The NY Times has an interesting profile of "Ecotopia," a new photography and video exhibition of socially-aware, attention-getting art at New York's International Center of Photography. The center’s second “triennial of photography and video” follows 2003's "Strangers," which explored the confusion of the post-9/11 world as it struggled with religious fundamentalism; "Ecotopia" offers a stark reminder to the world at large that geopolitical concerns and terrorism are not the only, nor necessarily the most urgent, problems confronting us today. According to the article, "'Ecotopia' might be described as 'An Inconvenient Truth' in exhibition form. It is a tale of beauty and devastation told by nearly 40 photojournalists and artists. Their viewpoints vary, as do their subjects and forms, but you rarely escape a sense of nature’s vast, incalculable richness or of photography’s ability to do it justice. There may be no greater meeting of subject and medium." The exhibition runs through Jan. 7 at the International Center of Photography; if you can't make it to New York, you can take a virtual walk through the exhibition; for the visual learners among us, it's a stunning juxtaposition of inherent beauty, human-caused devastation, and what nature is capable of when the delicate balance is upset. ::NY Times
