I'm excited to share with you a great victory in our campaign to end the use of animals in pediatrics residency programs! Previously, an incision was made between rabbits' ribs and a plastic tube inserted into their chest cavities. The rabbits were then killed. Ferrets were likely to experience tracheal bleeding and bruising—and possibly even death—when plastic tubes were shoved down their throats repeatedly.

The chair of the pediatrics department at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSC-SA) has confirmed that the school is no longer using rabbits and ferrets in training courses.

It takes a lot of work to win campaigns like this one. Here's what goes on behind the scenes:

• Since last September, we repeatedly contacted key stakeholders at UTHSC-SA.
• When nothing changed, we filed public records requests to force the school to disclose information about its animal use that it wouldn't have otherwise provided us.
• PCRM staff examined the documents the school provided and contacted faculty again with the intention of mounting more pressure on them to change. That's when the school informed us that it had discontinued animal use since our first efforts there began.
