We are so pleased that many people who care about the human rights are joining AIMI.  At first, AIMI was a solitary feminine voice of indefinite pitch, trembling with sadness and outrage at a cruel system that actually imprisons people for being sick.  Now, that solitary voice has grown louder and more effective, joined by a chorus of rich altos, baritones, beautiful sopranos, and tenors! 

We all join our voices and say as one, "Please stop imprisoning people for having a very common health problem!  Stop victimizing mental patients!

TODAY, AIMI’S VOICE IS GROWING STRONGER.  Members, please use the handy "INVITE FRIENDS" tab on the upper right window of our home page at Care2 and invite your friends who have an interest in human rights.  Just by joining this effort, they help by showing their concern for the rights of mentally ill persons.  Please hurry, because:

Someone is suffering in solitary confinement, locked alone in his bare cell up to 23 hours per day. He paces his cage while naked and afraid, and needing our help!

Someone sits on her cold metal rack in a jail cell, rocking her body as fast as she can while trying to remember why she is in jail.  She’s wondering where her family is right now, and she needs your help.  Please, jail guards, don't gas her for screaming!

A mental patient stands trembling before the judge in a courtroom, his hands and feet chained, about to be sentenced to life in prison for being sick.  Please read the letter in my Sharebook and contact the distraught mother of Jeremy Smith.  Her son did nothing more than hit another patient. 

But Jeremy has hit someone twice before, and theirs is a three-strikes state!

                   Maybe justice is too blind! 

Judges, please OPEN YOUR EYES AND RECOGNIZE when a mental patient stands before your bench!  He does not belong in jail, but in treatment.

Mental patients, please stop feeling ashamed of something you cannot help - it is only a common health condition that can be controlled with treatment, so please get the help you need!  Ignore the stigma attached to mental illness.  As more persons who are diffabled and their family members begin to speak out, the stigma will disappear, just as it did for victims of child abuse and domestic violence. 

AIMI members and other interested persons, please treat this matter with urgency – people are suffering and dying while they rely on us to advocate for them.  Please urge your friends to join in the chorus demanding,

           “Decriminalize mental illness!”

Bless you Mary, as the Brits say "Keep a stiff upper lip" and soldier on, You know what is important. The British Columbia Government shut down the hospital that took care of most of our Mentally challenged people. Now many of them wander the streets as homeless, unable to care for themselves, and there they are with the right to say no to medications. As long as they say no to assistance they are considered totally in control of their own life.

oh, I wonder how many here in America on the streets are mentally disabled! from documentaries and specials I have seen, quite a large number. too many people like to be blind and say the homeless are just drunks and junkies, so who should care, but I think not. I believe so many are impaired. you know, Mary, I have taken special steps to insure my own Brothers future in the event that my parents are no longer around to care for him. We have to take care of each other, it's the only way!
