Islam lays great emphasis on animal rights and man's responsibility for their welfare. Below are a few short selections as examples from the Qur'an and Hadith (sayings of the Prophet Muhammad), edited by Dr. Yasin Dutton, lecturer in Islamic Studies, Edinburgh University. These and other selections are published in a leaflet which is produced by the WSPA in collaboration with the Islamic Foundation for Ecology and Environmental Sciences.

It is related from Abu Hurayra, from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, that a prositute once saw a dog on a very hot day going round and round a well, lolling its tongue becaue of its thirst. She drew some water for it using her shoe and [for this action] all her sins were forgiven her. The Prophet was asked: 'Messenger of God, are we rewarded for kindness towards animals?' He said, 'There is a reward for kindness to every living being.'

It is related from Abdallah ibn Umar that the messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "A woman was once punished [after death] because of a cat she kept confined until it died and because of this she had entered the Fire. She had neither given it food or drink while confining it, nor had she left it free to eat the creatures of the earth."

It is related from Yahya ibn Sa'id that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was seen wiping the face of his horse with his shoulder cloth. When he was asked why he was doing that he said: "Last night I was reprimanded [by Allah] about horses."

It is related from Abu al-Darda' that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, forbade eating mujathana animals; that is, animals which have been tied up and shot at with arrows.

It is related from Sahl ibn al-Handhaliyya that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, once passed by a camel [that was so emaciated that] its back had almost reached its stomach and he said: "Fear Allah in these beasts who cannot speak. [Only] ride them when they are in good health and [only] eat them when they are in good health."

It is related from Ibn Umar that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, cursed those who used anything living as a target.

Ibn Umar said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say, 'Whoever mutilates a living creature and then does not repent, Allah will mutilate him on the Day of Judgement."

It is related from A'isha that she was once riding on a camel that was difficult to handle. She began pushing it and the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said to her, "You should be gentle [with it]."

"And the earth, He has assigned it to all living creatures." (Qu'ran, 55:10)

It is related from Abu Hurayra that the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "O Messenger of Allah! Is there reward for us in animals?" He said, "There is reward in every [creature with a] moist liver" (i.e. in acting kindly towards every living creature).

It is related from Shaddd ibn Aws that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "Allah has prescribed excellence in everything. So if you kill, kill well; and if you slaughter, slaughter well. Let each one of you sharpen his blade and spare suffering to the animal he slaughters."

amin, all of this deals with welfare, not any rights for non humans... unfortunately! Even though i do not believe in any kind of superior being, i would be really happy to read anything related to the right of non humans not to be treated a s resources.
Anyway, thanx for the post.

i disagree that all this deals with only welfare. reading all of these lessons given by one person as a whole rather than each lesson on it's own should show that animals are as much a part of this world as humans. they have the same rights as humans. IF it is necessary to exploit animals as was the case thousands of yrs ago (when these lessons were first given to the arab ppl) before cars and planes for travel, and tractors and hoists for construction, then animals should be well taken care of and respected for the blessing of having them there to HELP us.

by no means to i imagine that these lessons are to say that animals SHOULD be exploited, on the contrary..

all animals should have the same right to life like humans, and they should be respected in the same way, they should never be abused, or killed
only for their furs, or be killed for funlike huntings for example like fox hunting in england,
if we kill all animals, all nature god-given, we
do also kill ourselves : we are all of us : only guests of nature.....for so long we let live, and
so we will also go on living .....by oxygen,h2o
and all the necessities we have for living !!!!!
may GOD give us insight and help to do the right
things while it is still possible !!!!!!!HERE ON OUR???? PLANET EARTH !!!!!!!!!
