Our weekend upgrade to a new green data center is complete. The site is now running on extremely energy efficient and high speed servers. It’s a great move toward sustainability, and also means faster site performance.
Please note that there are still some quirks in the new system we're working out. If you're seeing some posts disappearing or slow to appear, please bear with us. The team is still working hard to resolve these remaining issues as fast as possible. The Green Impact of our data center upgrade:Care2 will save 341,000 kilowatt-hours and will have abated 266 metric tons of CO2 due to these upgrades. That’s comparable to the following*: - Eliminating annual greenhouse gas emissions from 48.6 passenger vehicles or - Eliminating CO2 emissions from 30,149 gallons of gasoline consumed or - Eliminating CO2 emissions from the electricity use of 35.2 homes for one year or - Avoiding greenhouse gas emissions by recycling 91.6 tons of waste instead of sending it to the landfill * The CO2 impact was derived using the EPA website Big kudos to our IT team that spent the entire weekend at the new data center (which is cold, noisy and not exactly a comfortable place to cat nap). This was a heroic effort to move equipment and then set up the new configuration. After the hardware was working, our Engineering and QA teams then needed to make sure all of the services actually worked on the new platform. This is all mindbogglingly complex work and there are so many pieces to the puzzle there were the inevitable surprises and setbacks. Throughout it all, the team kept a good sense of humor and worked tirelessly to get everything back on line before the Monday morning crush.
