"One of Tasmania’s last and most beautiful areas of wilderness is about to be subjected to nine “Pilbara-style” open cut mines -- and if the mining companies have their way, the government won’t even consider the potentially devastating environmental impact of the mines before deciding to approve. Tony Burke can stop this if he grants national heritage status immediately." ... read more

A GIPPSLAND abattoir has been shut by state authorities following a shocking video of alleged animal cruelty.

PrimeSafe ordered the immediate closure of LE Giles abattoir in Trafalgar after a video of the alleged cruelty to pigs being processed in the facility was provided to them by Animals Australia.

It is understood the video shows abattoir workers sticking electric stun prods used to stun animals before they are slaughtered into the eyes and noses of the animals.

PrimeSafe chief executive Brian Casey told the Herald Sun it was his intention to close the abattoir permanently

“I am appalled by the treatment of animals shown in the video footage,” he said.

Meet Lucy

Factory farmed pigLucy has the cogntive capacity of a 3 year old child. But she is not a human toddler. She can learn tricks and will wag her tail when excited. But her life is nothing like a pet dog's. Lucy is locked in a tiny metal crate so small she cannot even turn around for months at a time. She has endured 'surgical' procedures without any pain relief.

If Lucy were born a human child, or even a dog, this would be illegal. But Lucy is one of hundreds of thousands of mother pigs trapped in Australian factory farms — her fate is to produce as many piglets as her body will allow before she can no longer physically cope and she too becomes a product on supermarket shelves.

Behind closed doors pigs like Lucy suffer in silence. But this Christmas — during the peak time of production for factory farmed hams — we are breaking that silence. When this powerful radio ad goes to air next week, Lucy's voice will ring out across the country — reminding shoppers that they have the power to vote against cruelty by refusing to buy cruel products.

Animals Australia's factory farming ads are getting results. Last year our ad campaigns underpinned the pork industry's decision to phase out sow crates by 2017. But while most pork, bacon and ham sold in Australia is still factory farmed, our work to expose this cruel industry must continue.
