These are the lyrics to an Icelandic song by Bubbi Morthens one of the most popular musicians here in Iceland. I think he has a beautiful and powerful voice.
A really nice person on You Tube surprised me and translated the lyrics for me.
The video is on my page in the comments section if you want to hear Bubbi sing this song.
He is my favorite Icelandic singer even though I don't understand the lyrics of everything he sings.

"Aldrei fór ég suður" (I never went south)

I usually wake up tired,
Almost not like myself.
But I know there is another life,
Than the one I live here.
My desire is awake,
While the fog clouds my eyes,
I yearn for something else,
Than guano, paycheck and vine.
On the fish, the Village lived, the Cod means everything for the people.
They slave the whole week trough, walking through fish slime and salt.
By the Conveyor belt the people stand but can't find rest.
Most of the young ones has gone south where the dreams are plentyfull.
...And the chorus starts like that:

Long dark winters, the wind blew through everything
Maybe everyone else was warm, but I felt cold.
Everyone waitet for the summer but the wait was long and hard,
The boats layed emty by the Pier, "í kinnungunum söng" (Basically means that as the side of the boats rubbed against the Pier, they sang.)
My Father had dreams that died for little money.
I dreamt of becoming a man, but I only could reach him up to his knees.
I'll never get those eyes, gaping endless emptiness.
Old man before his time, with broken coarse voice.

When I'd just turned seventeen, by the summer I heard some news,
That "Bensa í Gröf" doll (Bensi's daughter) was pregnant.
The nights grew long, and my fear aswell,
Pinned down, I couldn't take back what has happened
I never went south, I never had the courage.
Each and every summer it was postponed, then came fall, winter and spring.
Now I'm at the docks and doesn't think.
I pickle my barrels (salting fish barrels before closing them), for that I'll get payed.
