I have a real problem with the History Channel. They are coming out with this series which glorifies logging. It's called Ax Men. I have seen only the previews, but this link will take you to the History Channel's home page, where you can readily see the ad for the show front and center.
The first-ever non-fiction series about the treacherous life of Pacific Northwest timber cutters, AX MEN, premieres Sunday, March 9 at 10pm ET/PT on History. From History and Original Productions, the same team responsible for the mega hit, Ice Road Truckers, this series looks at the legacy that the pioneers of our country laid for the present and future generations of loggers.
Deep in the woods of the Pacific Northwest, rugged men make their living doing one of the most dangerous jobs in history... Logging. Their mission: to retrieve timber perched on mountainsides too steep to access with machines. But this is no easy task.
For more than a hundred years, larger than life characters, many of whom are members of logging families that go back to the time when the West was being settled, have spent their days among towering trees and powerful machines and their nights in outposts far from the comforts of civilization. AX MEN will tell remarkable stories detailing the history of the logging industry, showing how technology has transformed life for today's logger, while the struggle of man versus nature stays the same.
Over the course of thirteen episodes, AX MEN follows four logging crews through a season in the remote forests of northwest Oregon. Plagued by mechanical failures, relentless weather--including a hurricane that ripped through the area--and violent and unpredictable terrain, these brave men risk their lives retrieving the very timber we depend on to build our country. Snapped cables, runaway logs and treacherous machinery are among the many dangers that threaten their lives and safety everyday. Anything and everything can go wrong on these sites and the price of even the simplest mistake can mean death.
This is obviously a careless disregard for our planet perpetrated by yet another series from the controversial History Channel. In one of the previews I saw on TV it shows a "logger" talking, and behind him is a HUGE patch of mountain that has been cleared of trees. What are these people at the History Channel thinking when they consider a program such as this acceptable???
I for one am highly upset about this series and intend to write the History Channel and give them a piece of my mind!
If anyone else would like to contact them, here is the link they give to contact them:
Though this is not a "sample letter" by any means, this is what I wrote to them:
Hello,
I detest the fact that you are glorifying the cutting down of trees by coming out with the show Ax Men. In this time of global warming we should be doing all we can to discourage actions such as mass clearing of trees. Why can't you do a show about saving the rain forests around the world and how dangerous that is, or something of that nature? When you glorify the mass clearing of trees it only serves to make people feel comfortable with exploiting the planet instead of reminding them that we as humans are being neglectful of our planet. Please re-think these decisions in the future and avoid airing programs that make people not only feel at ease with degrading our planet Earth, but actually develop a "desire" to degrade it.
Thank you,
Mrs. Billye Thompson

I get sick of hearing people talking about how logging is robbing the earth. Do you live in a brick or plastic house? What about the furniture, bed frames, dinner table, chairs, night stands etc. I could go on and on. What about farm land? Are some of you that nieve to think that that land was bare from the beginning of time. The towns that are growing bigger and bigger, trees have to be logged to make room for more homes, hospitals, schools and so on. Wake up, logging will always be needed. Trees are not just used for building materials, paper, railroad ties for train tracks, and toilet paper. Even recycled products need wood chips to help new and old fibers bond. My grandpa and dad were both loggers, so naturely so am I. But after 4 years of setting chockers under a helicopter I got my CDL and drive log truck for the past 5 1/2 years. The last thing I have to say about you enviromentalist is before you start complaining about loggers take a look around your house and think about what some of the items are made out of, I'll bet most of your house has wood products in it. Now think what your house would have in it if all wood products were taken out! WAKE UP PEOPLE! Trees are a renewable resource, and when land is logged off it is replanted. This is a law!

Well, no friends and no photo. So what do you have to hide Jason? Naive, you think a group of planted trees on a farm is the same thing as Old Growth Forest, who is naive. Naive, there are other means of production that can be used to replace most uses of wood. Bamboo and Inudstrial Hemp just for starters. Some people, industrial capitalist will not rest until this planet is unfit for any habitation.

Trees may be a renewable resource, but we are cutting them down a lot faster that we can renew them. Also, it's bad when programs such as Ax Men glorifies the mass clearing of forests and trees. I understand that your family makes a living through cutting trees and supplying consumers with lumber. I also understand that lumber is an important resource for us. But I think we need to play down this business as opposed to glamorizing it. There indeed are businesses that are needed, such as oil, lumber, and nuclear power. But we know now that these things can hurt us more than help us if we aren't careful, and glamorizing these industries by making a sensationalized program about them is irresponsible at the very least. We need to make stronger efforts to SLOW the rates of logging and deforestation, not fuel the flames of desire for folks to become involved in those industries at an increased rate!!

Sir,
No I am not a logger. I am I guess what you call a newbie to enviromental causes. You are right. I do have wood products in my house and I would not get rid of then. I also read a papery every day. I personally have no problem using wood products but I do have a problem where entire acres of trees are cut down leaving only stumps. I have a problem when large paper companies only concern is the profit and loss statements they send every year to their stockholders with complete disregard to how and where they cut down their resources. Yes trees are a renewablr resource but only when they are managed properly. Clear cutting acres of untouched forest then planting some seedlings afterward and hoping they will grow is not properly managing the wonderful resource known as wood. Properly using trees and ensuring they will be there for future use can be done if the economic and political will is there.
