I am happy to learn that Robert the cat has got a new chance of life, and for this I thank you, but I am dismayed to learn about the painful experiments are conducted on animals inside University of Utah laboratories.
The majority of medical schools in the U.S., have replaced their use of live animals in physiology, pharmacology, and/or surgical-training exercises with humane and effective non-animal teaching methods. Besides saving countless animal lives, alternatives to animal tests are efficient and reliable. Non-animal methods usually take less time to complete, cost only a fraction of what the animal experiments that they replace cost, and are not plagued with species differences that make extrapolation difficult or impossible.
Diseases that are artificially induced in animals in a laboratory are never identical to those that occur naturally in human beings. And because animal species differ from one another in many biologically significant ways, it becomes even more unlikely that animal research will yield results that will be correctly interpreted and applied to the human condition in a meaningful way.
I urge you to end the practice of using animals, for any purpose in the university's laboratories and to replaced the use of animals in laboratories with modern Non-animal methods.
Sincerely.

Subject lease, do everything in your power to protect the seals in Scotland
I have just learned that the shooting and killing of seals is not only allowed in Scotland, your Government has been blocking moves to gives seals some legal protection.
I am shocked to learn that the new Marine Act will allow fish farmers and others to shoot pregnant seals and mother seals with dependent pups.
Your Government is condemning seals, including new born baby seals, to death and by refusing to stop this cruel and unnecessary slaughter you are damaging the reputation of Scotland across the globe.
I urge you to outlaw the killing of seals and give seals and their marine environment proper legal protection. Please, do everything in your power to protect the seals.

I submit that this application should never have been accepted by ERMA and should be declined for the following reasons:
1) The application is in direct contradiction of the findings of the Royal Commission on Genetic Modification (RCGM) that recommended food-animals not be used as ‘bioreactors’.
2) It is a breach of natural justice for ERMA to have accepted this application while the High Court decision finding flaws in the development application is still under appeal.
3) It is not reasonable for ERMA to expect me to make an assessment of the all-encompassing list of genetic elements requested by the applicant. Appendix II is a library download of Genetic stock strains, many of the strain numbers are undescribed and unknown, and not one protein that is being created is fully identified.
4) This application does not allow me to understand what is being created in respect to the identity, modification or expression of the GM animal, how many proteins are going to be made or what they are.
5) It is not possible for me or scientists and experts in ethics to make submissions as ERMA has not required the applicant to specify what they are actually doing that is different from existing proteins and patented products.
6) It is wrong to put at risk New Zealand’s bio-security, or the economic value and public-benefit of the New Zealand Brand. Any risk of creating new diseases by experimenting outdoors on NZ animals threaten markets overseas, especially if animal waste, effluent and blood products contaminate land, water or air.
7) I do not agree to the creation of deformities and suffering in animals in order to make ‘cheaper’ pharmaceuticals, when other production methods are available. Treating animals in this way is against my moral, ethical, spiritual, and religious values. The Bioethics Council also called for an ethical review of such practices.
8) This application is so undefined and generic that I do not know how it will affect me or my family, lifestyle or my grandchildren.
I wish ERMA New Zealand to decline the application and restore public confidence.
I wish to be heard in support of my submission

Dear Ms Holden
I heard that you have been hired to open the Harrods Winter Sale on Saturday 26th December, Boxing Day.
Did you know that Harrods is the only department remaining in the UK which still sells real fur, despite the fact that fur farming and trapping is illegal in the UK. Harrods seems to believe that you can't do business without fur, this symbol of ridiculous vanity, based on sheer animal abuse and misery.
Animals on fur farms spend their entire lives confined to cramped, filthy wire cages. Fur farmers use the cheapest and cruelest killing methods available.
On fur factory farms, chinchillas are confined to tiny, filth-encrusted wire cages and are killed by having their necks broken or being electrocuted. The animals convulse, shake, and often cry out before they have heart attacks and die. Crude killing methods aren't always effective, and sometimes animals "wake up" while they are being skinned.
Whether it comes from minks, foxes, raccoons, chinchillas, beavers, rabbits, or lynx, fur looks best on its original owners.
Compassion is always in fashion, cruelty NEVER is.
The Honourable Ministers of Education, Culture, Agriculture, Foreign Affairs and Tourism of the Chinese Government
The Honourable Ambassador of China for the European Affairs and Communities
The Honourable Ambassadors of China in the United Kingdom and Spain
The Honourable Beijing City Officials
Dear Mr. President,
According to recent newspaper articles (including EL MUNDO, 26 November 2009), Spanish bullfighting promoters, lead by bullfighter Manolo Sánchez, have signed an agreement with the Chinese Government and Beijing city officials to create a “ganadería” (a farm to breed bulls for bullfights in China) and a bullring in Huairo-Beijing.
The shipment of bulls to China is scheduled for January and the bullring is said to be built by October 2010 and inaugurated with the performance of two bullfights. From 2011, Manolo Sánchez intends to organise 16 bullfights a year in Beijing – four each month (in June, July, August and September of each year).
With this message, I join ANIMAL, from Portugal, CAS International, from The Netherlands, and the League Against Cruel Sports, from the United Kingdom, in calling on you to take all the necessary steps to prevent these or any other bullfighting promoters from staining China with this gruesome activity. There are many important, respectable and beautiful manifestations of the Spanish and European culture that China can host with success and be praised for – but the evil and nowadays ruinous business of bullfighting is not one of them. Your successful hosting of the Olympic Games demonstrates how well China can host decent, respectable events without the need for animal suffering.
Contrary to what the bullfighting industry may want you to believe, bullfighting is no longer an important part of the Spanish culture. It reflects only a very small, archaic and cruel part of it, and Spanish people no longer see it as a reflection of values and culture of the present day. Spain has changed tremendously, as all countries have and today the cruelty towards animals, particularly bullfighting, is heavily criticized within Spanish society. Indeed, more than sixty municipalities in Spain have banned bullfighting and declared themselves anti-bullfighting cities, as have others in Portugal and France – the remaining two states of the European Union where bullfighting takes place. The Spanish region of Catalonia is expected to ban bullfighting completely in early 2010.
Furthermore, bullfighting will not attract tourists to China. On the contrary, recent opinion polls have shown that Europeans are strongly opposed to bullfighting and stay distant from the blood sport. For example, 89 percent of British citizens would never visit a bullfight when on holiday (ComRes poll commissioned by the League Against Cruel Sports, 2008).
Animal cruelty is a factor that influences the choices of tourists: people do not want to visit cities or countries where animals are not respected, so China would only lose tourists if bullfighting would be brought to your country – not the opposite.
Finally, the fall of the bullfighting industry is so strong and unavoidable, that this industry is seeking to export bullfighting to countries where such a cruel activity has never existed, in order to save this barbaric business from the extinction that it is facing in Europe and in Latin America.
Thanking you in advance for your attention, we look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience.
Yours, respectfully,

I stand behind NASA's mission. However, the use of live animals in space radiation tests is a major leap backward for humankind. Please do not subject squirrel monkeys to high-energy gamma-ray radiation to assess human response to long-term space voyages.
I agree that space radiation may endanger astronauts traveling far distances, such as a trip to Mars. But animal experiments generate misleading results. Physiological, anatomical, and psychological variations between species make accurate extrapolation to humans unlikely. And while primates and humans share genetic likeness, their disease process and treatment differ tremendously. It is precarious to base "neurobehavioral effects of radiation on humans" upon non-predictive monkey tests.
I encourage NASA to continue utilizing animal-free technology, such as in vitro methods with cellular components of human derivation. As you know, modern bioengineers have devised models with blood vessels and organ characteristics that better imitate human tissue function and design. A March 2009 Biotechnology and Bioengineering report details these 3D cellular systems derived from "building blocks" of active human cells.
Irradiating monkeys calls for experimenters to repeatedly blast restrained animals with gamma rays comparable to three years in space. Once tests conclude at Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York, the monkeys spend their lives as test subjects in a Harvard Medical School project.
Renowned primatologist Dr. Jane Goodall has shown that primates form social unions and experience complex emotions. Certainly, these sentient creatures experience pain and loneliness. I respectfully ask Administrator Bolden and his NASA colleagues to end this pointless cruelty.

Subject: ponies needing placements or homes
Hi Helen,
On 5th December over 100 Welsh Mountain ponies ranging from this years foals to 2 year olds were auctioned at Conway, N Wales. 67 of the ponies were not sold and originally an agreement was made by the breeder to sell them at £3 each to the meatman. They were to be collected on Monday 7th December. The Meatman didn't turn up and we have a short window of opportunity to get these ponies into homes or into sanctuarys. There are currently 30 who have not got anywhere to go and the farmer has extended the time we have to place them to 19th December. The ponies are unhandled.
The ponies are subject to a deposition order and have to be microchipped for passporting at a cost of £15.00 each before we can move them.
What we need is homes or placements (even if this is temporary) for the ponies, help with transport and funds to cover the microchipping, gelding and passporting.
If you can help please call 07960 230548 Bernadette Langfield at Shy Lowen Horse and Pony Sanctuary www.shylowen.com

Subject : Let compassion into your heart concerning Lucy
Aan: denise.prefontaine@edmonton.ca CC: zoocheck@zoocheck.com To : Zoo's Director Denise Prefontaine,
Dear Madam,
I polite urge you to let compassion into your heart concerning Lucy, the lonely elephant.
I want to let you know that I want Lucy moved to The Elephant Sanctuary as soon as possible because :
- Lucy is kept alone and elephants do not naturally live in isolation and require social interaction with other elephants Lucy belongs to a species that NEED other elephants, as a family, to live a HAPPY elephant-life, and denying this to Lucy is nothing else than ANIMAL CRUELTY, done on purpose!!
- given the inhospitable weather (the Edmonton is too cold for elephants) Lucy is forced to live indoors for several months of the year - of the lack of space and the inadequate conditions for elephants at the Valley Zoo - keeping Lucy is in contravention of Alberta's zoo regulations.
Unlike a zoo, an elephant sanctuary can provide the space elephants need and natural terrain that promotes health and well-being. Keeping her any longer is animal abuse. Start the new year 2010 with compassion and give Lucy happiness for the rest of her life. She suffered enough. Thank you for your careful consideration.
Sincerely,
You can send photos of Lucy (http://www.savelucy.ca/take-action-for-lucy) and the text below. Lucy (34 years old) is the most northerly elephant in North America. She came from Sri Lanka as an infant and has spent nearly all of her life in the Valley Zoo's tiny elephant yard. She stands stationary much of the time, sometimes rocks back and forth, and has suffered from numerous ongoing health issues, including arthritis.
The forecast for Edmonton says the temperature will plunge to minus 29 degrees Celsius very soon. That kind of cold weather means more time inside for Lucy. All elephants are wide ranging animals that should be outdoors as much as possible walking, foraging and doing the other things that elephants do.
The Valley Zoo and City of Edmonton try to paint a rosy picture of Lucy's life. But how rosy can it be for an elephant from the tropics who lives in a northern city in a tiny enclosure with no other elephants.
Zoocheck has offered to fly in leading elephant veterinarians to examine Lucy, at no cost to the zoo, but they won't let anyone else examine her.
At the Valley Zoo, Lucy's keepers go home at the end of the day and when they do, Lucy is left alone until the next morning. Normal elephant families don't disband at night and then reassemble the next morning. They're together all the time and their relationships last a lifetime. The Valley Zoo never talks about the risk of keeping Lucy. If the history of elephants in captivity is any indication, then Lucy's ongoing health issues will eventually kill her, far before she ever reaches old age. A good proportion of elephants in zoos die in their late 30s and early 40s, far short of their potential lifespan (like the three elephants that died at the Toronto Zoo in the past 14 months).
The oldest documented Asian elephant lived to be 86 years old. Given the right conditions, Lucy could have many years ahead.

President Obama, Vice President Biden, Acting Assistant Attorney General Cruden, Secretary Salazar, Bureau of Land Management, and Members of Congress:
The Bureau of Land Management has mishandled the Wild Horse and Burro Program for years -- governing for extinction rather than preservation.
Despite vast public opposition, the agency's 2010 Round-Up Schedule calls for the seizure of another 12,000 wild horses and burros, with taxpayers footing a $32 million bill. By catering to special interests such as big game hunting, mining, oil drilling, development, and ranching, BLM impounds more horses than it can adopt out. To deal with "surplus" American horses and burros in federal holding, the animals commonly wind up on the auction block, sold to "killer-buyers," and trucked to foreign kill floors.
I understand a lawsuit has been filed to stop the removal of more than 2,500 horses in Nevada's Calico Complex. Originally slated for December 9, 2009, the mass roundup is now delayed until December 28. I sincerely hope the delay results in a permanent injunction against the roundup, and also prompts the Justice Department to intensify its investigation of BLM.
The Calico Complex removal exemplifies some core problems with BLM. After the same herd was corralled in 2005, all mares among an estimated 575 horses left on the range received contraceptive vaccines. Today, BLM argues that 3,000 horses roam the area. It is outlandish to assert that a small herd controlled with contraception quintupled in size in less than five years. In fact, residents accustomed to the herd claim numbers are far lower.
Ultimately, the government must place a moratorium on roundups until impartial analysts count how many wild horses and burros literally inhabit public lands. Moreover, I urge the White House and Congress to advocate reinstatement of wild horses and burros in their native Western range, where they can live naturally as American symbols of majesty and freedom.
The Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burro Act of 1971 (ROAM) will renew protections originally granted in 1971. Passage of this bill would keep these magnificent creatures where they belong -- on public, Western rangelands. I am counting on your support and look forward to your reply.
Sincerely,

As you are certainly well aware of, every year more than 54 million animals are sacrificed in all kind of experiments. These animals are made to suffer and end up being killed. This is inhuman and cruel and it is absolutely necessary that all possible efforts are made to use methods that do not involve animals.
As citizens of the EU we need your help to protect as much as possible of these animals and therefore we are urging you to sign the Written Declaration on the promotion of alternatives to animal research and testing 53/2009 ,and help us convince your colleagues to do the same.
We specifically demand that more money will be made available by the EU for scientific research into alternative testing methods to replace the cruel and inhumane testing currently performed upon animals. To make this possible, we must find 50% of all European MP’s prepared to sign this Written Declaration 53/2009. If we fail to do so the issue will, again, be abandoned and be pushed ahead of us by a length of time. Time, we feel, we don’t have.

Journal Entry by Jason Miller
12/7/09
Today Jason Miller and Bite Club of KC, acting pro se, filed a Temporary Restraining Order against Michael Meadors and the Johnson County Parks and Recreation District in the District Court of Johnson County to restrain “Defendants from carrying out a deer herd reduction in Shawnee Mission Park and adjacent park properties through the use of archers or by other lethal means.”
The Petition also stated, “Once presented with the facts, the Court will very likely grant a Permanent Injunction, prohibiting Michael Meadors and the Johnson County Parks and Recreation District from enabling the gratuitous slaughter of any additional deer in Shawnee Mission Park, or any public properties under their jurisdiction.”
The accompanying Affidavit cited 13 instances of unethical or illegal actions committed by the Defendants:
1. The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks admitted that suppressors are illegal, yet the Defendants used them in the initial sharpshooting phase of the deer herd reduction in Shawnee Mission Park. See exhibits 1 and 2.
2. The Defendants used spotlighting in the initial sharpshooting phase of the deer herd reduction in Shawnee Mission Park, despite spotlighting being illegal in the state of Kansas.
3. The Defendants willfully altered the deer kill log table and failed to complete it properly. This represents another violation of Kansas law. See exhibit 3
4. The Defendants authorized and carried out the sharpshooting phase of the cull despite having established no Johnson County Parks and Recreation District policy addressing sharpshooting.
5. The Defendants conducted a grossly inaccurate and potentially fraudulent secondary deer census that was skewed in such a way that the resulting deer population count necessitated archers to kill more deer in Shawnee Mission Park.
6. The Defendants willfully misled the public to believe that lethal deer management was the only viable way of managing the deer overpopulation problem in Shawnee Mission Park.
7. The deer overpopulation problem came about due to the Defendants’ gross negligence and mismanagement.
8. The Defendants severely abused their power by ignoring public commentary at their meetings that was overwhelmingly in favor of managing the deer overpopulation problem through nonlethal means.
9. The Defendants rejected implementing a viable, cost-effective, comprehensive nonlethal deer management plan on the premise that fencing approximately 300 deer in a 40-60 acre preserve was equivalent to trapping wildlife, a gross distortion of intellect and language.
10. The Defendants blatantly lied to me, a taxpaying member of the community they serve, in response to my question to them as to whether or not they were enlisting the services of Anthony DeNicola and White Buffalo, Inc. See exhibit 4
11. The Defendants have authorized archers to use cross-bows and broad-head arrows, despite Section 2.1.5 of the Johnson County Code of Regulations for the Park and Recreation District prohibiting both “within the boundaries of any District Facility.” See exhibit 5
12. Based on video evidence gathered from a similar sharp shoot supervised and conducted by Anthony DeNicola and White Buffalo, the 313 deer killed in Shawnee Mission Park in early November most likely suffered immensely, despite DeNicola’s claim that the shooting of the 313 deer was carried out in the “was carried out in the most humane way possible.” See exhibits 6 and 7
13. After having killed 313 deer with sharpshooters, which reduced the population significantly enough that nonlethal means to manage the remaining deer would be highly effective, the Defendants are now preparing to kill more deer via bow hunting, a demonstrably cruel and ineffective method of killing deer. See exhibits 8 and 9

Like all animals, cows and bulls value their lives and don’t want to die. Stories abound of cows who have gone to extraordinary lengths to fight for their lives. They are as diverse as cats, dogs, and people: Some are bright; others are slow learners. Some are bold and adventurous; others are shy and timid. Some are friendly and considerate; others are bossy and devious.
They can be highly intelligent, moderately so, or slow to understand; friendly, considerate, aggressive, docile, inventive, dull, proud, or shy. According to recent research, in addition to having distinct personalities, they are generally very intelligent animals who can remember things for a long time. Animal behaviourists have found that cows interact in socially complex ways, developing friendships over time, sometimes holding grudges against cows who treat them badly, forming social hierarchies within their herds, and choosing leaders based upon intelligence.
They are emotionally complex as well and have the capacity to worry about the future. They are intelligent and curious beings who enjoy solving problems and interacting with their environment. They have long memories and are capable of learning lessons from each other, just as humans do.
We hope You will be able to prevent this horror .

I am sure that you are in a position to call some humane society or other in your town to deal with situations and emergencies connected with animals.
Kindly advise your security guards that it is most unmanly, cowardly, base, cruel and vile to corner, beat and injure some innocent and defenceless animal which is unfortunate enough to cross their evil path.
Yours truly, --------------------------

Dear Friend,
For half a century, the Blue Cross of India has been there helping animals. Now the Blue Cross needs your help, more than ever, to continue this work. As a member, you have contributed to our efforts in animal welfare. Thanks to you, we’ve been able to save lives, treat illnesses and rehabilitate the injured. We’re writing to you now to ask for your help with one more crucial rescue – our ambulance service which forms the heart of our operations.
Our ambulances have been instrumental in picking up community dogs for ABC-AR (Animal Birth Control and Anti Rabies) which has resulted in a drastic decrease in the dog population and Chennai being declared a rabies-free city. Our seven emergency vans take turns being available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, throughout the year for homeless kittens that are abandoned, dogs that have nearly been killed in road accidents and victims of serious abuse like a temple bull that was splattered with acid. We need to get to these animals every time there is a call for help and we need to get there fast.
The past two years have been amongst the hardest Blue Cross has had to face. Since the economy collapsed worldwide, we’ve struggled with a drop in donations and have not received any government grants either. And, as you may be aware, the Blue Cross is fortunate in having a group of professional who donate their time and effort on a purely honorary basis, thus ensuring that all money received by us goes directly into helping animals without any of it being eroded by administrative expenses.
Our newest ambulance is five years old and the oldest is thirteen! They cover vast distances and go up to Kanchipuram, Avadi, Maraimalainagar plus the whole of Greater Chennai.
The maintenance costs per ambulance are Rs. 2.7 lakhs a year inclusive of drivers’ salaries, attendants’ salaries, diesel and maintenance. With rescues and animal birth control being our top priority, we cannot suspend these services or cut costs on this front. Please make a tax-deductible donation of any amount, large or small to the Blue Cross of India today and help us keep our word when we say to a suffering animal: “Hang on. Help is on the way”.
Please go to this website and click on. IT IS FOR FREE and every click helps the animal shelters in South Africa. Please click EVERY Day Hi, all you animal lovers!
This is simple... Please tell ten friends to each tell a further ten today!
This Site is having trouble getting enough people to click daily so they can meet their quota of getting free food donated every day to abused and neglected animals. It takes about 15 seconds to go to their site and click on the purple box 'fund food for animals. This doesn't cost you anything.
Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising.

I have learned that the Government plans to use helicopters to herd the camels about nine miles outside of town of Docker River, where they will be shot and their carcasses left to decay in the desert.
The plan to kill camels by helicopter is cruel and barbaric, the community could instead focus on setting up barriers to keep out the camels.
Lethal methods don't work to control camles or other wild-animal populations in the long run. As long as the areas of concern remain accessible to these animals, more will move in from surrounding areas.
I urge you to halt this inhumane program. I appeal to you to find an alternate solution to this issue, because killing animals don’t help to solve the problem.
This is unspeakable torture. And once again it is a Bull. Were these creatures damned from birth? Or are we humans the fiends from hell? Leave a comment at the site. GRAPHIC HORROR warning - pics and videos

Imagine if you will, a town where city kennel workers catch all dogs, abandoned or not, to kill them or torture them - or to do "experiments" like cutting off their ears, to see if another dog breed's ears will grow...
The video has circulated about militars of Bolivia torturing a dog, off of my mind. Sadistic monsters.
Nepal's government upheld this year's Gadhimai Jatra mass animal sacrifice, despite strong global protest. On Nov. 24-25, some 250,000 animals were mutilated and beheaded in what may be the world's largest religious slaughter. We've modified our pre-festival sample letter and urge everyone to send comments. This grotesque butchery must end.
SNAPSHOTS FROM OBSERVERS Tue, 24 Nov 2009 / Manoj Gautam, Representative of Roots and Shoots Nepal: "Thousands of buffaloes were standing in an enclosure when butchers holding swords started hacking randomly at the animals. Baby buffaloes were bleating and searching for their mothers. They were hunted down by the men. Needless to say, not a single animal survived the blood bath..."
Krishna Singh, Programme Manager Animal Nepal: "I visited Gadhimai before the killing... A baby goat died from a lack of food and water... The baby buffaloes wanted to be petted. They were scared and needed some comfort."
Bibi Funyal, photographer: "I was assigned to film the festival... In the beginning butchers were able to cut the heads of buffaloes in one stroke. Later it took them a long time to severe heads. Buffaloes were mooing -- it was a terrible sound... I had to step over thousands of bodies and heads and wade through animal blood. It was something I will never do again..."
Lucia de Vries, Director Animal Nepal, international campaigner: "I am convinced that these killings are among the worst forms of animal cruelty in the world. I pray that when the images come out the international community will agree that we have to stop this." Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Mr. Sharat Singh Bhandari, Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation
Permanent Mission of Nepal to the United Nations
Honorable Prime Minister and Officials of Nepal:
I am stunned by the magnitude of cruelty in the semi-annual Gadhimai Jatra festival in Bara, Nepal. Fields fill with blood as sword-bearing butchers casually hack apart baby buffalo and their elders. How can Nepal justify the mutilation of hundreds of thousands of goats, buffalo, pigs, chickens, rats and pigeons as "sacrifice" to the Hindu goddess of power, Gadhimai?
The Gadhimai alienates potential tourists, like myself, who object to the senseless brutalization of animals. Furthermore, it desensitizes your own children, teaching them to ignore suffering and celebrate violence.
Please ban all blood festivals. I urge the Nepalese government to enforce stronger animal protection laws that shield animals from all forms of abuse, including grotesque rituals such as the Gadhimai Fair.
The November 24-25, 2009 festival didn't fail to repulse any human with a conscience. One filmmaker noted that the butchers killed in a frenzy, unable to sever heads quickly. "Baby buffalo searched for mothers. One touched my tripod. That was when I felt I'd pass out if I continued filming. When I left, I had to step over bodies and heads and wade through animal blood..."
As you know, the two-day contest involves men armed with knives who vie to slaughter the most animals. Contestants are awarded a fee for each kill. Death does not come quickly. Based on the "panchhbali" (five offerings), competitors slit the throats of five different species. Buffalo take so long to die that men cut them apart, starting with their back legs.
I am shocked that Nepalese officials not only allow this festival, but also pay to confine animals before it begins. Religious leaders themselves have proposed fruits and vegetables in place of animal sacrifice. I respectfully ask you to embrace this nonviolent option and/or do everything within your power to permanently cancel the Gadhimai festival.
Different cultures may not understand each other's customs, but all humans comprehend cruelty. The world recognizes the Gadhimai Jatra as outright animal torture. It's time that Nepal's government does too.
UPDATE: Remember Phoenix, the one-year-old pit bull terrier soaked in gasoline and set afire? Police officer Syreeta Teel spotted her flailing in the streets and heroically pounded out the flames with her sweatshirt. Phoenix "rose from the ashes" long enough to be loved by her rescuers, but was ultimately euthanized when extensive burns caused her kidneys to fail.
Now, her killers, twin brothers Tremayne and Travers Johnson, 17, have been indicted and face arraignment DEC. 9, 2009. Indictment is not a guilty verdict. They are still "innocent" until proven guilty. PHOTO: Baltimore Sun

Honorable David W. Young, Baltimore City State's Attorney Office, Mayor Sheila Dixon and City Council:
I have followed the case of Phoenix, a one-year-old pit bull terrier soaked in gasoline and set afire on May 27, 2009. I understand the Baltimore City Grand Jury indicted twin brothers Tremayne and Travers Johnson, 17, on five counts of animal abuse and cruelty.
I thank the state's attorney office and court for its serious deliberation in this heinous crime. Phoenix was euthanized in caring hands after her kidneys failed. Swollen and charred, her immune system simply couldn't handle burns covering 95% of her body.
But this case is as much about the twins as it is about Phoenix. These youths are so desensitized to suffering, they ignored the cries of a living creature enveloped in flames.
I urge you to levy felony animal cruelty penalties that include up to three years in prison, a $5,000 fine, and mandatory counseling. If the Johnsons are involved in dogfighting, as suggested by puncture wounds seen on Phoenix, please punish them under animal fighting laws too. I hope you will ensure these teens are barred from contact with animals.
Juvenile violence is often connected with musings on death and Goth anarchy. Along with these dark images comes a fascination with victimizing animals. Indeed, Columbine's Eric Harris, D.C. serial killer Lee Boyd Malvo, murderer Kip Kinkle and others "practiced" on animals before graduating to people.
Andrew Golden, 11, and Mitchell Johnson, 13, killed dogs in Jonesboro, Arkansas prior to gunning down four students and one teacher. Mississippi 16-year-old Luke Woodham mortally stabbed his mother, killed three classmates and shot seven more. Later in court, he confessed to bludgeoning his dog with baseball bats and setting her on fire.
One U.S. study revealed that five of 11 killers involved in nine separate school rampages had formerly abused animals. In another study, "Childhood Cruelty Toward Animals Among Criminals and Noncriminals," 25% of aggressive criminals confessed to five or more acts of torturing animals.
Clearly, the animal-to-human violence link demands your utmost attention. I reiterate my request that Mayor Dixon and the City Council address violence at its roots by creating an animal abuse task force with citizen representation. Please also empower animal control officers under the police department and advocate prosecution in all animal abuse and fighting cases.
Thank you, in advance, for punishing Phoenix' killers to the fullest degree allowed by law.
Sincerely,

Subject : No to Italian hell in the city of Campobasso in Molise!
Dear Madam, dear Sir,
I fully subscribe the contents of this letter,
I urge you to make every effort to support enforcing existing laws that protect cats and dogs and to support even more harsher measures on their behalf.
Please use your authority, influence and voice to put an end to the Italian hell in the city Campobasso in Molise !
The situation in shelter Santo Stefano, with around 750 imprisoned dogs, is going worse every day.
It is so scandalous: last Saturday there was another massacre between the two dogs in a crowded shelter abandoned and forgotten by God and the world. One dog died, another is in a very serious condition.
Nobody does anything to separate aggressive dogs from the small ones etc.
We went to look to the shelter and as always
1) Nobody was there
2) The company which should take care of the shelter, clean etc. (Gener Service srl Avellino) is receiving 232.756, 79 euros. But it doesn´t do anything!
3) Now the company has only 3 employees, who are working every day for six hours per day. It is absurd to care and clean 750 pens and feed 750 dogs.
Veterinars must make controls and are responsible of interventions provided by law.
The public expect from animal welfare organizations in case of serious and critical situation, an immediate intervention and a judgement of the guilty persons.
Italians save the whole world and their own dogs and cats they let to die. I wonder, how they can save dogs from Spain and Romania, if they can not take care of their own animals and save them?
Thank you all for help

Hi All:
Today every senior official and staff workers of the Toronto Humane Society have been arrested for animal cruelty.
Hundreds of animals were left in their cages without food or medical attention. Dogs and cats died from cancer and starvation.
The President Mr. Trom was also arrested and charged.
If convicted, they all face 5 years in prison, a ten thousand dollar fine, and a lifetime ban on owning animals.
This is a major victory for all of the animal activists in the Toronto area.
Feel free to contact the Ministry of the Attorney General at this address:

Announcement: As of November 2009, Selfridges have stopped selling foie gras and have pledged not to replenish their stock.
PETA's two-year campaign to get Selfridges to drop foie gras from their shelves has ended in a victory, pushing forward our campaign to end the misery of ducks and geese who are force-fed. In a telephone call on 9 November to Sir Roger Moore – who has been our chief spokesperson on this issue – Selfridges confirmed that they have ended the sale of foie gras in their stores, promising not to stock this ugly stuff in the future.
This wonderful step forward could not have been possible without the support of compassionate celebrities, dedicated PETA members and volunteers, and others. We at PETA thank Sir Roger Moore for his commitment to the campaign from the outset to the conclusion, and we thank the multitude of activists who wore everything from duck costumes to dinner jackets (and even nothing at all!) in demonstrations outside Selfridges' stores in all types of weather.
More than 5,000 compassionate people sent e-mails to Selfridges executives via our website, and thousands made telephone calls and posted letters. People across the world learned about our campaign through television, newspaper articles and internet sources, including massively popular blogs.
While we celebrate, as we should, please remember that there are still millions of wonderful animals huddled together in pens or cages, destined to end up on someone's dinner plate or worn on someone's back. In their honor, please make a donation today to help PETA's vital work and produce more victories like this one.

Now, the National Turkey Federation has been bringing its finest turkeys to the White House for more than 50 years. I'm told Presidents Eisenhower and Johnson actually ate their turkeys. You can't fault them for that; that's a good-looking bird. (Laughter.) President Kennedy was even given a turkey with a sign around its neck that said, "Good Eatin', Mr. President." But he showed mercy and he said, "Let's keep him going." And 20 years ago this Thanksgiving, the first President Bush issued the first official presidential pardon for a turkey.
Today, I am pleased to announce that thanks to the interventions of Malia and Sasha -- because I was planning to eat this sucker -- (laughter) -- "Courage" will also be spared this terrible and delicious fate. Later today, he'll head to Disneyland, where he'll be grand marshal of tomorrow's parade. And just in case "Courage" can't fulfill his responsibilities, Walter brought along another turkey, "Carolina," as an alternate, the stand-in.
Now, later this afternoon, Michelle, Malia, Sasha and I will take two of their less fortunate brethren to Martha's Table, an organization that does extraordinary work to help folks here in D.C. who need it the most. And I want to thank Jaindl's Turkey Farm in Orefield, Pennsylvania, for donating those dressed birds for dinner. So today, all told, I believe it's fair to say that we have saved or created four turkeys. (Laughter.)

What happened :
Dear Friends,
our province of Entre Rios (Among Rivers its literal translation) is practically under water, the worst flood since 1959 due to El Niño and of course the deforestation of the Amazone. We are surrounded by rivers (north, south, east and west) and the biggest is The River Parana and the River Uruguay, very wide and powerful rivers both.
We are sending this email because we want to express our immense gratitute to our State Police of Entre Rios, the have been risking their lives to save pets' lives. In the picture below we see an officer with water up to his waist saving a little cat who was crying desperately. Thanks to our police no pets have drowned
If you want to congratulate our police and encourage them to keep up the good work you can send emails to our Superintendet Comisario General Hector Roberto Massuh who is also working in the disaster area.
I am writing to you with regard to Pete the moose, based in Vermont. I understand that the Vermont Department of Fish & Wildlife wants to destroy Pete and the other animals living on a reserve in Vermont.
Part of Pete's diet comes from from animal feed. Because of this, Vermont State Officials are claiming animals kept at this reserve could contract something called "Chronic Wasting Disease", a brain ailment that affects deer-like animals, and which can be spread animal-to-animal or via feed. My understanding is the Dept of Fish & Wildlife would like to "remove" the deer and moose that now inhabit this property. To be clear, by "remove", you mean "kill". You have known about the existence of Pete right from when he was a new born, after he was attacked by dogs and mauled when he was about 5 days old.
When you were informed of poor Pete's predicament at that time, but Vermont Fish & Wildlife told the people who found Pete to let him die. You've done nothing to help Pete lead a normal life, but I am writing to you to appeal that you do now.
Please leave Pete where he is, in safety and care, where people are ensuring his welfare. Pete and the other animals that live on the reserve are well and in lovng hands. No one wants to see Pete destroyed as you suggest, and no one wants to see him in a zoo either -- especially as where he is living is so much better adapted to his needs.
Please leave Pete where he is and stop trying to prevent the reserve from taking such excellent care of him.
Fur and fur trims such as neck fur, stoles, coats, ponchos, shawls, scarfs, bags, hats, fur hats, legwarmers, gloves, belts, even keyrings and cell phone covers, hide enormous animal suffering.
Both for how the animals are raised (small cages, cold, non-existent hygienic-sanitary conditions, confinement has severe psychological implications, fear), and killed (electrocution, nape shot, gas poisoning, hammer blow on the muzzle, nail stick into the front, drowning).
These animals are foxes, ermines, minks, chinchilla , rabbits and many other animals such as cats and dogs. In some Oriental countries, such as China, animals are skinned alive!
Many designers took the ethical decision to stop using fur and fur trims in their collections. What are you waiting for?
I commit to spread the atrocities that you indirectly support, and will tell all my friends and family to boycott you until you go fur-free and stop exploit animals for their skins

I've been asked to forward the information below. Unfortunately I haven't time to turn it into better English but it is perfectly understandable. 30 January 2010 will be the second edition of the World Day for the Abolition of Meat.
What is the World Day for the Abolition of Meat?
The World Day for the Abolition of Meat is intended to promote to the general public the political demand for the abolition of murdering animals for meat. Six million sentient beings are killed worldwide every hour (!) to be transoformed into meat, whithout even counting the fish, which are of course included in the demand for the abolition of meat. Meat consumption causes more suffering and death than any other human activity and it is not even necessary. Many groups will mobilize to promote the prospect of the abolition of meat. They will not only promote vegetarianism / veganism to individuals but will express to society that the practice of killing animals to eat them should be abolished. We hope that this initiative will strengthen the animal rights movement over the years. It is important to speak to consumers, but we must begin to speak to citizens as have activists for the abolition of slavery, who even though were a clear minority not only sought the population to boycott the sugar produced by slaves, but also clearly expressed the idea that slavery should be prohibited. It is important today to question the whole society about the murder of animals for meat so that it can no longer avoid the consequences of a public debate on the legitimacy of this practice.
On the occasion of this day on 31st January, conferences, street actions, distribution of leaflets and information stands will be organized to spread the idea that consumption of meat can not be justified ethically and should therefore be abolished for this reason - as well as human slavery was in its time.
Here is the video of an original action for the abolition of meat, made by Swiss activists in 2007 (which may of course be taken over by other groups): http://www.youtube. com/watch? v = z-iUs0kaDB0
Be part of the international movement for the abolition of meat
Hello,
We are a group of forty people from different backgrounds who have been working on a project for which we'd like your advice and support. The project involves demanding the worldwide abolition of meat.
Meat causes more suffering and death than any other human activity.
Eating meat implies either a denial of animals' ability to suffer, or simply indifference to their suffering. This denial and indifference are reflected in the lack of consideration given to sentience in general, both human and non-human. Meat-eating has a negative influence on people's concern for animals in many other contexts.
The history of human slavery, and campaigns for its abolition in the 18th and 19th centuries, has convinced us of the need to formulate a demand for the abolition of meat. This could take the form of a clear political demand, worded in a way that makes it acceptable to as many people as possible. Working together in a group online, we have agreed to use the following wording:
Because meat production requires the killing of animals, because their living conditions and slaughter cause many of them to suffer, because sentient beings shouldn't be mistreated or killed unnecessarily, therefore, farming, fishing and hunting animals for their flesh, as well as selling and eating animal fleshshould be abolished.
This resolution is based on a widespread belief, common to most countries, that sentient beings should neither be mistreated nor killed without necessity. Logically,
* meat requires the killing and mistreatment of animals
* meat isn't necessary
therefore, meat should be abolished.
With your help we hope to launch this demand in 2008, the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of the Rights of Man, which abolished human slavery worldwide. We are hoping also that an international movement will be created to carry the message so that our goal is reached before the end of the century in some countries. This will not mean the end of all animal exploitation, nor of speciesism, nor of all animal suffering. However, it will be a real progress, and could be a basis on which further progress can be achieved.
We would be very pleased if you would support our resolution, and help us to publicize it.
We are planning an event to launch the project in Paris. Representatives from all sections of the animal rights movement will be invited. They will undertake to support the declaration for the abolition of meat, and will be able to express their opinion on the best ways to popularize the movement. Vegetarian personalities and the international media will also attend the launch, which will take place in a Parisian location.
Each participant or group will choose their own way of promoting the project, in the same way that the demand for the abolition of slavery was supported by very different groups and individuals.
Communication between the interested parties to this project is essential. Knowing each other's opinions and debating them enables the different members of the movement to keep abreast of initiatives, strategies, problems, and means, and if necessary to pool their efforts.
You are invited to join either the French discussion list:
http://fr.groups. yahoo.com/ group/abolitiong roup/or the international list (in English) :
We would be delighted if some of you were to open lists or forums in other languages on the theme of the abolition of meat.
Looking forward to reading your questions and reactions, either on one of the abovementioned lists, or at this address: contact@m-eat. org,
Yours sincerely,

Help secure the hunting banPosted by: "Greyhound Action" greyhoundaction@yahoo.co.uk greyhoundaction We've received the message below from the North West Hunt Saboteurs Association. Please contact your local candidates, using the link provided.
We at Greyhound Action are no lovers of the Labour government, owing to their general failure to protect animals and their vicious persecution of animal liberation activists.
We do, however, support the ban on hunting with dogs and would like to see it strengthened, extended and much more rigorously enforced, with far harsher penalties (all the way up to life imprisonment for the worst offenders).
Don't forget that it isn't just wild animals that are the victims of hunting. Thousands of dogs (including greyhounds and lurchers used for coursing) are put to death every year when no longer wanted by the hunters.
Please feel free to forward/crosspost/ circulate this message.
----- Original Message ----- From: North West Hunt Saboteurs Association Sent: Thursday, November 19, 2009 9:25 AM Subject: Help secure the hunting ban
The 18th November marked the fifth anniversary of the Royal Assent of the 2004 Hunting Act.
It was a day on which this country made a clear statement that hunting with dogs had no place in modern Britain.
But not everyone was pleased. There are those who've been lobbying for the ban's repeal since day one. They think they're getting closer to their aim but you can help stop them in their tracks.
Those who want to see the return of the grotesque spectacle of hounds tearing foxes apart think that they can do so despite opposition from the British people.
They know the public don't support using dogs to tear foxes apart - and they know that they can only make progress by keeping quiet about their aims and lobbying behind the scenes.
Together we can expose their plans and bring public pressure to bear to stop this happening.
Thanks
Hilary
