I did more than sign the petition, here's what I wrote to Administrator Johnson...
Thank you in advance for reading my message. I want you to know, I am fed-up with business as usual. If we continue at the rate we're going your grandchildren and mine will NOT have the same quality of life some of us have had. To think even for a second that allowing "known" personal and environmental hazards is ok is disgraceful!
I want no part of these disgraceful acts, nor do I want people in places of authority to undermine our existence for more money in their wallets. I do NOT approve of how things have been handled. I expect that my email to you will count as the voice of 10,000.
That said... I urge you to grant California the waiver it needs under the Clean Air Act to limit global warming pollution from passenger vehicles. As you know, the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping emissions are "air pollutants" under the Clean Air Act and you do have the authority to regulate them.
A federal judge recently ruled that California has the right to lead the way in limiting such pollution from passenger vehicles. I believe that ALL passenger vehicles should get nearly 100 MPG by the year 2012 - the technology is there, let's dump the politics and do the right thing.
Fourteen other states are adopting California's tailpipe emissions standards, representing more than forty percent of the U.S. auto market. Vehicles are the second largest source of America's global warming pollution.
Scientists agree that unless we reduce global warming pollution significantly in the next 50 years, average temperatures could rise another 3 to 9 degrees in the United States alone during this century, causing more heat waves, droughts and wildfires, heavier rains and flooding, rising sea levels, melting tundra, and widespread loss of wildlife and their habitat, including the potential extinction of many species.
Many scientists and biologists say that by 2050 some 50% or more of earth's species will be or will be on the verge of extinction... what makes "us" think that we will not be one of those species!? Look around, all of the indicators are there. We're not as smart as we think.
Within the past 50 years alone, species of migratory birds HAVE declined 40-80% from pollution and urban sprawl. Our Honey Bee population is in danger. The foods "we" eat rely on both bird's and bee's. If things like GM seeds/crops, pollution, urban sprawl, etc., don't change drastically we WILL be one of those endangered species within the next 50 years!
We are not an island. We are very closely connected and rely on nature, and the condition of nature for our very own survival. I do not want to see our environment, nor our own species, become threatened because of some stupid industry, power/greed, or money going into someone's wallet as being the reason we find ourselves in a dire position.
Science finding "cures" for conditions is NOT going to fix the bee's, just as finding cures for diabetes will not stop it from occurring. We need to fix "us," our relationship to the planet. We NEED to stop thinking in these old conditioned ways, bust open the door for serious growth, renewal, and healing. Cures do NOT heal, they simply mask the symptoms - what a stupid way for the most intelligent species on earth to live, we deserve to go extinct with thinking like that.
I am calling on you to help avert these grave dangers by immediately granting California the waiver it needs to start reducing its global warming pollution.
Might I suggest a solution for those who don't want change, build a space-craft, put them on it, and let them go live somewhere else. I'm sick and tired of watching the destruction to our environment and human health. I love this beautiful planet, I do not ant to see our environment collapse because of stupid and careless things my species did. Let's wake up, like it or not, and set a new ball into motion immediately. Thank you for your help.
