The following three petitions are sponsored by Assistance to the Incarcerated Mentally Ill, a Human Rights group with a presence on Care2.  Your urgent attention is needed to help decriminalize mental illness in America and remove our prisons from the hands of greedy PRIVATE PRISON PROFITEERS, who profit by imprisoning ever increasing numbers of citizens for non-violent crimes and issuing lengthy sentences.  America's prison budget is currently $185 BILLION ANNUALLY and growing!

Prisons are for criminals, not disabled people!

Most taxpayers don't know that prisons in America have a population now of 2.3 million inmates, 1.25 million are have mental dysfunctions.  Many were arrested for simple things, like vagrancy, panhandling, etc.  Taxpayers then pay over $100,000 per year for EACH mentally ill inmate, instead of treating them in hospitals or in their communities!  

Patients are often abused in prison by the guards and other prisoners.  Animal abuse is investigated; should the abuse and deaths of our most vulnerable citizens be any different?  Please sign our Petition for Dog Justice for the Mentally Ill, or at least open it and read the petition and the supportive comments from people who CARE.  Our vulnerable citizens in jail have no one to count on if we don't voice our objections to their abuse and wrongful deaths.  Do your part, please.  If not you, who?

PRIVATE PRISON TORTURE:  Mentally Ill Inmate Gets Nine Months in Solitary Confinement - Naked, living in filth!  No baths, no exercise, and no doctors.  After rescue, he was so traumatized that he was "unable to speak a language anyone could comprehend."

Recently, Vice President Chaney and Attorney General Gonzales were indicted for also profiting off the growing private prison industry.  One judge recently sentenced a first offender (a 23-year-old father) to 120 years in prison for passing a note to a pharmacist asking for a refill on painkillers he had been prescribed since he was 17 years old.  The note was not a valid prescription, you see - Rick Kiser had become addicted like Sen. McCain's wife.  But 120 years sentence, no weapon, no prior convictions was outrageous!  Taxpayers pay over $50,000 per inmate, per year to imprison non-violent young men like Ricky, plus he will become their property to force to work and make marketable goods for interstate commerce the rest of his life - SLAVERY.

BACKGROUND ON A PRIVATE PRISON COMPANY:

Corrections Corporation of America (NYSE: CXW) (CCA) is a company that manages public prisons and other facilities, and has concessions for many others.

The company is the fifth largest prison (corrections) system in the United States, behind only 3 states and the federal government. As such, CCA manages 69,000 beds in 64 facilities, of which it owns 40 facilities, in 19 states and Washington, DC

CCA was incorporated on January 28, 1983, by three businessmen who sought to bring the provision of corrections, a traditionally government-administered service, into the private sector. CCA is based in Nashville, Tennessee.

This corporation not only imprisons people, they also manufacture license plates, small table kits (such as those sold through Wal-Mart) and other items. The worst part is that they actually sell stock for this company on Wall Street and anyone can buy it. So basically for the right price our country imprisons people, works them as slaves while they earn pennies an hour and them sell the items to unsuspecting consumers and on top of that sells them as stock...does this system sound familiar to anyone? It rings as loud as slavery!

How can this continue to happen in what is supposed to be a 'free country'? I know some may feel it is ok because the people there supposedly committed a crime, but I have seen first hand how difficult it is for anyone to free themselves from this system once they are in it.  I wonder why?

Maybe private prison profiteers want to keep charging taxpayers $50,000 per year for each prisoner, and much more for the mentally ill, and to keep their slaves!
