NYF

Hello all! I'm writing this blog to spread the word about a great non-profit, NYF or Nepal Youth Foundation. Many of you may know about the situation in Nepal (among other areas), but for those who don't, I'll give you a brief run-down.
All too often children in Nepal (often girls, and as young as six) are sold into "indentured servitude" because their parents can't afford to keep them. However, that's not nearly the worst part. Often, these girls are taken far away from their families to live with strangers, to do what they believe to be physical work, and while that is sometimes the case, it is not uncommon for these little girls to be sold into brothels, where they are pimped out several times a night. (Did I mention these girls are between 6 and 12?)
What's more is the lie behind the term "indentured servitude." The families of these girls are mislead into believing that after a term, or set number of years, they will be reunited with their daughters (or sons). Unfortunately, after meals, rent for housing in the brothels, medical expenses to keep these girls alive, and other expenditures, their wages barely cover their expenses. Basically what I'm getting at is that these girls are charged to live in the brothels they were unwillingly sent to, where they collect a debt that will bind them to the brothel for many years (if they survive that long.)
Here's the good part. NYF has been saving children in Nepal for quite a few years now. They buy these children out of slavery and provide them with housing, an education and medical care. Most of the time, the rescued go out into the community and raise awareness. Thanks to NYF, it's becoming less acceptable for families to sell their children into indentured servitude, because many people are becoming informed of the sickening reality of what happens to their children.
The best part is that saving these girls is cheap. $100 buys a child out of slavery. With my best friend, I raised over $700. That's seven lives saved from the horrors that "indentured servitude" guarantees.
There are so many things you can do to help. We've put on bake sales, as well as made our own shirts, bracelets and keychains to sell for this charity. Of course you can always donate, as well. Here is a link for more ways to help: http://www.nepalyouthfoundation.org/howtohelp/index.html
