Demand for review of sentence, cat killing case in Siu Sai Wan

Early March this year, ten youngsters were found brutalizing and killing a stray cat in Siu Sai Wan. Two of them were charged and convicted of cruelty to animals. They were sentenced to 4 and 3 months in jail on 14 May this year.

The funniest thing is that in several other cases of selling pornographic CDs that went through the same court the same day, the convicted got six to eight months in jail.

We can only conclude, from the comparison above, that brutalizing a living and sentient being is far cheaper than selling pornography CDs. In buying and selling of obscene CDs, both sellers and buyers are fully aware of the crime; however, that innocent cat “black sister” was only too unfortunate to be on that street at that moment and bumped into the gangsters who could not have cared less about the life of others.

A maximum penalty of $200,000 fine and 3 years in prison has come into effect in the revision to “Cruelty to animals” offence in early 2006.  However, we have not seen any trends of decrease in cruelty cases. Rather, it is on the rise. One of the reasons is the lack of deterrence due to the often lenient penalty imposed by the courts. Even in a recent case where a man killed a barking deer, the highest-ever 6-month jail term was only one sixth of the maximum. It is a shame of humankind to see our people perform such brutal acts on defenseless animals. Is an innocent soul like that stray cat worth just 3 months’ imprisonment in the eyes of the Judge?

We are not launching a revenge, for the life of the cat will never come back no matter how harsh a penalty is imposed.  We demand justice.

Life is priceless. Animals are innocent. We strongly demand that justice be served and a review of the sentence be filed for the cat killing case in Siu Sai Wan.
