It slipped up on me. I hadn't marked today on the calendar because this is just one of those days one doesn't forget - or necessarily look forward to.

Today marked the anniversary of the birth of my late step-father. He was not a healthy man and thus saw his departure before he could have possibly accomplished all he had hoped and before he saw the majority of his dreams become reality. He died three years ago at a relatively young age of 67 after being forced into early retirement after a massive heart attack.

Broken relationships, family issues and just keeping up with life in general had him from living his dreams. I recall hoping at the time that I would have many more days than he to explore life and weave my way through the maze. However, time flies fast and the reality is that hardly anybody ever marks everything off their list. Even an additional 30 or 40 years for my step-dad, a period of time I once thought to be infinite, would not have been enough.

We never have enough time so we have to pick and choose what is important and then, with a lot of effort and some luck, we can attain some of our goals. The rest will have to be left to somebody else. That is easy enough. The difficult part is determining what is really important...
