Call Nike Now!
July 24, 2007

Nike continues sponsoring Falcons' quarterback Michael Vick, even though he faces federal felony dogfighting charges. Witnesses say he and associates cruelly killed dogs who didn't show enough "gameness." Nike stopped plans to roll out a new line of Vick shoes, but that's just a feeble punt, since they continue selling other Vick shoes. He is a completely unsuitable role model, and a terrible reflection on Nike as a responsible company.

Please take a moment to call Nike USA Consumer Services at 1-800-344-6453. When the recorded message mentions option 5 "for all other questions," press 5 to get the comment line. You may need to wait a few minutes to leave a message due to the high volume of calls on this issue. Add your voice to others calling on Nike to stop sponsoring Michael Vick!
I called today and they said it was a 20 minute wait time. It was only 2 MINUTES so PLEASE CALL!!!!!

Paws and reflect before giving kittens as Christmas gifts this year
Caroline Marcus
December 3, 2006

THEY may be cute and adorable, but these kittens face the same tragic future as hundreds of unwanted cats dumped in Sydney during summer.

The Cat Protection Society of NSW receives an influx of kittens between October and March, the warmer months of the year when cats tend to breed.

Much of this was because of uneducated owners, unaware that cats as young as five months old could become pregnant, society chief executive Kristina Vesk said.

Cats tend to give birth to litters of three or four.

The shelter is already full this year, with 141 animals in its cattery and farmed out to temporary foster-care homes. That includes 98 kittens.

The charity has been forced to put down a number of cats because it receives more each day than it can find homes for.

There were hundreds of others that were not being taken to shelters and left to survive in the wild or die, Ms Vesk said.

Last week, a woman brought in a cat that she had bought at a pet shop, but had not had desexed.

The cat soon had four kittens and the owner decided she did not want the mother or the litter.

"We're not talking about last season's lipstick shade; these are five living creatures," Ms Vesk said.

"Don't leave it too late, thinking, 'I'll just wait until it gets a bit older.' Before you know it, that cat can have kittens."

She urged people to think carefully before making the commitment to adopt or buy a kitten, particularly as a Christmas gift.

"A kitten is not a toy. It's an animal that needs ongoing care and nurturing. It's a long-term relationship - up to 20 years."

Cats should be desexed when they are between eight and 12 weeks old, microchipped, treated for fleas and worms, vaccinated and regularly checked for parasites.

Owners should ensure their cats do not roam at night because they are a threat to wildlife.

I want a new home.... can you help me?  I am a male Pekinese - only 2 years old and a handsome little tyke if I do say so myself ! I have been neutered and UTD on all my shots. I have Revolution for my heartworm and flea prevention EVERY MONTH ! I do have special needs though.. PLEASE please PLEASE do not let that stop you from considering me as a new loving companion.
I really am the man of your dreams I promise I am (wink wink). I will be there for you when you come home to shower you with kisses and cuddles and show you how truly special you are to me. I will lick away your tears when you have had a rought day and I always promise to smile and laugh with you when you giggle and feel wonderful inside.
I have been with children, but would prefer an older kid home. I am a Peke so I have a long back and need to be careful jumping and horsing. I do need grooming OHH do I ! With my seizures under control (with my daily meds) I am actually seizure free right now, but I love ot be groomed and it is better for me to have my coat short. This can be costly you know? It is about 35 to 45 dollars per 8/10 weeks. If I do not get the grooming and my hair grows longer it is more weight for my body to carry and if I get mats (knots from not being brushed) it can hurt me really bad.. so I really would like it short even in winter. I stay pretty warm, because I only go out and do my business and want to come back and watch TV with you to play tug a war!!
I really have to tell you these things up front. I do not want any hidden surprises ya know, so I must confess to a few other of my faults.. *(which I will work on as long as you love me) I am learning the potty training stuff.. well marking actually.
Since I was JUST neutered, I do want to make sure every thing is "mine mine mine" - I am working it though.. and it is a very small thing to consider helping me wiht, after all I can AND WILL give to you for many years to come. I am very intelligent and listen to everything people say to me. I want to be the best man I can be.
I had an incident with a child as well. See listen I didnt get arrest it WAS this guys fault ya know?I was tied outside like I was everyday (rain, snow and hot sun) and would bark and cry for someone to pet me. The kids looked so sweet and had such fun throw things to each other and laughing away. I just wanted them to come over and KISS ME or throw me a Ball !! I cried and jumped around for him to see me and all he did was kick and kick me, then told his friends to do the same, and I decided enough was a enough and I wanted him to leave me alone.. so I bite his hand. You can ask my vet- the report clearly states I was being abused - this is why I came in to rescue.
I live with four children now, ages 12, 10, 8 and 6 and they all LOVE AND ADORE ME !!!! I am treated like the prince I am (ahhhaha yeah right) and I give them kisses- ohhhH yes I do ! Ask thewm how much I love to play with toys and chase them around. They are dog friendly kind of kids and slowly showed me how much they did care and want me happy. I also live with other dogs, cats, (i love kittens shHHHhhh some men do you know), some rabbits, and well I get along fine with them all.
If you have a nice loving home without smoke or mean people- read below to see how to help me with my new home.
Please contact my foster momma at keepuspurring@aol.com if you want to get some more information and an application ! You can see photos of me in the albums tomorrow!

PETITION FOR THE RELEASE OF RHESUS MONKEYS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CONNECTICUT AND FOR THE PERMANENT ABOLITION OF NONHUMAN PRIMATE RESEARCH AT ALL UNIVERSITY-AFFILIATED FACILITIES

View Current Signatures   -   Sign the Petition

To:  University of Connecticut Administration

As concerned individuals with an important stake in the reputation of the university, we demand an immediate end to the practice of experimenting on nonhuman primates as part of the University of Connecticut’s research program. The experiments are not only cruel to animals; they also discourage advancements in the search for humane alternatives by continuing introduce animal models as our defaults for the study of human anatomy and physiology. These animal models have marked limitations and the absence of cures for cancer, AIDS and Alzheimer’s after decades of research on nonhuman animals serve as a testament to that. However, this research has provided us with spectacular insights into the social life and intellect of nonhuman primates with special attention being placed on the similarities these animals have to human beings.

Rhesus monkeys are highly intelligent, sensitive and social beings with physiological and psychological needs as complex as our own. Research has stated that there is a “close evolutionary relationship” between us and rhesus monkeys and that our DNA differs by only 2%. They exhibit abstract thinking and mathematical skills. This is an astonishing revelation and one that needs to be given considerable thought. If these animals are so similar to humans we need to reevaluate our relationship with them, in this case their non-consentual use for invasive, harmful research. Confining primates to laboratory cages, denying them their freedom, proper environmental stimulation, complex social interaction and deliberately subjecting them to systematic pain and suffering in experimental procedures is morally unjustifiable.

We live in an age of astonishing technology. Computerized alternatives and magnetic imaging are opening the door to a new world of research possibilities. These alternatives are cheaper, more effective, and more humane. In the case of Dr. Waitzman’s research with rhesus monkeys, magnetic brain imaging (that can measure the activity of single cells) and non-invasive eye tracking on fully consenting human participants should be considered to replace the methods currently being used at the UCHC (which include drilling holes into the monkeys’ skulls and intentionally inflicting brain damage). Furthermore, research has shown that restraining nonhuman primates during research procedures causes them great distress and significantly confounds the neurological data we collect from them. With these factors in mind, there is no longer any justification for using these innocent animals for our own ends.

Dr. Waitzman’s protocol expires on March 31, 2006 at which time we are requesting that these rhesus monkeys be rehabilitated and relocated to an accredited sanctuary that is mutually agreed upon between the UCONN Animal Rights Collective and the University administration. Furthermore, we request that a permanent moratorium be placed on the use of nonhuman primates in all biomedical research at all University-affiliated facilities.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned

Letters: Cat deaths deal families sorrow

In the past six months, five cats have been killed in our little
cul-de-sac. Two — Pierre and Luna — lived next door. Three were part
of my family. Smeagol and Melvin were brothers, born in my home about
a year and a half ago. I helped their mother give birth to them.
Smeagol, Pierre and Luna died in June from antifreeze poisoning, all
within two days of each other.

On New Year's Day, Melvin had to be euthanized. His kidneys were
shutting down, and he was having violent seizures, again due to
ingesting antifreeze.

On the advice of our vet, we contacted animal control. Our vet and the
animal control officers all felt that the circumstances were
suspicious and that the chances of this being an accident were slim.

And then Saturday morning — not even a week after Melvin's death —
Rowan, my sweet and beautiful barn kitty, was found with his back
broken. Our vet concluded that his injury was not typical of being hit
by a car, but rather of being forcefully struck with a blunt object.

I want so much to believe in coincidence, in accident. To think that
someone would commit these acts intentionally is mind-blowing and
heart-wrenching. These animals were dear friends to many people. They
were loving, intuitive and a tremendous source of comfort to those who
loved them in return. Their deaths were painful and violent. They will
be deeply missed.

Please, if you have any information about anyone intentionally harming
animals, contact animal control immediately. Remember, those who harm
animals likely harm humans, too.

By Dennis Fetko, Ph.D.
Halifax Humane Society Newsletter

I'm familiar with hundreds of dog breeds, but what's an outside dog? Unless you're medically intolerant of the dog (and therefore can't take care of him in a medical emergency, so you shouldn't have the dog anyway), making a dog stay outside is a costly waste. If he's for protection, what do you think I want to steal - your lawn? When you leave, do you put your valuables and your kids out in your yard? Just what is the dog protecting out there?  Most dogs kept outside cause far more nuisance complaints from barking and escaping than any deterrent to intrusion. Such complaints cause teasing, antagonism, release and poisoning. With your dog a helpless victim, it's no
laughing matter.

If I'm a crook and your dog is out, your fence protects ME, not your possessions or your dog. If I just open the gate, 9 out of 10 dogs will run off! I can safely shoot, stab, spear, poison, snare, strangle them, or dart through the fence and you just lost your dog AND everything I steal!

If he's tied up and I keep out of reach, he's useless. He'll bark, but outside dogs bark so much, they're usually ignored. But let a dog hit the other side of a door or window I'm breaking into, and I'm GONE! I can't hurt the dog until he can hurt me, and nothing you own is worth my arm. Deterrence is effective
protection.

Protection and aggression are not the same. Protection is defensive, reactive, often passive, and threatens or injures no one. Aggression is active, harmful and offensive, threatens all and benefits none. Yard dogs often develop far more aggression than protectivity because everyone who passes by or enters has already violated the territory that dog has marked dozens of times a day for years. That's not protection, it's not desirable and it overlooks two facts of life today:

First, property owners have implied social contracts with others in the community. Letter carriers, paper boys, delivery people, law enforcement, emergency medical personnel, meter readers and others are allowed near and at times on your property without your specific permission. And sure that ten-year-old was not supposed to jump your fence after his Frisbee; but neither you nor your dog are allowed to cause him injury if he does. Imagine this: A neighbor looks into your yard or window and sees you, your wife or child laying on the floor in a pool of blood. They call
9-1-1 and your dog prevents paramedics from assisting! Should they shoot your dog or just let you die?

Great choice.

Second, even if the intruder is a criminal, few places allow you or your dog to cause physical injury to prevent property loss. Convicted felons have sued the dog's owner from jail and won more in the suit than they ever could  have stolen!

Appalling? True.

And don't be foolish enough to believe your
homeowner's insurance will cover the loss. Now you see
why many feel that an outside dog is a no-brainer.

The more a dog is outdoors, the less behavioral
control you have. It's easier to solve four or five
indoor problems than one outdoor problem. The reason
is valid and simple: The more you control the stimuli
that reaches your dog, the more you control the
responses. You've got a lot more control over your
living room than you do over your entire county! When
your dog is bored, but teased by every dog, cat, bird,
squirrel, motorcycle, paperboy, airplane, firecracker
and backfiring truck in the county, OF COURSE he'll
dig, chew, and bark.

Would you sit still all day everyday? Do you want
unnecessary medical and parasite fees, especially as
the dog ages?

When a dog is alone indoors, you are still 30% there
because your scent and things he associates with you,
constantly remind the dog of you and your training.
When he's out, your dog is alone whether you're home
or not. Do you really expect him to keep YOU in mind
while the entire world teases, distracts and
stimulates him?

The media is full of stories about the family dog
saving everyone's life during a fire. How many people,
including children, would be dead today if those dogs
were kept outside? SURE - you ALWAYS get up to
investigate every
time your yard dog barks. And I've got this bridge.

An outdoor dog has an address, not a home. Dogs offer
real value as companion animals. Stop behavior
problems and start enjoying real protection and
companionship. Bring your dogs inside.

The dog pictured above -CeeJay- is one it took us over 3 years to get in to a safe and loving home! When you love and care for the dog patience and presistance WILL get them off the chain and in safe. I am enclosing a letter I wrote as well as a letter I recieved through founder of Dogs Deserve Better, Tammy Grimes.
PLEASE even if you are a supporter of PETA, visit the site and read the mission. This is truly not a good program for these poor dogs!!!
here is the site:

-----------------
Subject: Dogs Deserve Better asks Peta to Stop Building Doghouses!

Please crosspost and write a letter to Peta at info@peta.org to ask
them to stop this campaign to build doghouses and put their efforts and
money into STOPPING chaining instead! Thanks, Tammy
------
 Dear Ingrid and Peta,

I am writing you today to urge you to STOP YOUR PROGRAM TO SPONSOR
DOGHOUSES. This program harms not only your own anti-chaining
campaign, but also Dogs Deserve Better's anti-chaining efforts in
three ways:

 1. Providing a doghouse enables the behavior.

You are enabling people who chain their dogs to continue this
behavior, not only for this dog, but also for future dogs. If they
have a nice doghouse, but this dog dies, nothing will stop them from
getting another dog and throwing it out at the new shiny doghouse.
"After all, it would be a shame to waste it."

 2. You are delivering mixed messages.

You tell them on one hand it is not ok to chain their dog, but then
you provide them a new doghouse with which to continue to do so.
You've in essence given them your 'seal of approval' to keep their dog
outside. They now freely ignore any other message you give them.

 3. You are now an active participant in any harm that may come to a
child while this dog lives chained to the doghouse you've provided.

Children die as a result of chained dogs. Do not be a party to this!
See this link for photos of one of the recent 'lucky ones' who escaped
with his life.
 http://www.mothersagainstdogchaining.org/dolanmiller.html

 DO WE AS ANIMAL ADVOCATES:

Buy bigger gestation crates for the pig farmers (It would give the
pigs 6 more inches living space)?
Buy new cages for the puppy millers (Their old cage was rusty)?
Buy puppies from pet stores (it's not their fault they were born in a
mill)?

NO? Why would we then provide this for dog chainers?

We should instead be using ALL our resources to fight to:

 1. Change and enforce laws.
In most areas laws already exist that shelter must be provided. Force
them to provide the dog with a house if they won't bring it in; don't
do it for them!

 2. Educate society.
We must continue the unrelenting education, standing against this
behavior; not enabling it.

 3. Rescue and rehabilitate.
Many people who refuse to give up dogs to rescue later change their
minds. Don't provide them a house and shut this door for the dog
forever. A dog longs for so much more than a doghouse; he longs for
and deserves love and a family.

We ask you today to stop this program. Stop the enabling, and put your
efforts into the real solution—STOPPING THE CHAINING!

Dear Ingrid and PETA,
I am writing as a member (sadly) and really want to address this program that is sponsoring the dog houses! I have saved several dogs from chains and dirty rotten doghouses. They live indoors now, not in new dog houses.
Yes, it can be difficult to get people to actually care for their animals they asked to be responsible for. Still I sought help with agencies that work to prevent cruelty to animals and the people were fined or and the dogs removed from the hell of life on a chain.
I cannot understand why you would allow PETA to contradict the purpose of CARING for animals, Preventing neglect and abuse - by having a program to Promote chaining of dogs, and neglecting them emotionally!
I hope this does not mean that NOW you will give nice new veal crates or bird cages to the factory farmers so they can be clean, dry and safe as well? This action does not corespond with your purpose what so ever.
PLEASE - Use this time, page, and energy to help educate people, enforce laws, get stronger ones on the books, report and encourage others to report abuse and neglect of chained dogs.  Just please do not allow and support these people as they continue the cruel act of leaving these dogs out.
Lets NOT ignore -  the slow deaths these dogs endure year after year of being left there to die. They deserve a loving safe home, not confinement to chains to die like criminals.
Sincerely,
Dayle Coutu
