Dear Friends,

1995 was a very important year in my life. In fact I met my sweet Nancy already in 1994. It was love at first sight. We were together in action in politic movement. We were fighting for justice, for the poor, for legalisation of cannabis, for everything we knew that went wrong in Belgium. I left the Green Party in 1994 and joined a new movement. It had nothing to do with ideas, but the leading lady in Antwerp of the Green Party was very greedy, in fact a crook and a alcoholic. She was very two-faced. Going to meetings she left her Volvo behind the corner and arrived on her bike. Most of Belgian politicians are alcoholics. Here they vote not the one who promises most, but who boozes most.

1995 I played my dream-play, together with sweet Nancy. Her character was my daughter in that play. I wrote it and played the main character. But the same year I played for the same company “The Fool of Rekem”.

In a second-hand bookshop I found a very small book, in fact too long to make a monologue from it. It was the first and maybe only monologue in three acts. It lasted 45 minutes. The book was written by a history-professor from the university of Gent. It is the story of Louis Naelaerts and that is what I want to tell you. According to my turbulent life, I had to flight too many times. So several times I lost almost everything. I lost even that book and have to mention now what is still in my memory. My own text is also missing.

Louis was born in 1912. He was still a minor when he was arrested for stealing small things and homelessness, what at that time was still a crime in Belgium.  His father asked the judge to incarcerate him in a severe re-education centre. That was Rekem, a small place at the Dutch border in Limburg. He never had a decent trial.

In the beginning of the war (1940) Louis escaped from the forensic psychiatry in Rekem. The Gestapo picked him up in the Netherlands and brought him to a concentration camp. He survived the whole war there. He helped several important prisoners. Among them the mayor of Wilrijk, near Aartselaar where Louis came from. After the war these important people pleaded for Louis without any result, because of the separation of the forces in Belgium. That means the so-called justice cannot be controlled by government or parliament.

All the others who survived the concentration camps got a remuneration from the Belgian government. Louis war arrested again, brought back to Rekem, punished for being escaped. He wrote a small book to obtain a review of the arrest, without any result. The organisations for politic prisoners who survived concentration camps did utmost their best, without any result. The mayor of Wilrijk...

In Rekem Louis was placed under severe control, isolated, etc.

Several years later he could escape again. He went to France and lived a normal life in Lourdes a well-known pilgrim-resort.

I asked the professor in 1995 if I could visit him in Lourdes, but the professor told me the situation of Louis’ heart did not stand too strong emotions anymore. I don’t know when he died. But it is important to keep his memory alive. These things still happen in Belgium. And nobody knows.

Here is than the whole story as was asked by Mary Neal
9 hours ago |
Mary Neal asked me to tell my story. How I was arrested in 1980 for the abusive failure of my boss. How I spent 6 months in prison. How I suddenly was delivered from prosecution, released, put at the door or what you call it without any form of income. I even did not know the shelters for the homeless existed. I was a chief accountant before and like everybody did not expect that ever would happen to me. After living in the street for two weeks. (There was a woman with six children, constantly battered by her husband, an alcoholic, who gave me shelter. But I was already in the madhouse when he died from his alcohol-abuse.)

After two weeks I failed suicide. I was brought to the hospital and when my wounds were healed to closed psychiatry. There I spent four months, dressed in blue like in prison but sleeping in a room with 36 men. When I got free I went back to my mothers place. My insurance accepted in the meantime that I was 'ill'(?). So I got an income. I was still signalled by the police and had to visit a shrimp weekly. I could not go back to my own appartment because the police destroyed it after they arrested me. The time I spent in psychiatry I even could not pay the rent.

1981-1982: several short hospitalisations in psychiatry. They forced me to have a longer treatment in a bigger psychiatric clinic. I went to one and stayed there for almost two years in intensive psychotherapy. This is another term for brain-washing and what Orwell meant when he wrote '1984'. 1984 I was released from that clinic and brought to a post-psychiatric community from the same firm in Brussels. There I met Christianne. We married.

Christianne was in her second year studying medicine. She ought to become a doctor and a good one. In a moment of weakness, she jumped out of the window on the second floor in a youth's hotel. She spent several years in psychiatry, treated with electroshocks and other horrible things. Her brain was damaged. In november 1986 she rode her bicycle under a train. It was clearly suicide.

Once again I went back to my mother's place and gave up my job in a printers-office. Then I worked several years for animal protection until my rhumatism went to back and I became double-disabled, what did not mean that I received more compensation. The opposite was true, because I had always been paid a little bit by those bosses.

Two times I went back to that community. 1988-89 and 1997-1999.

In 1999 the community discovered my income was to small to keep me there. Anyway I started to hate Brussels. They brought me to a small shelter for homeless in Antwerp. I was back in town. There the other inhabitants, who were alcoholics, did not accept me and I was brought to psychiatry again.

The clinic in a small town near Antwerp has a bad reputation. I staid there for a year. Seven months in the most closed section that exists in Belgium. But the last five months I staid in something that was in theory more open but in fact worse. There I was really mistreated by the so-called nurses. Since then I call them half-nuns.

I escaped in 2000, but New Year 2001 I landed again in another clinic between Antwerp and Malines, near Lier too. In the middle of 2001 I went to a shelter for the homeless, a good one this time. Therefrom they helped me to install living on my own. But it was that part of the town leaded by dealers, pimps, drug-whores and other criminals. I got trouble with the police again, allthough they could not blame me anything. I had to go back to that last clinic. Therefrom back to the shelter. Now they installed me in the soutborder of Antwerp.

Then I remet my sweet Nancy. We married. We were expelled for over-habiting but found another appartment. I am lucky now with my wife and pets.
