Blog: Getting in the way of the slaughter truck...

Greetings,I just now found this group and I'm happy to join.As a long distance trucker for many years I have a story to share about slaughter trucks....I had stopped outside North Platte Nebraska to get coffee and as I was walking to my truck I came upon a tractor trailer loaded with horses. As the horses were stacked double,I started asking questions of the driver....The horses were bound for slaughter in North Platte, just about forty miles away. There was a paint mare down in the floor and she couldn't get up due to crowding and I felt also a lack of hope and giving up on her part. The driver had a cattle prod and he was shocking her on the face, the eye,the neck, over and over trying to get her to stand. Needless to say,we had words, and he informed me that other than a few of the horses, most had been bred just to go to slaughter from one farm.....I was furious,I cried and pleaded with him to stop shocking her as she could not get up for lack of room to stand. He put the prod down for a moment and it made its way into my hand and my truck from there...I couldn't stop him from taking the horses on to their deaths, but I did give him some things to think about.....To their credit, the people of North Platte didn't want a horse slaughter plant there and several times when I came through they had cut fence and released horses to escape any way they could....Just in protest of the plant.I saw so many trucks while I was driving, and thank god only a couple loaded with horses for it always broke my heart and made me angry to the point of doing something to end up in jail if I were caught.Lets just say that between the slaughter houses and the plight of the mustangs I've cut my share of fence lines....If only more people would do the same,we could at least give them a few problems.Perhaps its wrong of me to encourage this behavior, but I'm a horse person and would do anything in my power to protect them in any way I can.And I don't care who likes it or not. They are beautiful creatures and my life would be empty without my horses...If I could go back,I'd still carry wire cutters in my truck and I'd still be cutting fences across america!! As for the trucks that carry our noble friends to their death, its bad enough reading about it,I saw things first hand that still give me nightmares and make me sick to think about. The horses so tired, hungry, thirsty, many injured from kicks and falling to be trampled by other horses that had no choice, they were just fighting to remain standing   too. I saw babys no more than three months old to the older horses that I knew had to of been some back yard person's pet who knew no better. At least thats what they claim, but I'd never sell a horse at auction no matter what or why. That isn't loyalty on the humans part, its betrayal.I wish I could do  more to help these animals,I wish the people that vote for slaughter could witness the conditions on the trailers and the look in the horses eyes. They know.I swear they know they are going to their deaths. They just can't scream for help or escape.I have to beleive that theres a special place in hell for those who abuse animals.....Its how I hold on...

I also hope that people who take hormone replacement therapy check into the ingredients. Premarin and a few other products are made from derivatives of pregnant mares urine. The are synthetic hormone treatments also available.
Maybe if the market drops for these products, fewer horses will be killed.
(just a thought.)

I agree with you. I have concerns about people who can torture animals without remorse.
I hope they pay for it through karma.

Spreading the word can cut down on the numbers in a few ways. More people will fight it, and people will see stuff like what Tanya mentioned and adjust what they do which will also cut down on the senseless deaths.

I know it sounds impossible, but just focus on doing what you can and don't think about it other than that. If you do let it get to you, it will eat your energy and make it so that you can't do anything to help, so stay strong and confident that we will change things, and just send out the word like you did here.

By telling people about it, you are cutting down the fences of ignorance.

Oh, almost forgot, post this on the bulletin board on my site if you want (and feel free to post in a few places, I do all the time to make sure people see stuff, so post under animals, and wherever else you see fit): RatManFromMySpace.com

Animals' tortuous journey to death is a burning issue in countries like Iidia. Cows bulls and bufaloes are made to walk for many kms without water/or they are stuffed beyond capacity in trucks/ lorries getting hurt by the horns of other animals fractured bruised very badly.By the time these animals reach the slaughter house they are just pushed down as if they are stones .dragged to the place of kill. They are hung upside down, tied and their throats cut-- they are fleeced as they are conscious not dead still alive --any person with an atom of humane feel will stop eating the stuff brought from these places. We as Animal Welfare Dept people tried to show video of a slaughter house scene for school children. All the schools joined together and protested. We argued "you are making these students cut live frogs and mice and make them see the agony of the animals everyday in your labs,Why should the students be ignorant of the horrors of slaughter house?"
A concerted systematic effort should be made to show videos of the slaughter houses. Then it is possible for Care2 and PETA et al to spread our message of Compassion to all living beings among school children. The bulls and bufaloes are filled with air by by boring holes when they are alive and air is pumped into the bodies to make them heavy and bring more money for the animal owners.
These countries make a hue and cry of their unwmployment problem-- Why cant they create thousands of jobs for checking if the rule relating to slaughter of animals are complied with or not? No. Every one is interested in doing things for profit and publicity.
Compassion in the formative years of life is the foundation stone/wall to prevent Terrorism in their minds when they grow up.

Your story made tears come to my eyes. It's hard to believe that people can be so cruel to such lovely creatures. I'm a horse person too. I feel affiliated to them somehow. If I was there I would be a fence cutter too.

My heart also breaks when I see those trucks..all of them..I want to let the animals free and know I can't possibly do that.
Tanya R. hit the nail on the head when she mentioned Premarin. We do have an overpopulation of horses because of that. There are also other reasons and those are over breeding. Breeders wating that one perfect horse to win the Triple Crown. There are many contributors. Also there are people that raise horses for slaughter just as cattle are raised. I don't want to even think about that.
If the slaughter of horses, for human consumption, is stopped here what is to stop the sellers from shipping the horses to Mexico or Canada for the same purpose?
What is the difference in slaughtering a horse for human consumption than for animal food?
If the USDA steps out of the process who is there to regulate anything?
These are questions I have, I don't think there are any good answers.
Some Native Americans believe that when you die you meet every animal that you harmed or killed unmecifully and that animal has it's revenge on your soul. I so hope that is what happens.

A comment by Linda mentions the USDA -- HA! What a farce! What a waste of taxpayers' money! The USDA does very little to assure the well-being of animals when they are alive. How could we ever expect them to enforce humane slaughter?!

I think the USDA encourages the slaughter of animals -- no matter how that's achieved.

The USDA -- bah!

This is just humans taking advantage of their authority. It disgusts me and I believe what ever comes around, goes around. What these kinda people should do is plead to be forgiven. Thanks for sharing your unreal experience!

It says a lot about a person who eats meat, and refuses to know about the circumstances of these animals' tragic lives and deaths.

So very sad. I can imagine how seeing what you did would give you nightmares. I don't blame you for wanting to free them.

May God smile on your soul, sir. For you have done more than Government inspection agencies seem able (or willing, maybe) to do. Every time I see a truck load of animals, it sickens me to know Governments are allowing these innocent souls to be transported to their deaths! And we are told a war was fought to stop the anhilation of innocent life? ...And we call ourselves civilized? May you come to consider a Vegan lifestyle if you haven't already.

Thank you for cutting those fences. You have saved a few horses so be proud of that as I am that you had done so. There is no reason to have slaughter houses for horses. I cant see killing them for something like that.

I'm totally against sending horses to slaughter, it's a cruels practice!! I work at a horse ranch, I'm working with a horse, her name's Jade, who was sent to the slaughter horse, however she has got to be the most intelligent animal I've ever met!

Thank you so very much for your post. As you may be aware the issue of trucking horses to slaughter was discussed in both the sub-committee on Energy & Commerce as well as the Agriculture committee. These people defended the trucking of horses as being in compliance with a Federal statue, and sadly, it is. The change in the law will not go into effect until 2007.

Please continue to keep your eyes open for horses and all animals that are transported to slaughterhouses. In the USA, animals occupy the same ethical sphere as do children. This means that is is contingent upon society to be aware of their wellbeing since they can't speak for themselves. Thanks again for your post!!!

It is unbelievably cruel and inhumane! I don't understand how animals can be treated this way by anyone. It makes me ashamed of my fellow human beings who do this and go along with this unethical treatment of animals. Keep cutting those fences to free them my fellow humans who love horses, and hopefully soon "The Horse Slaughter Prevention Act" will be a permanent law. Write to your Senators and Representatives to ask them to support "The Horse Slaughter Prevention Act" and make it permanent!

I'm not a horse person I am an animal lover. I was travelling home one day on a long distance journey and we were diverted due to a cattle truck overturning, everyone gasped at the humans injured in the accident, but my heart went out to the cows laying over the motorway injured, dying and dead. I became a vegetarian after watching Countryfile when they did an expose on getting animals to slaughter and slaughter techniques, I gave up meat instantly.

It's not only the horses that are mistreated, the cattle are also! I raise and show cattle. If a steer is marked for slaughter, I am there to make sure it is humane. I know I will get slammed for that, but I am also against mistreatment for the hogs, chickens, etc. Turkeys never see the light of day, for God's sake. Horse slaughter was outlawed in Iowa, even when a broke horse would sell for $20 but for slaughter $400. Yes, there are folks who raise them for slaughter, others turn them loose in National Parks. Not exactly caring for them. Horse lover too.
