Please note and get this on the front page, we need everyone to see what the BLM plans. They can't feed the 30,000 horses that they have, but they are rounding up more!!
BLM to Remove Pryor Wild Horses
September 18, 2008
Dear Friends of Cloud and His Herd,
The BLM has decided to proceed with bait trapping the Pryor Wild Horses. The BLM Record of Decision states that 38 horses could be removed. However the Wild Horse and Burro Specialist, who will be doing the horse handling, has told us that approximately 24 horses will be removed and that they will be 1-3 years old. Click here to read more about bait trapping.
Although we were unsuccessful in convincing BLM that this action is unnecessary, we do believe they were convinced by public input not to remove the older horses and to take around 24 horses rather than the 38 called for in the Environmental Assessment.
The fact that BLM began trapping this week is particularly upsetting as we have been invited to attend a meeting next week in which Jim Sparks, Billings BLM Field Manager; Steve Williams, Custer National Forest Supervisor; Montana Senate and Congressional Staffers; and several local wild horse advocates will gather to discuss the expansion of the wild horse territory. The expanded range would include a small portion of the areas historically used by the Pryor Herd. Expansion would allow for a larger legal home and would have eliminated the “need” to remove any animals from their home.
We will keep you up-to-date on the details of the capture and on what date an adoption will take place. As we understand it, this will be some type of competitive bid adoption, and it will be held at the Britton Springs corrals near Lovell, Wyoming. We assume this adoption would take place no earlier than mid-October.
Thank you for all your input on behalf of these precious animals. The public’s wishes continue to be ignored but we will keep working to change this situation and to secure a future of freedom for Cloud, his family and his herd.
