Having just received an alert about the Cape Fur seal from Kym, I do want to add my concerns again about South African legislation and ask you all to please publicise the petition about S.A wildlife so we can collect more signatures.
With legislation now being redrafted to fit in with the N.E.M.B.A (national environmental management biodiversity act) guidelines, it’s important for all species that we act now. The N.E.M.B Act is a broad outline which calls for biodiversity. Species such as the Cape Fur Seal would therefore be offered more protection if legislation is redrafted according to the N.E.M.B.A guidelines and those who work hands on to fight for individuals and species are brought in to the process to change laws. I know most or all of you have signed but if possible please do forward this info.

Personally as an animal rights activist, I believe that animal rights in a necessity to saving our planet and all inhabitants. This is why my profile suggests we need to move from an anthropocentric world view (where we see humans as central – above all other species) towards a biocentric world view (where we see our human species as one amongst all others). This means that our so-called conservation actions would not serve people as first priority often at the expense of other species. Non-human animals would not be seen as 'resources". However the enormous division between animal rightists and conservationists is a major obstacle in our common fight. Those who are presently redrafting our hunting legislation for example, are on the whole, big “game” (what kind of a word is that?) hunters themselves and will no doubt re-arrange scientific theory to justify their continuous eradication of species and individual animals.

The following picture I recently took on the land we live  – it shows a tiny sliver of the damage done here due to what the laws allow. I live in The Western Cape where baboons are allowed to be shot all year round, sitting targets in trees at night, with traps, dogs….there is no limitation on how many one can shoot.

 HUNTING PROCLAMATION.jpg
Having observed the troops here for the last four years I have not only witnessed the killing of individuals but serious damage to troop structures - adult males are mostly targeted. As a result most troops here have only one adult male to about 15 adult females – a fact that causes a ripple effect of damage throughout the troop.

We need more signatures for the following petition so please do publicise this further.
Thank you ALL for all the alerts you send my way.
With support in our common cause as always,

Karin.

SAVING SOUTH AFRICA’S PRIMATES / WILDLIFE;

Addressed to the D.E.A.T. and C.N.C, we are asking for all interested parties to be invited to engage in workshops while provincial legislation is redrafted to meet with N.E.M.B.A requirements.
We need laws that will protect all free roaming species before it's too late. Please sign and comment on this urgent petition that calls for an adequate consultative process to bring about the utmost protection and health of biodiversity as required by the N.E.M.B.Act.
