"The animals on this page are available only to adopters in the County, and within the Metro DC/Northern Virginia area; if in doubt about whether we adopt to your location within this area, please call or email for verification."
Kiwi (Princess) is a wondrous, quizzical brown tabby girl, who was formerly located at the MCHS Private Rescue before that humane society no-kill shelter was permanently closed.
Kiwi was surrendered back to the county animal shelter almost immediately by her first-time pet owner. He said that she suffered diarrhea, but she has displayed no symptoms since returning to the shelter.
At the Private Rescue, she curled up in her little fort, a cubbyhole in the carpeted kitty condo. When I reached in to pet her, she purred and purred. If I coaxed her to leave her little kitty cabin, she first peeked her bright green eyes above the trap door, and tried to lure me back in. She is kind of wiggly when you pick her up and set her on your lap, only because she is so curious to explore about everything around her.
Kiwi was a lively character, who would suddenly appear among the other dozen cats in Private Rescue Cat Room 1. She was not shy at all, and strutted confidently among the many vigorous and assertive cats. Somehow, she just had a fascination with playing in her cubbyhole.
Kiwi is in excellent health, with a firm, roly-poly build, broad face, and powerful legs. She still likes to curl up at the rear of her cage at the county animal shelter. She purred like mad when I reached in and pet her, but when I tried to call her to the front of the cage, wiggling my fingers and urging her out, she just rolled to her side, again and again, until she was completely upside-down with her paws up in the air, flirtatiously demanding that I should come in after her.
She sat on a fleece pillow for a visitor at a Saturday Cat Adoption Open House, circling round and round and taking in the sights. When she finally returned to her cage, she contentedly curled up at the back of the cage, peering happily out through eyes almost closed, and soon drifted off to blissful sleep.
From time to time I let Kiwi out from her cage, and set her down, either on a towel in my lap, or on a towel in her own chair. She looks around her with some interest, obviously appalled to discover all the other cats peering out from their cages. It’s usually not long, however, before she concludes that she has surely got better fish to fry.
Steadily, she tries to make her way to the edge of the chair, millimeter by millimeter, ever faithful that if she makes no sudden movements, I will not notice she is making good her escape.
Finally, when she has wiggled as far to the edge of her seat as she can, she folds her ears back slightly, and flattens her great, muscular body like some wild, duck-billed platypussy. Then, chock full of mischief, she flows like water out of my grip, and onto the concrete shelter floor, where she is in no way permitted to stroll. So swift and silent is her descent, that I have had to pin her neck scruff to prevent her escape, even though I was watching like a hawk from about eight inches away.
This nutty cat is all fun, 100 percent, and whoever makes her the gift of a happy, loving home, will never regret it.
If you can give Kiwi the life she deserves, visit the Montgomery County Humane Society, or call (240) 773-5960 Option 2 for more information.
Please Donate Fluffy Fleece Beds for Shelter Cats!
One thing I’ve noticed while volunteering at my local ‘No-Kill’ shelters is, those cats love soft, cushy, sheepskin fleece pet beds! They just curl up in them, and purr and purr and purr!
The other thing I’ve noticed is, there aren’t always enough clean cat beds to go around—and some of the cat beds on hand were mighty worn out, and not so fluffy. Our local shelters’ great front-loading industrial washers and dryers do a wonderful job disinfecting used fabrics, but over time, the old beds suffered a bit of a pounding. All the cat beds bought recently still look great, but the ones that are some years old were flattened and dismal. They belonged in the dumpster!
This 7-year-old shelter cat loves to curl up in a fleece bed on the top storey of her favorite cat tree. The shelter staff nicknamed her “Ducky,” because her short, explosive meow sounds like a quacking duck.
That’s why I’m collecting donations for Fluffy Fleece Beds for Shelter Cats! I’ve bought them two myself, so far, but I need to buy the little guys cardboard scratching disks, too, as well as feathered cat teasers. I can’t seem to put a dent in the need for fresh, new fleece beds!
Already, the wonderful members of Care2 have donated $125 to obtain 11 fleece faux sheepskin cat beds, and one deep-walled luxury cat bed with reversible mattress, to the grateful and deserving cats of our hard-working animal shelter! All of the raggedy, flattened old beds have been thrown out, and our kitties are curled up in their warm, comfortable beds, dreaming of (in alphabetical order):
►Jorge R.-B.
►Joy J.
►L.R.A. A.
►Marsha R.
►Stephanie K. H.
►Susan F.
►Teresa D.
►Terrie W.
Just click the “Donate” button, and you can help provide soft, fleecy bliss to our purry little imps! These beds are available here for $9.99 apiece, plus state sales tax, but I am seeking donations of any amount. Any donations that add up to an odd amount, I will provide the necessary funds to complete the purchase. (The product illustration is blue-colored, but I actually buy pink ones—it’s more of a cat color.)
These donations will go specifically to the two “No-Kill” shelters where I volunteer here in the National Capital region. Serving mostly adult or senior cats, these nonprofit organizations have been saving animals for over 50 years.
Alternatively, you can buy cat beds for your own local county, municipal, or nonprofit shelters (particularly if you want a tax deduction).
These snugglesome beds are available at numerous retail outlets—one example is the PetSmart item, which can be found at http://tinyurl.com/petsmart3088187. To obtain a receipt for tax purposes, it would probably be best to deliver such items to the shelter in person; but if you don’t need the deduction, you could just as easily ship them directly to your favorite shelter, as a gift—and why not?
The kitties and I would be so grateful if you could give us a helping hand! . . . I’ll get back to you, to let you know how we did, and whether the thunderous kitty purrs have caused any structural damage.

The SPCA got a search warrant after a seven-month undercover investigation in which former Butler County humane officer Deborah Urmann, who worked for Bruno once a week as a volunteer, videotaped the operations using a button camera purchased over the Internet, officials said. “She claims she's a no-kill shelter, but really she's a slow-kill shelter,” Urmann said. About 100 cats were living in a building that looked like a construction trailer. It was strewn with blood and feces and had two doors that enabled the cats to go out into a fenced area. Dozens of cats lived with Bruno in her ranch-style home, too, PSPCA Director Howard Nelson said. “You couldn't even breathe because of the ammonia,” Nelson said, referring to the stench of cat urine.—AP

Notes: I am looking for a home for three all-white feral cats of a colony I have been working with for three years. I have managed to find homes from more than 20 of their children/siblings and am looking for a way to place these remaining three in loving homes. Two of the "white girls" or "ladies" (as I like to call them) can be domesticated. They currently talk to me, wait at my front gate (and sometimes my door) and do what I call "drive bys" where they run real fast past my legs and swipe me. They let me pet them in this fashion too. Of course they would be scared at first, but two of them would come around if given time and patience. The other, however, might not come around. All three of the white girls are spayed. I got that done a long time ago. The reason I am desperate to find them placement is that their habitat is about to be torn down (an old abandoned house) and construction will begin. Plus, I don't know if I will continue to live in the area for much longer. If you think you can give a loving home to one or all of my ladies, please contact me at the email address provided. Of course all vetting will be done and all costs associated with travel will be provided for.

I would like to thank Barb Gee, an Animal Welfare League of Montgomery County foster in East Village, for agreeing to take on the little orange kitten I caught, as described in the following, hair-raising adventure.
While I was returning from a doctor's appointment in Reston, I saw an orange tabby male kitten about 8-12 weeks old, running through the intersection of New Dominion Parkway and Town Center Parkway, Reston, Virginia (http://tinyurl.com/29h7jk). He continued running east down the middle of New Dominion Parkway--a six-lane divided highway--in moderate traffic.
I turned onto New Dominion Parkway and parked my car in the highway with my emergency flashers. I approached the cat on the lawn beside a parking garage. He ran toward some trees. I continued to approach and he jumped a retaining wall into the parking garage. He was crying loudly.
I climbed into the parking garage and tried to approach it, trilling and calling "kitty kitty." He continued crying but did not allow me to come closer than 15 feet. I got down on all fours to try to reassure it. He ran from under a car to a corner of the garage.
Some women entered the parking garage who had apparently also seen it, and one began to approach him on foot. He ran back under the car by the retaining wall. I tried to slowly approach it, blocking the path to the retaining wall. He then squeezed into a wall crevice between concrete slabs, and I was able to grab him by the scruff and pick him up. He was still crying, but did not claw or bite.
One of the women helped open my car and unzip the flexible cat carrier I always keep strapped to the rear seat lap belt. I put the kitten in the carrier, and she zipped him back up. Then I withdrew my hand and zipped him the rest of the way.
I provided her my email address and website, http://SeniorPetsProgram.org. She said she could not take him home, because she already has two adult cats. I said I am a volunteer for the Animal Welfare League of Montgomery County, and would see if the kitten could enter the new animal intake system. I told her to email me for updates.
I wanted to get the cat home immediately, to get him water, a litter box, and a little food if he wanted any. He appears to be healthy and is continuing to meow. At a later date I can return to put up "found" posters in the area, and on the Borders community bulletin board nearby.
I am tentatively calling him "Apollo," since he was racing down the highway in broad sunlight.
Apollo loves canned Sheba fish cat food, and was hungrily devouring canned IAMS chicken cat food when I left him this morning. He plays with a detached squirrel-tail toy from a cat teaser, rolling on his back and kicking it with his rear feet, and bats around a little cat ball. He peed in his covered litter carrier, then tried to cover it by pawing at the wall. Finally he got the hang of it, and is now very neat and tidy: a proper little pooper.
He still cries a good deal--even sometimes while he's eating. He chirps like a little bird when he tries to cry while he's purring.
The little fellow has been transferred to AWLMC Barb Gee, who will be taking him in for his first vet visit next week. The Fairfax County Animal Control department has also been notified of a found cat in their jurisdiction.
Our hardworking fosters deserve absolute gratitude and recognition for performing as kitty taxis, veterinary nurses, clean-up crews, adoption presenters, and a thousand-and-one other grueling, invisible duties each and every day of their never-ending commitment to ensure the well-being of every kitty who comes their way.
