Another successful Turkey Trot gave us one more reason to be grateful this Thanksgiving.  It was chilly when we headed out in the morning, only 60F.  So I bundled up with lots of layers.  By the time we reached the starting line, I had taken off my sweater, and left my mittens and hat in the car.  It was turning out to be a warm and sunny day.   The walk from the car to the starting line was the hardest part (not to mention the parking).  After that, my joints and muscles warmed up.  And once we'd gotten to the start on time, I knew there was no hurry.  Some people try to race.  But as I recalled from the last year, the "one mile gobbler" is more of a stroll.  People with baby buggies, or babes in arms, and dogs on leashes all just out to enjoy the day.  Although we stopped to take pictures a few places along the walk, we still made my personal goal of 30 minutes.  And one minute of that was ticking before we got up to the official starting line since we decided to hang back behind the big crowd.  It was the largest turnout ever for the Turkey Trot this year- more than 13,000 registered.  For photos of the race click here  http://www.care2.com/c2c/photos/view/213/156838437/Turkey_Trot/

Lots of fun and lots of money raised for charity.  I am still just so grateful to be walking again at all after breaking my foot.  It seemed to take forever to heal.  I'm still working on balance and strength and my speed isn't what it used to be.  But I'm happy to report that for the first week since September, walking doesn't hurt.  I don't think I'll take that for granted ever again

My most hated chore of all when I was growing up, was pulling weeds.  I thought it was some sort of terrible punishment.  I believed adults had children just so their kids could do such loathsome tasks for them.
Now I look at pulling weeds as a kind of  therapy.  Not only can I safely let out my aggression on the innocent weeds, but it's good for the physical body too.  Did you know that gardening can build muscle and bone mass the same as lifting weights?  This doesn't mean that I enjoy it anymore, or do it more often.  I still procrastinate until the weeds are so tall it's hard to see the flowers.
But what's the difference really?  Some weeds are actually quite beautiful.  And on my parched brown lawn, I'm happy to see any bit of green.  I don't pull the weeds or put "weed and seed" on those patches.  I just let them go.  But the flower beds and garden paths must be defended.  They are constantly in danger of being overtaken.  And so I must go on yanking out the only thing that grows without encouragement from me or nature.
