Sign the pledge: I pledge not to buy Canadian seafood products such as snow crab, cod, scallops, and shrimp until Canada ends its commercial seal hunt for good.
Over the past four years, Canada's beautiful harp seal nursery has been transformed into a scene of bloody carnage. The Canadian government has allowed more than one million seals—almost all of them babies as young as 12 days old—to be killed for their fur. The kill quota for 2008 was 275,000—5,000 more than the previous year.
But there is new hope for the seals. The European Commission put forward a proposal to ban the import and trade in seal products in the European Union—a move many believe is a historic step towards ending cruel commercial seal hunts around the world.
However, the Commission has included a problematic exemption in the proposal—for products from countries that can prove their hunting methods are "humane" and that the seals did not suffer unnecessarily. Such an exemption might allow countries to improve their regulations on paper while the cruelty continues in the field unchecked.
The good news is that there is still time to act. The proposal will now be forwarded to the European Parliament, where it is possible this exemption may be removed. European citizens and their parliamentarians want a strong law—one that stops all trade in products derived from commercial seal hunts, which are inherently inhumane.
Please take action today to let the European Parliament know you support a total ban on seal product trade! Help us save the seals by signing the petition on this page. Then, after you've signed, please ask your friends to sign it, too.

Signed petition, it's my understanding that Canada is attempting to get pretty nasty and threatening to the EU regarding this total ban. I think it is imperative that the USA passes the recently introduced change to laws transporting for horses to slaughter as these horses were going to Canada, which makes the US complicit in animal suffering. By passing this change to existing law we will show Canada they we are working on ending animal suffering and not just transferring it to another country so we keep our hands clean.

Dear sister Morgan, I am with you there!
Only rightious man will fight against any form of cruelty, involving humans and animals. I am sick and tired, that animals have to prove that they are sentient beings...that they can feel pain....that they can suffer.
