The Cherokee people of Kentucky need to be recognized. I know this first-hand from discovering that the history of these people was erased. It is amazing that there are any left to ask for recognition, given that there was systematic genocide committed by roving bands of "bounty hunters". I was completely shocked to read about this part of the history of our country, but after I did, I understood for the first time why my grandmother was so intent on suppressing our Indian ancestry. She was scared.
Yet, she became a great citizen, who applied the great Cherokee values of community service to improve her own community. She gave land away for a college, started a phone system in her community, and raised so much support for politicians that she was given a face-to-face meeting with the president. Yet, this woman's mother was deprived of her inheritance because she was Cherokee and could not inherit land. Yet, in spite of this double standard, after they moved and acquired land elsewhere, they turned around and donated land for a college that doesn't even teach the true history of this country. We need to rectify this wrong by recogniing these people wherever they are.
from Greta Fields, a part-Cherokee resident of Southeastern Kentucky, descendant of the Musselwhites of N. Carolina [and oh yet, the Adamses in the White House].
