Beltane is the Celtic observance which divides the winter from the summer. It celebrates the union of the god and goddess. On this day, the veils between this world and hte next are at their thinnest. Fearies, spirits and other magickal beings are free to walk the land today, for good or ill. The Traditions of Beltane unusually involve an elaborate celebration of this day, to welcome the summer and to put aside the darkness and privations of winter. A loud vibrant gathering on Beltane is said to encourage the growth of crops and the coming of better weather. The night of Beltane is properly marked by a bonfire. Bel is the Celtic sun god - the word 'Beltane' means Bel's Fire. But long story short it is one of the 8 major sabbats of the witches calendar.
