UNM Student Government Passes Lobo Resolution! Through the great work and dedication of the UNM Wilderness Alliance, the Student Body Government of the University of New Mexico passed a resolution supporting the protection of the Mexican Gray Wolf!
Joint Resolution 2S WHEREAS, The Associated Students of the University of New Mexico represent undergraduate student body; and WHEREAS, the Mexican gray wolf, also known as the Lobo, has been the University of New Mexico's mascot since 1920; and WHEREAS, the Mexican gray wolf, a keystone species found only in the unique habitats of the southwestern United States and Mexico, remains a perfect representation of the University of New Mexico's twin objectives: to encompass the heritage of New Mexico and to provide leadership for the future; and WHEREAS, Lobos have recently been returned to the wilderness of New Mexico after about sixty years of total extinction within the United States; THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that, the Associated Students of the University of New Mexico celebrate the 10th anniversary of the first releases of wolves in the Blue Range Wolf Recovery Area in southwestern New Mexico and southeastern Arizona; and THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that, the Associated Students of the University of New Mexico resolutely support the continued existence and prosperity of the Mexican gray wolf in the wilderness of the southwestern United States as a means of ensuring that the inspirational qualities of wild wolves may continue to inspire current and future generations of UNM students, faculty, staff, and alumni; THEREFORE BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that, copies of this resolution be sent to the University of New Mexico's Board of Regents, President David Schmidly, and Curator Joseph Cook at the Museum of Southwestern Biology. |

I am an Avid Wolf Advocate.when I say Avid,I mean Avid!My personal concern for Lobo is that not every one shares our concerns about this survival issue.A couple of years ago something happened an a mother and puppies were taken in to protection. During the night the puppies and maybe the mother died. They were in custody. I am not sure I have all of this story exactly right except these wolves are having thing happen to them when they are supposed to be under protection. I strongly urge you to get seriously involved! These wolves can't be turned loose in an area where all of their "smells" and "landmarks" have dissappeared They are having a hard time. I also have a concern about the local ranchers in the area killing them. When the wolves in Idaho were taken off the protected 13 of them were dead in less than 2 weeks. I am urging the authors of this resolution to take it up your heart to seriously oversee this project. PLEASE. Myself and others would do any thing to help you we can. |
