Blog: Technology comes from the earth, too

Not too long ago I was walking to my car from work and passed two little boys and a man who, I assume, was their grandfather.  The two boys saw a squirrel and proceeded to chase and yell after it.  The squirrel, understandably, ran up a tree and hid on a high branch.  The boys proceeded to throw sticks up into the tree at it.  One then got a thick, long branch that had probably fallen down during a storm.  The boy reached the branch high into the tree very near the squirrel and started hitting the side of the tree repetitively and noisily, trying to hit the squirrel to bring it down.  When the squirrel moved further up the tree and they realized they had failed, they cried, "Nature's stupid anyway," and ran off.  Throughout this whole incident.  the grandfather stared and smiled, saying nothing.

Now, although they're just kids and were probably just trying to have some fun, it really made me start to think about how people, especially children today, are hesitant to realize that EVERYTHING surrounding us came from the earth.  Everything we see in the world, in one way or another, came from some aspect of nature and was molded by human hands.  Even our computers, at one point, came from the earth.
It really worries me that newer generations are growing so distant from nature that they don't even realize how vital it really is.  Perhaps parents or schools should teach their children more about the necessity of nature in our lives and how doing simple things like treating wildlife kindly can actually make a difference.
I often worry that we have become so consumed with technology that many people don't even know how they would survive (literally) without it.
