Bite and Run 

Someday I’m going to break out of this chain
Run free
Through the country
Stop to lie in the sun
Roll on the grass
Lick the wounds of my past. 

For now I sit in the dirt
Beaten
Broken
Wanting to bite him in the face
Every time he kicks me
Or leaves me out in the rain
Or even just looks at me
With his ugly grimace 
But I know if I bite him
And fail to kill I’d be doomed for sure.
He’d be certain to get out the rifle
And then bury me in the back
Cursing as he shoveled and bled
In the dirt I now inhabit. 

Knowing he occasionally brings me in
I’ll just keep waiting
For that single moment
The collar slips Just enough from his grasp.
