleviate and end hunger in our communities! Learn more about the Feinstein Challenge at www.studentsagainsthunger.org.
To the Streets - National Sleep-Out and Day of Action - March 31, 2006 Join community members and students from across the country and Puerto Rico who will spend the night out on the streets to raise awareness and political will to combat the growing poverty in our cities, states and nation. This event is inspired by North Park University students who organized a sleep out in February 2005 that involved dozens of students who slept out in the snow and freezing rain and collected 4,000 signatures in support of affordable housing throughout the evening. This year, North Park students have teamed up with the National Student Campaign and Call to Renewal to make the event even BIGGER by encouraging students to organize small local sleep outs or join other schools, community groups, and individuals experiencing homelessness in large cities. Learn more at www.tothestreets.org.
Student Advocacy Project The National Student Campaign created the Student Advocacy Project in response to growing student interest in linking community service and public policy. Students often wonder what their politicians in Washington D.C. or the state capitol can do to help people in need. The Student Advocacy Project educates students about important issues, and combines the resources of the anti-poverty movement and the grassroots power of students nationwide. Check out the Student Advocacy Project website for updates and action alerts at www.studentsagainsthunger.org/advocacy.
Spring Activist Training Tour This spring, the staff of the National Student Campaign will travel to schools across the country to speak on various issues related to hunger and homelessness and to teach activist training session to strengthen organizing skills. Also, the National Student Campaign staff frequently speaks during Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, social justice lecture series, brown bag lunch discussion, and other campus-wide events. Choose from our sample speaking topics and training session or create a program right for your campus at www.studentsagainsthunger.org.
