On a recent weekend I had a solo road trip planned up to beautiful Lake Tahoe. The day before I was scheduled to depart I received a Spare the Air Day notice about the next day. Spare the Air days are when air quality is bad and they ask you to avoid driving altogether by taking public transit or walking/biking to work. I try to bike or take the train on these days so I was pretty bummed when I learned I'd be adding to the problem. I looked up public transit alternatives and there weren't too many options. Then I decided to check Craigslist to see if anyone needed a ride. I posted an ad and received 3 responses. Out of the 3, one person named Woody, was a match for the time I was leaving and where I was headed. I was a pretty nervous about picking up some random stranger so I called him to get a sense of the reason for his trip and whether he sounded like someone I could handle a long car drive with. He sounded pretty chill on the phone so we arranged a time and place to meet.

I picked up Woody across the bay and we headed out towards Placerville. In the first 20 minutes of the car ride we realized we had all kinds of things in common. Woody was super kind, very respectful and he even read to me all the way to a town called Camino just east of Placerville. It was there that Woody was picking up a bus he had purchased on behalf of the non-profit he volunteers for called, Pastors for Peace. The book he read to me was really good, The Mastery of Love. I highly recommend it. It totally passed the time and took away any stress from the drive.

Just before I dropped Woody off he thanked me for using Craigslist. When I explained it was a Spare the Air Day and that I felt I should do my part by offering a ride he was even more stoked. His girlfriend would have had to drive him all the way up there and back just to drop him off if he hadn't found a ride. So not only did I get extra gas money for the drive and the bridge toll paid for but I also had an awesome companion for the journey.

I would totally consider using the ride share feature on Craigslist again.

Here's a short clip of Woody changing a flat on one of their buses on a past caravan to cuba (he's the one in the blue hat): http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x9tes_changingblowout2
