As some of you know, I am presently visiting a friend in Eugene, Oregon.  We spent a couple of days in Portland for Christmas, and naturally had to spend some time at Powell's bookstore!

If you're here in Oregon, you already know that the local economy is in terrible shape and there is a growing homeless population in Eugene and Portland. I'm writing this hoping that someone will step up and help one young woman I  encountered during my visit.

She looked about 18-20 years of age and was sitting on the ground with a few bags outside Powell's on Christmas Eve.  There was a young man with her.  They both looked clean, suggesting they had not been on the streets very long.  They both gave me the impression of being decent young people who were in unexpected trouble -- there was nothing to suggest drug abuse.  The young woman looked so humble and ashamed . . . I gave her some money, because being a visitor here, there was nothing else I could do.  The young man took the money and bought her a cookie.  Then I realized they hadn't eaten anything nourishing for a while, and I gave them a little more money, enough for them both to get at least one good meal that night.

We went back to Powell's on Christmas Day and she was still there, alone this time.  I'm out of cash and couldn't do anything more.  But I can't stop thinking about this girl.  It's so cold and windy and miserable here right now.

Is there anyone in Portland, or nearby, who could do something for this young woman?  I can't say for sure she's still camped outside of Powell's (the main store on Burnside), but I suspect she is either there or nearby.  I'm begging anyone at Care2 who has a spare room or some other way of helping this girl to step up and rescue her.  She's not safe out there on the streets, and like I said, I saw nothing to suggest she is an addict or would cause problems for someone who tried to help.  I didn't get her name . . . she had a light complexion, brown eyes, and brown hair, petite build.  She had a very large duffel bag (maybe an Army bag?) and some other small bags and was seated directly in front of the entrance to Powell's.  I think you could find her if you were willing to help.

My instincts tell me that she is really a good young person who just needs a helping hand.  If you can help, please go look for her.  Please.  And let me know what happens if you do.

Thanks so much.

I just heard about this Web site a little while ago after listening to one of my favorite shows on public radio, and wanted to share it:

The Campaign for Love and Forgiveness

This is NOT a religious organization!  Here's a little bit about what they're doing, from their site:

"Launched in 2006, the Campaign for Love & Forgiveness uses PBS documentaries, community activities, online resources, and networking opportunities to encourage reflection and conversation about how love and forgiveness can effect meaningful change in individuals and society. Through community conversations, the campaign aims to create a meaningful national dialogue that will bring about positive changes for individuals, their relationships, and their communities."

Check it out!

Hey, Everybody!

Just popping in to share this link with you.  I just ran across this Web site for "Delicious Living" magazine . . . it combines green living with creative cooking, and I was so excited!  I'm sure many of you here are already familiar with it, but I wanted to share it anyway.

Hi, Everybody!

For most of the last year, I have not had Internet access at home, so my time here at Care2 has been extremely limited.  But I'm back online at home, and trying to catch up with everybody.  I hope that no one has assumed that my silence was a personal slight -- it's just been really hard for me to spend any time here when I was limited to using the computers at the library, which only allow users 60 minutes a day (and that only if there's a computer available, which isn't always the case).

I'd love to hear from everybody & hear how you're doing and what you've been up to all this time -- please feel free to write me any time.

Really feels good to be back!!!

Love,
Dagaz

Hi, Everybody!

I haven't been able to get online much lately, but the other day, I had an idea & wondered if anyone here would be interested in helping me with it.  Now, I really don't know about this, but it occurred to me that food banks for the poor probably don't stock pet food (or other pet supplies like cat litter) -- I would imagine that they focus exclusively on human needs.  But when people are in need, for whatever reason, any animals they are responsible for will need assistance, too.

So my idea is first to do some research and find out whether food banks typically do or do not stock pet supplies, or accept donations of pet supplies.  If not, I'd like to see what we can do to encourage them to start.  If you'd like to help me with this, you could start by finding out about food banks in your local area or your state.  And maybe we could do some research about the pet-supply needs of people who depend on food banks.  And after all that, if there seems to be a real unmet need for pet foods, perhaps we could approach an organization like the Human Society of the United States and encourage them to start a campaign to get food banks to respond to that need.  Or maybe we'll end up starting an organization of our own to get pet supplies to people who need them and can't afford them.

Anybody interested?  Drop me a line here at Care2 if you want to participate or if you have any ideas.  Thanks!

Have a great weekend, everybody!

Just a quick note to let you all know that I'm still offline at home & relying on the library for Internet access for the time being.  Hope to be back soon!

Hi, Everybody --

I'm at the library checking my messages quickly because we're having technical problems at home.  Hopefully we'll be back online sometime over the weekend.  Miss you all!

Hello, Friends Old & New --

My fiance and I had something extremely disagreeable happen to us earlier this evening -- I don't want to go into details, but I would like to ask for your prayers and strong thoughts.  I'm more or less okay, and I believe the situation is stable for the time being, but I am shaken and very, very stressed.

What we both need right now, more than anything, is to calm down and recover our equilibrium so we can think clearly and get some things dealt with.  My fiance also has to get up for work at 3 AM, so I'm hoping he'll be able to get some decent sleep tonight.

And while I've got your attention, I also want to thank each one of you just for being my friends here at Care2.  There is something special about this community, and about each wonderful person who is a part of it.  Please know that I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to get to know each one of you, and you're often in my thoughts.

Love y'all!

Dear Friends:

For those who don't make it over to Care2's news site very often, I wanted to draw attention to this story I just submitted:

http://www.care2.com/news/member/166575488/418413

We hear about Canada's baby seal hunt a lot, but I'd never heard of this one before.

Hi, Everybody --

A few days ago, I signed a petition on The Petition Site titled, "Stop Dogs Being Used as Shark Bait" (http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/stop-dogs-being-used-as-shark-bait). Stories like this always hit me hard, and at first, I didn't question the accuracy of the claims presented in the petition description.

But the more I thought about it, the more I doubted whether this could actually be happening as described.  And sure enough, after doing just a little background research, I found good reason to suspect the story is at best seriously exaggerated, and possibly nothing more than a hoax.  Please see this article at the well-known "hoax buster" site Snopes.com:

http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/sharkbait.asp

I know when people start petitions, they're just trying to help, but it seems to me that this one wasn't researched thoroughly beforehand.  I'm not trying to start anything -- it's just that horrific stories of abuse are extremely difficult for me to hear, and if I'm going to hear them & then suffer the consequences (which, for me, include terrible nightmares and intense emotional pain), I should at least be reasonably sure that they're true.

I can't be the only person at Care2 who is very sensitive to tales of animal suffering, and it's on behalf of all of them that I am posting this and asking creators of petitions to be sure there's good reason to believe that a serious abuse is occurring BEFORE inflicting these horrible images on others.

Peace,
Dagaz
