The Unbearable Trade in Bear Parts and Bile
Caged Bear - Bear Bile Farm

There are about 7,000 bears on bear-bile farms in China. The captive animals are used to supply the voracious Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) market. Bear bile has been an ingredient in TCM for thousands of years, but intensive bear farming only came into existence in the 1980s when China's supply of wild bears began running low. The farms, however, have created a new set of problems.



Milking


Usually bile is extracted from the bears' gallbladders twice a day through a surgically implanted tube. The process, called "milking," produces from .338 to .676 oz. (10–20 ml.) of bile each time.


Milking is clearly painful for the bears, who are often seen moaning and chewing their paws during the process.

Thousands of Moon Bears across China are imprisoned in cages no bigger than their own bodies and endure the agony of daily bile extraction through the so-called humane, 'free-dripping' method of bile extraction. This method sees a permanent infected hole, or fistula, carved through the bear's abdomen into the gall bladder, through which the farmer forces an unhygienic tube to drain the bile. But help is on the way...

After years of negotiation, Animals Asia signed an historic agreement with the China Wildlife Conservation Association and the Sichuan Forestry Department to rescue 500 farmed, endangered Moon Bears and to work together to end bear farming.

Animals Asia has already closed over 41 bear farms and rescued over 197 Moon Bears. Construction of a permanent semi-natural sanctuary is underway and bears continue to pour into our Rescue Centre in China to begin a new life of freedom.

"We the undersigned, thank the Chinese Government for closing the farms and releasing 500 bears into the care of Animals Asia. We ask that you continue to promote the herbal and synthetic alternatives to bear bile and urgently appeal to you to end bear farming by the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008."

using bear bile in medicine is gross and its hurting the bears.they did nothing to deserve it! SO FREE THEM ALL!!!!!!!!
