Now I want to be Vegan. I was on Farm Santuary when I saw a video (I didn't even watch, just read the description) and saw that it was about a mother cow chasing after a worker who was dragging her poor baby calf away from her-it was still wet after being born. Then I realized that how can I be for the animals if I consume dairy. Consuming dairy means I am talking away from the calf what it should rightfully have and causing the mother cow pain....and I can't be against cruelty if I do that. I had also been talking to Daniel here on Care2.....and I realized that dairy also contributes to the horrible veal industry as well. I am glad I saw the light, now I can go a step further. So, today I went out and brought Silk soymilk and yogurt...combing through the ingredients on my usual foods (like bread, snacks etc) isn't easy, and I do have leftover cheese and a few more leftover things that I will finish up (so I am not being wasteful to the animal I have already caused pain to). As for eggs, I will try Ener-G egg replacement just cause I am curious. The cold weather has left my mother's pet hens not as interested in laying, so I'll try that until they start again. I heard applesause can be used in place of eggs too...I'll see how that works. No Toffuti ice cream at Jewel, so I made do with sorbet (yes I admit I am weird enough to eat that in January!) Still can't find vegan margerine or sour cream there either....thankfully Peapod sells it, so no big deal, I guess.
I want to stress that I am doing this out of compassion, love and Buddhism, not to be trendy. I just have to say that because I know someone who drinks soymilk, eats veggie burgers and claims to be "vegan-like"...and also eats sushi because it's "healthy". People who do stuff like that ruin it for the true Vegs and Vegans out there and make me so mad! |
