Walking the path of justice

I'm freaking tired of people in my circles just "talking" about the issues. Whenever I ask them "so what are you doing about it or prepared to do about it?" I feel like Dr. Phil.

More often than not, they laugh at the level of online activism I'm engaged in and often comment that my time and energy would be better used in growing my business.

What they don't appreciate, is that the path of justice, has become my business of choice. The difference, these days, is that my business of choice doesn't result in the usual outcomes of a monetary reward, but that the work is rewarding, enriching and worthwhile nevertheless!

They don't get it. I hear repeatedly that I am wasting my talent, skills, time and energy on engaging in battles that will never be won.

When did people become so apathetic?

Many years ago, in my first year of university in the late 70s, I was lined up at the Toronto Bus Terminal to purchase a bus ticket to go home for Christmas break.

There was a black woman standing in line, directly in front of me. When it was her turn at the counter, the asshole ticket agent behind the counter, refused to serve her, look at her, or speak to her.

He put a CLOSED sign at the counter and moved over to the next available counter to start a new line. Everyone just dashed to the new line.

Again, when the black woman was at the head of the line, the bus station ticket agent (the asshole) closed the wicket and moved over to another. Again everyone dashed over to the new line, with the exception of the black woman and myself. We just stood there, I amazed, she crying.

I won’t bore you with the details of what transpired that day other than to share that I never made it to my home town on the bus that day and that I came to an inch of being arrested for the scene I made at the bus station, refusing to walk away from the blatant discrimination I had witnessed.

That day, I grew up and realized that prejudice / bigotry was part of our world and that standing up for your convictions, may sometimes result in unfavourable outcomes.

But at the end of the day, if given a choice between two or more paths, regardless of the bumpy ride, I know that I am in the driver's seat, and the path I choose will be a reflection of who I am and what I stand for.

And in the absence of a path, lead and leave a trail -- you don't have to be brilliant or articulate or even a leader to do so. You just have to care enough to stand behind your convictions!

That's what I call walking the path of justice.

Apathy can be like a disease as it is the comfortable way to be. To the folks who say you are wasting your time, yet are willing to benefit from your efforts I say they do not know what they are talking about.Humankind is all our business.
We all have a defining moment when we choose what path we take. In regards to activism I say I have no other choice as I see the consequences if I do not speak out.

"Apathy isn't the same thing as withdrawing in disgust". I too get tired of people talking, not taking action. Worse are the ones that don't realize it's importance. God (as you know s/he) Bless You!
