It took threats from a lawyer to get Atria to clean up mold.By the time it was addressed, the resident(suffering from Altziemer's) had to be moved and the room completely torn apart from ceiling down as the mold had grown to 4 feet from floor.
Atria Senior Living is a national corporation that provides housing for senior citizens. And they do.But from there on, things get scary. Atria is consistently making news for community wide illness ,often from poorly prepared food, "losing residents to wandering", and general neglect, throughout the nation. Most recently, they have evicted over 100 seniors (several with dementia)from an Ossining location to further fatten thier bottom line.At a suddenly announced "mandatory meeting of residents" management announced to all that they are tearing down their home,in the interest of "refurbishing for the future." Family members were notified by mail and given no time to come to the aid of their elders. Many seniors are scrambeling, unassisted, to find a place to live, having 90 days and little assistance. Naturally, Atria is happily shuffelling many into other Atria "communities."
Please pray for them.
And please, if you know anyone considering Atria for their parent or grand parent, aunt uncle, friend, have them check into its history. It is all together possible that the goings on in NY are not a national issue, but they all answer to the same bottom line.
Personally, I have witnessed poor quality of food, a lack of offered ameneties(pool never open, programs cancelled, dirty common rooms)mis handled medicines, days in a row without hot water, leaking roofs, flooding rooms, mold growth on interior surfaces(was told no one working for Atria is aloud to handle bleach...for safety reasons!)....
As I provide assistance to some of the elderly in this community, I was once even put under quarintine, along with the rest of the population, for exposure to an unknown air-borne contaminent. While Atria did perform studies, we were never told what we were exposed to, despite several inquiries.....
it goes on.
Keep your loved ones away from Atria Senior Living!

Dawn I will pray that the real truth of what is happening in Atria Senior Living will be brought to the notice of those who can make a difference to the lives of these families who only want the best for their loved ones.

Thank you for your prayers, Sue. Atria is a big corporation and are clever to stay with-in legal boundries, so far as anyone that has looked can tell. They are morally reprehensable, though and I regret often that I cannot protect more of Atria's community members from the various daily neglects doled to them.
It is remarkable, I have to add, the incredible recilliance of our elders! For the most part, there is an attitude of grudging acceptance of things they cannot accept and a true desire to maximize enjoyment.Really seizing not just the day but each and every moment an opportunity for joy. They got us here. Respect for them is commanded .
