Blog: Is GM listening? You bet.

A few weeks ago, some of you received a Care2 action alert requesting that you let General Motors know we want hybrids that will make a difference in the world and in our wallets.

We were contacted immediately by GM because of two things:

1. the number of petition signatures flooding their office from Care2's petitionsite; and,

2. to correct our oversight that they do in fact have two hybrid cars, not just SUVs, on the market [Although they have not sold very many].Saturn Aura Hybrid

So, we applaud General Motors for listening to consumers, and we applaud Care2 members for coming together to take action to the degree that it made GM take notice and respond.  Even though they contacted us to correct an oversight, clearly they recognized the volume of consumer actions required their attention.

If you ever wonder whether these giant corporations pay attention to your petitions, have no fear, you're getting their attention.

And if you missed yesterday's news reports, GM announced they are delaying plans to upgrade their existing fleet of profitable but large pickups and SUVs to instead focus on smaller fuel efficient models.  There were obviously many factors involved in that decision, but it's strong evidence they're now seeing the light.

Change often doesn't happen as fast as we'd like, but when we stand up, join together, and make our voices heard, it makes a difference.

That's such great news! GM is really falling behind, and I hope they do what they can to catch up to the growing demand for hybrids. And there's definitely something to be said for thousands of people signing a petition to tell them so. :)

Looks like the hybrid cars are in their fleet are:

2008 Chevy Malibu Hybrid
2008 Saturn AURA Green Line Hybrid

According to gm.com, they are both mid-size sedans getting 24 city/32 highway MPG. The Toyota Prius also claims to be mid-size and get 45/48, and is in the same price range. Well I guess that's why GM hasn't sold a lot of them. But you gotta start somewhere!

It's great to hear that the voices of our members are definitely making a difference. Encouraging news! Now if we could only convince them to invent a 300mpg car ... or perhaps I'll just buy one of these: http://www.aptera.com/

I always wondered how/if signing these petitions worked. Thank you Randy, for this report. I will continue to sign these petitions. I may not drive, since I take public transportation, but it's nice to know that GM is listening to those who care.

I drive a 1997 Geo Metro which gets 35-37 MPGs which is a bit on the low end side compared to some other GEOs. GM bought out GEO and put the Chevrolet name on the same vehicles for several years before dropping the line. The technology was present back in the mid 90s to get 35-50 MPG vehicles so where are they now? Most new vehicles get far less than what we are currently getting in our 11 year old car and the state offered us a $3,500 buyout to take our vehicle off the road!

Hi Randy,

I was wondering how you reconcile this apparent contradiction:

"So, we applaud General Motors for listening to consumers,"

"to correct our oversight that they do in fact have two hybrid cars, not just SUVs, on the market [Although they have not sold very many]"

You seem to give the impression that consumers were demanding hybrids, when at the same time it is clear that consumers haven't been buying them. In the end, any successful company is going to produce what the market will actually buy, not what petitions call for.

Of all the American auto makers, GM seems to be the one that's really making honest effort into getting into the green arena. With the Volt coming out around 2010, it will be a big next step in the right direction for green automobiles. Unfortunately, US auto makers are still 3-5 years behind their Japanese and Asian counterparts in general, but now is the time. GM has begun to flood their money into the next generation of automobiles, and the other American auto makers desperately need to follow suit if they plan on surviving the new playing field of the automotive industry. Personally? I expect a big shakeup with American auto makers in the next 5 years.

GMC also has put out the Chevy Tahoe Hybrid. Although it still only gets UP TO 21mpg in the city it is much better than its counterpart coming in at only 14mpg. Still it would be nice if we could all be driving hydrogen cars. Too bad they don't exist....OH WAIT ya, they do:
The Honda FCX Clarity...now all we need is to set up some hydrogen fill stations and get more auto companies to produce them. However, with the trillions of dollars to be made in the business of oil, I am sure those who are making the profits off of it are really pushing for more gas. What do you think?

It's great to know that progressive voices can reach the ears of giant corporations. Let's hope that more of them start paying attention.

Customers won't buy a product if they don't know it exists. GM needs to shift it's marketing campaigns if it truly wants a piece of this market share. They were forced into the electric car market in the 90's by government regulations and killed their own car in support of the oil industry. Now they're being forced into hybrid car market by consumer demand yet they still are not letting their consumers know about their hybrid options. Are they once again cannibalizing their own product? I hope not.

Great job on the petition. This could be a win/win for GM and American consumers. Adding a really fuel-efficient hybrid to its line-up could help GM expand its market share and profits, and consumers would benefit from having more choice in makers of hybrid cars.

They are YEARS behind what they should be. US car manufacturers knew starting back in the 70's that they should make smaller cars, but they ignored it and that's when Honda and the others got such a foothold in our market.

If they start making more efficient vehicles, hopefully they will understand they need to have them designed well and made with quality.

GM's financial problems are not only due to them not planning ahead, it's poor quality. My family was always GM for ever and finally we gave up and will never go back due to poor design and poor quality. But if they want to survive, they need to look to the future and make good products with the focus on function, not only form.

Kudos to Randy and Care2 for well meaning efforts. Shame on GM for pushing the SUV culture, and continuing to do so with proposed Hybrid SUV's.

Regardless the power source, the smaller the vehicle, the better the economy. GM needs to be producing smaller, fuel efficient vehicles of all kinds, and now.

Clean Diesel beat out Hybrids for the World Green Car Award. They get 25% -30% better fuel economy than comparable hybrids. And GM has been producing and selling clean, fuel efficient cars for years, in Europe and the rest of the world. GM could bring those vehicles to the US market almost immediately. So let's push them to do so.

Good work Randy and Care2. Now let's push for those clean diesels ASAP. Thanks and God Bless.

I'm just glad they are aware of what the "general population" is thinking. Leslie...it can only make it easier if there are more options. Yes they will produce what they sell most of, but if we care here..why not bring it out into the "REAL WORLD" when we log off, & practice what we preach? We as Americans haven't been buying them because we r too busy trying to hold on to our homes. There haven't been enough choices, and supply & demand has been an issue. The more hybrids they pump out, the le$$ they will cost! I say KUDOS!!

GM bet it's future on high profit SUV's and helped cause the SUV Culture of excessive consumption. GM is moving to Hybrid SUV's in an attempt to salvage the billions of dollars in tooling and investment in the SUV's. However, A Yukon Hybrid gets, at best, 20 mpg highway, and about 14 mpg around town. 16 mpg combined is hardly fuel efficient and certainly not environmentally friendly. And that's the 2WD model. The 4WD models get about 15% worse mileage.

Ford and Toyota have Hybrid SUV's. They are not selling. Their perfomance is sub-par compared to gas engine SUV's.

By comparison, a Prius gets 42 mpg highway and 40 mpg around town. GM needs to be producing small, fuel efficient cars, such as those they already sell in Europe.

The answer is Clean Diesel Cars such as those used in Europe for over 15 years. GM sells Clean Diesel Cars right now in Europe. A Clean Diesel VW Jetta gets 52 mpg and the Clean Diesel BMW Mini Cooper gets 62.5 mpg, right now, in Europe.

We need to push GM to bring these fuel efficient cars to the US market.
