Over 20 horses poisoned with oleander San Diego, CA (U Incident Date: Wednesday, Jul 29, 2009 County: San Diego Disposition: Open Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help! More than 20 horses became ill when they were intentionally poisoned with toxic leaves in southern California this week, authorities said Friday. The horses were given oleander bush leaves between Wednesday night and early Thursday morning at their ranch in San Diego, the county sheriff's department said in a news release. The leaves were found in the stalls in the morning by employees arriving to work, according to officials. "We found bits and pieces of carrots and chopped up apples along with multiple leaves," ranch owner Bill Tomin told CNN television affiliate KFMB. "This is horrible, it's scary why would someone do such a thing," he said. "If they were angry with me, burn my house down, slash my tires, confront me." An exact number of horses sickened was unclear, but officials believe they were more than 20. The animals, whose prognosis was not known, were under the care of veterinarians. Poisoned Horses Update; One Still Critical by: Kimberly S. Brown, Editor August 02 2009, Article # 14641 Print Email Add to Favorites RSS ShareThis Debbie Tomin, co-owner with her husband, Bill, of Rockridge Farm in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., told TheHorse.com late Sunday morning that "23 horses were fed the poisonous concoction (of apples, carrots, and oleander leaves). "All the ones in the barn and three outside (were fed the dangerous mixture)," she said of the Saddlebreds at their farm. "We brought two home from the hospital yesterday (that had been poisoned), but one is still in critical condition. "All the horses will have a blood test on Monday to see if their heart muscles have been affected," she said. "Once cleared, they can go back to work. "We have no suspects, no disgruntled employees or clients," Tomin said. "Maybe they hit the wrong barn?" A video survelience system will be installed on Monday, she said. If you have any information that might lead the Tomins to finding out who deliberately tried to poison their horses, please e-mail rsfsickhorses@gmail.com.
