Location:Florida, United States
Please, show us you care fellow Floridians. I may not see much of you here, but your help is desperately needed right now. If you can take action, please let me know as soon as possible, or send a quick e-mail to Elizabeth Fleming of Defenders at efleming@defenders.org to request cards. We need to get behind FLORIDA FOREVER now because if we don't, we can kiss our wildlife goodbye!
Ceci,
Defenders is a steering committee member of the Florida Forever Coalition and the campaign - getting funding for Florida Forever and ensuring a successor program - is among our highest priorities. Pat Kiesylis is helping to organize grassroots activities from our office. She is sending out cards about the campaign for people to sign and send back to us; we'll then forward them to the appropriate legislators.
Do you have people in your group, who are in Florida, who would sign cards and get friends of theirs to sign also. We're trying to collect lots of these to demonstrate popular support for the program.
Many thanks,
Elizabeth

  Elizabeth Fleming
Florida Representative

Subject: Florida Forever Funding in serious jeopardy
Importance: High

Funding for Florida Forever is in serious jeopardy.  Florida Forever funds the major conservation land acquisition programs in Florida.  The Florida House budget recommends NO funds for Florida Forever for next year.

We urge you to read the information below from the Florida Forever Coalition and act TODAY to ensure that Florida Forever continues to receive funds.  A strong show of support from grass root voices, not lobbyists, is necessary NOW.  Please contact your legislator and the key legislators listed below to urge them to continue full funding for Florida Forever and the Florida Everglades.  Ask three other people to express their support today as well.

Visit www.SupportFloridaForever.org on a regular basis to track Florida Forever’s status and learn what you can do to ensure continuation of this program essential to Florida’s future.

Thank you.

Jim Muller

Action Alert - House Proposes No Money for Florida Forever

A major, new threat to Florida Forever and Everglades restoration looms in the emerging state budget, which is being drafted for the year beginning July 1.

The budget being considered in the Florida House eliminates all funding for Florida Forever and the Everglades.  The spending plan would set back state land conservation and Everglades restoration plans by $500 million in borrowing next year - breaking a two-decade commitment to land conservation and the Everglades - in order to save $16 million in General Revenue.

The Senate is considering funding Florida Forever at $300 million, but is cutting Everglades spending in half - to only $100 million.

Act Now:  The House Budget is the Priority
The most important message to communicate in support of Florida Forever RIGHT NOW is to be directed to Members of the House: Fund Florida Forever and Everglades restoration.

·    Return Florida Forever and Everglades restoration to the FY 2008-2009 state budget.
·    Continue the two-year commitment to investment in Florida Forever and the Everglades.
·    Rarely has there been a better, more cost-effective, strategic time to buy conservation land.

Contact House Speaker Marco Rubio, House Budget Chairman Ray Sansom, and your local State Representative, and tell them how you feel! Click here for contact information and tips on communicating with legislators.

Florida Forever "Successor" Moving Forward
Against the worrisome budgetary context, both Senate and House committees are moving on bills to extend Florida Forever at $300 million for 10 years beginning in 2010. While this is not the spending level necessary to meet the state's $17 billion acquisition backlog, the progress toward a successor program is encouraging. The significant issues that remain to be addressed include proposed uses that are inconsistent with conservation and a provision to turn lands intended for wildlife habitat into dumping grounds for gopher tortoises evicted from proposed developments. Much work remains!
