FAFIA - AFAI
Update & Invitation: May 17
CEDAW 25th Anniversary Event
May 10, 2006
To All FAFIA Members, Partners, Friends and Allies,
First of all, a heartfelt congratulations to all of you who worked during this past federal election to promote FAFIA’s ongoing CEDAW Challenge Campaign and Candidate Pledge.
Not only did you help make women’s human rights an election issue, you helped make history. Thanks to your efforts, nearly 100 candidates, along with the leaders of the four major parties, took the CEDAW pledge. (See http://www.fafia-afai.org/proj/ce/905.php for more details)
Nearly half the candidates who took the pledge now sit in the House of Commons as do the four federal party leaders. That’s a significant number of federally elected representatives who have committed to make women’s human rights a priority for the 39th session of Parliament.
This brings us to the here and now. As you may know, FAFIA is hosting an event on Parliament Hill on Wednesday, May 17th between 5:15 and 6:30 p.m. entitled “25 Years: Ready or Not?”. This gathering is intended to give Parliamentarians more information regarding Canada’s obligations under CEDAW. It also offers FAFIA members an opportunity to talk with Parliamentarians regarding our efforts to ensure Canada’s full accountability for its human rights commitments to women.
Our primary objective for the event is to convey our confidence that with the right approach, the current session of Parliament can potentially be a positive and productive one for the advancement of women’s rights in Canada. We also intend to demonstrate FAFIA’s commitment to working with all Parliamentarians and parties willing to go the distance on the UN recommendations.
The invitation (see below) has been sent to all MPs, Senators, and party leaders. If you are based in the region, or happen to be in the area during this time and are interested and available in attending our event, please let us know as soon as possible. The room is quite small which means that we are offering spaces on a first come, first served basis. As well, due to the security regulations on Parliament Hill, we need the names of guests by 6:00 pm on Monday, May 15th.
To RSVP, send an email to: firstname.lastname@example.org or contact Monique Goguen at 613-232-9505 ext.228 .
Stay tuned for more information about the CEDAW campaign and related activities. In the meantime, thank you again for your ongoing collaboration. We look forward to connecting with you soon.

238-S Centre Block (Commonwealth Room)
- Representatives of the four federal parties;
- Andrée Côté, Director of Law Reform, National Association of Women and the Law;
- Senator Raynell Andreychuk, Chair, Standing Senate Committee on Human Rights.
In 1981, Canada ratified CEDAW, the most comprehensive treaty on women’s human rights.
As part of its CEDAW Anniversary campaign, “25 Years: Ready or Not?”, FAFIA invites parliamentarians to reflect on how far Canada has come, how many miles there are left to go, and how we can work together to achieve our commitments to women’s rights.
