The Tragic Parody of the Annual Presidential Turkey Pardon
Nation spares one life while taking tens of millions of others on Thanksgiving

Every Thanksgiving, at a White House ceremony surrounded by much media fanfare, the President of the United States grants a "pardon" to a turkey. Reflecting our grand democratic tradition, people from around the nation vote on the government's website for what they think the turkey's name should be. After posing for staged photo-ops, the lucky turkey gets to live out a natural lifespan at a Virginia petting zoo. At the same time, all over America, tens of millions of turkeys will already be cooking in ovens awaiting the grand feast.

Legend has it that Abraham Lincoln started the presidential turkey pardoning custom in the 1860s by allowing his son Tad's "pet" turkey to live one Thanksgiving day. Since then, this gesture of historical kindness has evolved into a strange ritual in which the country lightheartedly hails the saving of one turkey only to devour millions of others. Symbolically, the pardon acts as a reverse sacrifice: the generosity of spirit we have shown a single bird enables people to dissociate themselves from their complicity in mass murder.

To "pardon" a turkey has a particularly apt ring to it, given what a pardon means for human prisoners who have been accused of some crime. Turkeys are indeed incarcerated on factory farms, awaiting a death sentence. The difference is that turkeys have committed no crimes: in fact, humankind is guilty of unspeakable atrocities against turkeys, most of it government-sanctioned.

These birds deserve compassion, not punishment. They are innocent victims who love life and deserve to live it as much as anyone else. In that sense, a supposed "pardon" granted by our nation's leader to a single turkey appears not as an act of mercy, but rather a disingenuous attempt to officially justify senseless slaughter in the name of an American tradition.

- Celebrate Thanksgiving by sharing a healthy vegan meal with loved ones. Try Compassionate Cooks' special Thanksgiving recipes for such delicious holiday fare as harvest-stuffed acorn squash, golden mushroom gravy, pumpkin bread and hot mulled cider. Include a Tofurky or new Garden Protein vegan turkey from the deli case at Whole Foods Market, and even your meat-eating guests will be astounded.

- If your local newspaper runs a story about the presidential turkey pardon, write a letter to the editor explaining that while one turkey may live, 45 million others needlessly die for people's Thanksgiving celebrations.

- Read about and see video footage from a new undercover investigation by Compassion Over Killing (COK) of a North Carolina turkey hatchery.
