I just watched the entire documentary Torturing Democracy. It is chilling, horrifying, and makes me, as an American trapped in the ugly web of this government's administration for the past 8 years, want to crawl into a hole and hide my face in shame.

Starting with how planes were sent to fly over Afghanistan, with Psy-Ops personnel dropping leaflets all over the country promising riches to warlords and peasants alike for every Arab turned over to the US government, right through to the hellhole that is Guantanamo and missing no horror along the way, this documentary outlines the deliberate, knowing, coercive steps taken by members of the US government to ensure that the CIA and the military were covered by a "golden blanket" protecting them from national and/or international prosecution with memos and legal opinions cooked up by Cheney's Gang of Five, endorsing illegal and immoral treatment of prisoners in CIA black sites, in Iraqi prisons such as Abu Ghraib and at Guantanamo.

You will see how Cheney's bootlicking toadies used every trick they could conjure to get around the prohibitions against torture contained in the language of both the US military code and the Geneva Convention treaty.

You will see George Bush stand before the country, blatantly lying, denying the use of torture, pretending to be appalled by what was revealed about Abu Ghraib, all the while knowing that his Defense Secretary at the time, Donald Rumsfeld, had visited Abu Ghraib and approved everything he saw and heard.

You will see some of the prisoners who suffered the physical torture and psychological indignities telling of their ordeals. You will see an attorney who represents prisoners and also an attorney appointed to prosecute a prisoner, who, after hearing of and witnessing the brutality of Guantanamo, refused to prosecute because he could not in good conscience perpetrate such misery for fraudulent purposes.

In the end, you will realize the lengths that soulless, conscienceless individuals will go to, see the evil and cruelty they will embrace and perpetrate, to cover their tracks while pursuing an agenda of domination by terror.

If you believe, as I and many millions of others do, that 9/11 was an inside job, a false-flag series of acts of death & destruction perpetrated by elements in our government, this documentary is especially disturbing when you realize that these criminals were/are psychologically and physically torturing innocent victims to avoid their own guilt.

When you see the dark machinations concocted by Cheney's Gang of Five, by Rumsfeld, by Alberto Gonzalez, by George W. Bush - who, while not bright enough to plan any of this, gladly went along with the scenario presented to him - then how can you doubt that our government would destroy its own people to serve their dark and secret purposes?

hope that people from other countries who see the undeniable proof of this administration's deliberate contraventions of the Geneva pact and its own military code will realize that until very recently, the American people had no idea or proof of how far the criminals, sadists and psychopaths in charge of our government would go or had gone in their desperation to "prove" who was responsible for 9/11.

I hope the world realizes that any American who openly dissents by participating in demonstrations or other legal methods of criticizing this government for its crimes is subject to arrest, to being sequestered without charges just as the victims at Guantanamo and all the unknown CIA black site facilities are held.

I hope that everyone realizes that Cheney inserted a proviso into a piece of legislation that preemptively forbids any member of this administration being retroactively held responsible for war crimes.

I hope everyone realizes that no matter what is said publicly, there is no doubt that PBS was threatened with funding cut-offs or perhaps worse if they slotted Torturing Democracy for nationwide broadcast before Bush and Cheney are out of office.

Most of all, I hope for forgiveness from the people my country my country shamed, my country harmed - some irredeemably - in the name of protecting America from "terrorists," all the while knowing that the true terrorists were in the White House wearing three-piece suits, eating lavish lunches and laughing and joking as they crafted a regime of unspeakable inhumanity.

Time to rise up my friends. Make your voices heard - elect Obama at least there is a chance he will make a difference but he is in so much danger from those who seek to further their own very dark ends. It is is montrous, it is not what Americans are about - decent and humane, just and hard-working people with the most beautiful and generous country. What riches you have, how resourceful you are. Do you not fear that your proud country will be viewed by history as a neo-nazi regime, as imperalist? Grasping? Bullying? No, no no. Stand for what in your hearts you know is true and don't be afraid. Bring these tyrants down by peaceful means through your phenomenally powerful voice: one nation born of many creeds.

Love to everyone in the USA - not just those who seek the truth but even more to those that need to see it.

The enemy isn't really us, it's our leaders who play cloak and dagger games, who sit in their comfortable conference rooms far removed from the reality of the world and order this stuff.

We simply don't spend our time delving into the truth...we spend our time trying to keep a roof over our kids heads . . .

salaam, as Penney said " it is not what Americans are about" and most of us are not--as well, as she said-it is time to rise up and hopefully if Obama gets elected -change will come-however-as article I posted a few days ago stated--be prepared my friends--because on election day-it will be a NEW DAY of military might as many military will be deployed in cities across the country to "control the people should Obama not win, or if there is "uprising"...this very well be-the start of Marshall law-they may never leave our cities after election day....so our liberties and freedoms will no longer exist and we will be subjected to further risk of imprisonment, being "taken away in the middle of the night" and so forth. It is all in the plan...thus the long time preparation for FEMA camps across the USA which have been being prepared=---FOR US....and yes, they have their "lists" of animal rights advocates, peace advocates, environmental rights activists and others who stand for a free, clean safe country world and safety for animals--why this triage-I not know--but be assured if you CARE-you are on this list....this "falling of America, democracy" has been in the works for many years-finally coming to head on election day-along with who knows what else surprises they have...theses are monstrous deeds Cate...with more to come--but -they have prepared... :(

I have already seen this and it is very disturbing. This country has changed so much. The troops need to be pulled out now and keep them at home. No more war. No more torture. This saddens and disgusts me to no end. Prosecute these men now. Such a disgrace.

The horrors at Abu Ghraib and at Guantanamo sadly I don't feel will ever truly all be revealed nor do I think that justice for it will ever truly be found.

The government has too much power without oversight of their dealings. This we MUST do something about. Torture is not acceptable, no matter what the supposed crime.Terrorists need to be found and stopped, but not treated cruely with torture.

This is a sad depiction of America, and thankfully not all are like these monsters that have abused power.

I need to watch the documentary..
Blessings of hope and peace

Normally I have plenty to say on this matter but it all has been said.Every word that is a comment on this blog and in the blog is truth. The sad tragic part of this is things like this have always gone on.The alphabet soup gang-CIA,NSA,FBI,ect.have always done these things. except now it is no longer hidden and it is in our face they are counting on us being apathetic or two few in mumber to make a difference.
They are only worried about their constituant base which comprises only 40% of the registered voters and untill recently have consisted of mainly white prejudiced people who believe in the propaganda spewed by the spindoctors more commonly known asPR.Kat is correct what has been done in regards to passing legislation that excempts these people from prosicution can be undone for what they have passed is unconstitutional.Bush Cheny and his group of 5 are war criminals and the Constitution of this land does not state that you have to be a citizen for it's protections to apply.Cate I hope you do not mind here but I have to post a plug for my blog on the subject of spindoctors and how they have gotten away with this and how they fool the public.

This goes hand in hand with this subject. It is imperative that we stand up and let it be known that this abomination is not ours- We the Peoples America.I love my country -am very ashamed of our government and what it does in our name.
No matter what happens whatever it is it will not be because I did nothing- Blessings

"We The People" has no meaning anymore! They do whatever they want! No one can stop them. Or maybe we can! I am desperate to put Bush and Cheney behind bars! And then more people like themselves! Will it happen? I don't know! But we have to try! Jesus, starting a fake war!

Thanks, Cate. I think you've spoken for many of us.
It is absolutely essential for information like this to get out, and for people to insist on accountability and criminal proceedings against Bush & company.

Everything has been said here.
Where is the *AMERICA* we all grew up knowing?
Or was it just hidden from us back then too?
I am so sad to see where our country is going.
*WE THE PEOPLE* need to stand up and demand changes. I don't especially think either candidate running for President is gonna be the answer. I *FEEL* bad things on America's horizen. I hate not being optimistict! My *HEART* aches for the country we once knew.
Thanks Cate for *SHINING* your *LIGHT*!

I think I saw something similar on HBO recently, the documentary was called 'Taxi to the Dark Side' and it was very disturbing... I was filled with disgust and felt sick in my stomach....Such inhumanity! It was shameful watching humans having such disrespect and hate for fellow humans...It made me so angry! I'm not sure I can watch one more of such documentaries...
I will watch it eventually Cate, thanks for sharing. But for now, its a saved and link...

The fix, I believe, is in changing who we have governing for us, from the top down. We really need to win the war through diplomacy, not aggression. We can be a country of what is right in the world, instead of a country of what is wrong. It all starts with the people we have governing for us. We the people still have the power, but we have to use it and control it. If we just let the elected officials run rampant like spoiled children, they will. We are the governed, they can only do this with our consent, we must stop giving our consent by not speaking up or putting our foot down. It's time to take back the power.

Now that these deeds have been done, now that the last 8 years will go down in history as corrupted, the only question can be: where do we go from here? There is much fence mending to be done with our allies, but it needs to be done in the open, publicly, with the US admitting its problems and beginning to solve them. Then, our troops need to be pulled from Iraq, not in shame, but knowing we assisted in getting them this far away from Saddam, and allowing them to "take it from here". Democracy or not, up to them. I don't think non-Americans are blaming the typical poor American shmuck (me!) who tries to keep food on the table for this mess;they know Bush/Cheney are responsible. Our mistake was putting them in office (if THAT wasn't manipulated). The time will come that these things will be resolved; I am looking toward that time, however long it takes.....thanks, Ombretta, you're awesome.

Time to realise that the gun only creats more problems than it solves
time to hang up the hat and put away the bombs
time to clean up this mess we call our world
time to do something amazing and declare the peace
time to admit we were wrong, we are wrong and we are sorry
time to come home and hand over to those that will shape the future
time to heal, time to seek peace, time to light the flame of memories
time to melt down our guns and make something useful

After 9/11 the rest of the world wondered why each and every American didn't ask themselves "what have we done to make us the object of such hate in the world?" It was so obvious a question to ask and a question so devastatingly easy to answer as long as you weren’t American. But no one or hardly anyone even thought to ask.

I think George Ws crass, inane and senseless statement about wanting the perpetrators of the 9/11 incidents “dead or alive” caused a collective groan to echo around the world. He just didn’t get it. He didn’t get it al all!

For many years America has behaved like a bully to other peoples and nations but embedded their bullying in such 'civilised’ actions – bringing aid and ‘democracy’ to others (whether they actually wanted the aid with the strings attached or the democracy ‘American style’ or not). Who was going to argue with such harrying power?

I’m not myself overtly political; I’m a 60 year-old psychotherapist from Scotland. I’m amazing myself by writing this.

Americans – wake up to what your governments have done and are doing in your name. Begin to stop them NOW. It's NEVER too late to realise your collective mistake(s) and make amends.

I do not condone any act of violence by anyone - the end is never justified if the means is violence

"Cheney inserted a proviso into a piece of legislation that preemptively forbids any member of this administration being retroactively held responsible for war crimes." Aren't they just too clever! But it didn't work for the Nazis & it shouldn't work for the Bu$h-Leaguers.
It might even bring the World out of this Bu$h-League Recession - because I know Many People would "Pay Per View" to see these criminals tried in World Court!
