I got up today, while it was still dark, at 5:30 AM, secure in (and distressed by) the knowledge that it was Monday and I had to get ready for work.

At 8 AM I cleaned up, put on a dress, put on some foundation to attempt to disguise the trunks under my eyes, a little lipstick and a touch of eyeliner and headed out the door dreading seeing my psychotic bitchboss. (Note: I usually wear NO makeup to work but I was trying to cheer myself up. Let me tell you, at this point nothing but winning a $10 million lottery, freeing me from having to work for anyone but myself ever again, would cheer me up).

As I walked down the four flights to the apartment parking lot, I noticed most of the cars were still in place. But as this is a complex with a diverse population, I didn't dwell on it as people here have all kinds of jobs and work all kinds of shifts.

I got into my car and when I started it on came the radio, set to the morning talk show in Hartford that gives traffic and weather. Instead of the usual, there was a solemn voice intoning solemn thoughts about one's relationship to Jesus Christ. I thought this was a bit odd but shrugged it off as an ad for a church.

I drove to the first stop sign in the complex and the Jesus man was still droning on. It wasn't really until then that I got suspicious about what day it was, so I turned the corner, pulled over and took out my cell phone. After finally figuring out how to access the calendar, I saw SUN OCT 19 highlighted on the grid.

So there I was: all dressed up, no place to go and feeling like a fool (which just happens to be a line from a song I wrote many moons ago - life imitates art).

Not to waste the effort I had put into forcing myself out the door - not to mention the extra effort I made to beautify myself - I drove out to the main drag and up the road to get milk, which we needed, and cigarettes, which I needed, went to Dunkin' Donuts for an extra large coffee, that I wasn't sure I wanted but figured I really needed, and drove home again. There was my parking space waiting for me, which never would have been the case had this really been Monday.

I struggled back up the four flights of stairs, juggling 2 gallons of milk, my shoulder pouch hanging open with the carton of cigarettes in it, and my extra-large coffee. I was met at the door by my husband, who laughed immoderately when he saw me walk in in a dress...it's just not going to be a good day...

giggles, well dear Cate You just have to turn this around and make it a good day ,,,, You didn't have to work ,,,,,, you are dressed and made the effort to make your self feel better. You got to see the "usual" Route in a different light. There are many positives to this. Look at those ... You don't have to be at the place you hate the most....

I'd hardly call this making a fool of yourself. Nobody knows but you (and hubby). Think if it had been the other way around. You needed to pick up some paper work form the office on a Sunday. Stopped by in ratty jeans and a sweatshirt.
But it was MONDAY..

After Hubby laughed, you could have pretented to cry & say "But, I just wanted to do it all for YOU" Then he could have felt like an idiot & fawned all over you by waiting on you hand & foot.

I haven't worked at a job for a looooong time, but even so, have done same when taking care of something or other for a friend or neighbor, but on the wrong day!!

Smile (takes less face muscles) = Your day will shine all the more now while being all dressed up, too !!!

Hugs

And you were all dressed up to pick up those really essential items in case anyone you know saw you. (They would have been jumping out of the woodwork if you had looked ratty.) Sounds like an excellent start to what could be a terrific day for a change.

Thank you for sharing that tidbit about yourself. I know we all appreciate knowing we aren't alone when we walk to the beat of a different drummer.

I read of one woman who woke up, got dressed to go to work, and climbed on the bus. She couldn't figure out why everyone was looking at her in a strange way until she looked down and discovered that she was only wearing her slip. She forgot to put on her dress. That is the beginning of a very bad day. So cheer up, you showed everyone how bright and beautiful you are on a Sunday morning.

Early morning, you stand at the mirror, eyes still full of sleep, you grab the tube of shaving cream with eyes half focused on what you are doing apply the shaving cream to your tooth brush and clean your teeth, This is when you are suddenly wide awake as bubbles float from your mouth " yep this is going to be on o those days.

i'm lovin' this story and i'm lovin' you dear heart for your honestly and ability to laugh at yourself inspite of your intelligence and 'wicked' wit! .....now about that dress ....
i'm sure you were a "knockout" ..... i hope you did a 'retake' on Monday Cate !!! isn't it funny that when we take the time to 'beautify' ourself, even if we only "hug" a tree, that something magical happens and it's undeniably attractive... because the internal process of feeling good, even joyful, manifests itself outwards ... "vibrationally" speaking ....
ahhhhhhh shucks Cate ... YOU INSPIRE ME ! xox's

PRAISE THE LORD -- hee, heh . . .

I often don't know which day it is since i have no schedule. i work when my agency calls me (which isn't happening very often nowadays) so it really doesn't affect me.

Here's an idea -- treat your 'bossbitch' as if she's a friend of yours. That should make her very insecure wondering what the hell is happening ; )

See ya -- dk
