I first found out that slavery still exists when I stumbled across a website I would not normally read -- a very right-wing, very political Christian women's site.  There was an article detailing the author's experiences on a trip to Mexico, running into young girls who had been trafficked into the sex trade.
From there, I found another website I wouldn't normally have encountered __ Prison Fellowship Ministry's Wilberforce Forum page.
What I saw scared me -- and motivated me.  I had no idea how many people around the world were living in slavery.  Yes, slavery.  There is no other word for it.  From whole families forced into debt bondage in rice mills and brick factories in India, to foreign nationals kept in foced domestic servitude right here in the States.
I went on to read books on the subject, and I now discuss it with anyone who will listen.
This has become my passion, and I will do anything in my power to further the cause of modern-day abolition.
Part of the solution is to get involved in organizations that eliminate the leading cause of trafficking and slavery-- poverty.  Groups that foster fair trade and micro-credit, groups that inform the public, and groups that conduct rescue operations.
Here are just a few.
