The drive to bring impeachment into a national discussion really seems to have taken a step forward in the last week. I was shocked to see Senator Hagel bring up impeachment several weeks ago but even more shocked that I saw no mention of a Republican Senator considering the impeachment alternative against a president of his own party when there has been so little discussion of this issue in the mainstream media to date. It's as though he was begging for the discussion to begin...and it fell silent.

I've witnessed John Murtha bring it up to deaf ears several times and then last week, Congressman Kucinich actually introduced a resolution to the house. I watched the evening news shows and saw nothing about it. The next day, I asked my co-workers if they had seen anything and they looked at me as though I was from another planet.

So, this morning, I opened my email to find one encouraging me to call and thank Murtha for his effort since he tried to bring impeachment into the discussion once again the last week. There was also a link and a request that I follow it to request that polling companies start asking the questions about impeachment. It seemed like the logical thing to do since the mainstream (liberal ) media has been totally ignoring it. So...I did and thought it wouldn't hurt to share my letter here.

It is dumbfounding that so many people are discussing the need to consider impeachment and yet the major media outlets seem oblivious to the notion. On April 29th, Bob Schieffer (CBS News-Face the Nation) appeared shocked to hear John Murtha discussing the fact that impeachment of George Bush is an option - even though Mr. Murtha has brought this up several times in the past and it was publicly aired.

Shortly after that discussion, Roger Simon of politico.com, the site that several of the networks have advertised as 'the' place to find out what's happening in politics, appeared on the show and when asked about the '
revelation' that Murtha had brought up impeachment, Mr. Simon discharged the idea saying that an impeachment would only leave Mr. Cheney in the Whitehouse. Despite the claim that his site new 'everything', he failed to even mention that Congressman Kucinich had just introduced articles of impeachment against Mr. Cheney (HR 333) earlier this week....another event that as hardly touched by the mainstream media.

When else has there been active, serious discussion of impeaching both a president and vice-president in the history of this country and yet the mainstream media doesn't feel this is news? Of course it is and those taking polls should be soliciting the desires of the populace since the media seems intent on serving only those controlling the purse strings.

(end of letter)

Even if the US somehow managed to change the description of a 'win' in Iraq to something that it can mark this blunder up as a 'victory' in the minds of some, if the leaders that drug us into this with their lies and manipulation are allowed to walk away without answering to their crimes and the shame they have brought upon this country, what is to prevent some other egotistical personality from doing the same thing in the future? We need to say 'This is wrong and we don't want it done in our name' very publicly. Please follow this link and add your comments.

*update* Shortly after I posted this, I just happened to catch Murtha on NBC news. The interview began with discussion about Ex-CIA director Tenet's book but it quickly turned to Murtha's mention of impeachment the day before. Just maybe they are feeling the pressure to actually give this the attention it deserves.  ....keep up the pressure...

" Lies got us into this war. Only the truth will get us out.” The Best War Ever, by the best-selling authors of Weapons of Mass Deception, is a vital account of why America is losing in Iraq and the Middle East. We have met the enemy—and it's our own PR machine. One of the most tragic consequences of the Bush administration's reliance on spin, the authors argue, is its disdain for realistic planning. Repeatedly, when faced with predictions of problems, policymakers dismissed the warnings of Iraq experts, choosing instead to promulgate their own version of the war through conservative media outlets and PR campaigns. And as the book reveals, they're still doing it—as the people who sold us the war in Iraq are now trying to sell an expansion into Syria and Iran.

There were two news stories about the NSA this week but you would hardly know that if you get your news from the major media outlets. The second story did receive some time from the independent sources but appears to not be resonating with many people. This is leaving me somewhat confused and disappointed. Perhaps I'm reading more into the story than is there

The story about phone records being turned over to the NSA is not new. The Electronic Frontier Foundation filed their suit against ATT several months ago concerning this very issue. The only news is that ATT is not the only company involved. The disclosure that the only information provided to the NSA was the numbers being called and no personal information seems to have given sufficient comfort to people that are rightly concerned about fighting terrorism. Of course, this administration has never lied to it's constituents...

This is why the 'other' story should have been the headliner. The Justice Department conceded that it was unable to complete a requested investigation of itself and the activities of the NSA because the NSA refused to grant sufficient security clearances to the Justice Department lawyers conducting the investigation. Why are people not bothered by this?

Under the leadership of Mr. Gonzalez, one of the architects of President's Bush spying and torture campaigns, the idea that the Justice Department is investigating itself is somewhat laughable to begin with. However, assuming that there still are some free-thinking, righteous people remaining in the Justice Department, they can not possibly do their job if not provided the proper tools. Only the NSA could have done this. The NSA operates in the shadows, apparently answering to nobody except this administration as they have chosen to go around any laws that do not fit into their mission...and we sit.

If you're still not bothered by this, consider the undisputed fact that the information being collected is not only being used to fight the terrorism you might associate with 9-11. Terrorism has a broad definition and the tools being used by this administration are also being used to intimidate an unknown number of people, U.S. citizens who simply have different political views than this administration, especially where environmental conservation clashes with corporate greed.

The citizens of the U.S. are missing the point and by turning a blind eye, we are getting exactly what we deserve.
