George Bush's Attorney General, Alberto Gonzales, could face criminal prosecution at home and abroad for authorizing torture. So why did Texas Tech University just give him a job?
Tell Chancellor Kent Hance to fire Alberto Gonzales immediately.
Texas Tech University recently announced it is hiring disgraced former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to teach classes and help with student recruitment.
In response, 45 faculty members have sent a letter to the Chancellor calling Gonzales' hiring "objectionable." In the letter they reject the idea that there's a place at the university for a man who enabled some of the worst abuses of the Bush administration.
The faculty letter to Chancellor Hance reminds us that Alberto Gonzales:
Frequently misled or lied to Congress and the American people;
Rejected the Geneva Conventions;
Denied the Constitutional right of habeas corpus; and
Appeared to be more loyal to the President than to the Constitution.
Despite this horrible record, Chancellor Hance has hired Alberto Gonzales -- a man the Chancellor describes as a "good friend"-- for $100,000 a year. What's more, Texas Tech has announced that Alberto Gonzales will teach a class called "Contemporary Issues in the Executive Branch" where he will talk about the "accomplishments" of his tenure at the Department of Justice.
Alberto Gonzales should be disbarred and put on trial for torture, not given a fat salary, a professor's title and a soap box.
Texas AgriLife Extension economists reported last week that this year’s crop losses in Texas are already estimated at $2.6 billion, and livestock losses are close to $1 billion since November 2008. The U.S. Drought Monitor indicated Texas has the most land in the worst stage of drought in nearly a decade.
U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, demanding to know why the $3 billion in emergency drought relief funding, which was approved and signed into law more than one year ago as part of the 2008 Farm Bill, has yet to be released.
In some parts of central Texas, half of the cotton, corn and sorghum crops—Texas’s primary exports—have already been wiped out by the drought. Grazing pastures are too dry for livestock, and many Texas ranchers are being forced to sell their cattle because they cannot feed them.

Don't Let Obama Put Monsanto Cheerleaders in Charge of Food Safety
The Obama Administration is putting two notorious biotech bullies in charge of food safety. Former Monsanto lobbyist Michael Taylor has been appointed as a senior advisor to the Food and Drug Administration Commissioner on food safety. And, rBGH-using dairy farmer and Pennsylvania Agriculture Secretary Dennis Wolff, is rumored to be President Obama's choice for Under-Secretary of Agriculture for Food Safety. Wolfe spearheaded anti-consumer legislation in Pennsylvania that would have taken away the rights of consumers to know whether their milk and dairy products were contaminated with Monsanto's (now Eli Lilly's) genetically engineered Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH).
Alert Update of the Week
Why OCA and Fair Trade Advocates Are Pressuring Whole Foods and UNFI
In response to OCA's recent alerts on Whole Foods Market (WFM) and United Natural Foods Inc. (UNFI), WFM posted out a form letter to many of our readers. Below is a summary of OCA's response, which you can read in greater detail here http://organicconsumers.org/unfi.cfm
OCA Finds WFM and UNFI Guilty of the Following:
* Corporate takeovers and monopolistic practices undermining organics. * Pushing so-called "natural" foods at the expense of organic. * Excluding small and family-scale organic farms. * Marginalizing local and regional producers and brands. * Organic monopolies and the "Whole Paycheck" phenomena. * Selling personal care products misleadingly labeled as "organic." * Selling vitamins and supplements spiked with synthetic chemicals as "natural," "all natural" or "Whole Foods." * Violating labor rights and Domestic Fair Trade principles.

Organic Dairy Farmers Tell Vilsack to Crack Down on Aurora & Horizon's Factory Farm Dairy Feedlots
Last week, USDA Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack spoke at the La Crosse, Wisconsin County Fair. Nearly 200 organic farmers showed up to protest. The farmers, organized by the Cornucopia Institute, rallied to convince Vilsack to take action against factory farms that are saturating the market with fake organic milk, like Aurora and Horizon (Dean Foods). One farmer shouted a question to the Agriculture Secretary, asking when the USDA will take action against organic lawbreakers. "I commit to you that we will enforce the rules," Vilsack responded. The OCA is working hard to make sure this is true.

"Farmers have seen the price for their milk drop from $19.50 per hundred pounds a year ago to less than $11 in June. Meanwhile, Dean Foods' profits climbed from $30 million in the first quarter of 2008 to $76.2 million for the first quarter of 2009."
U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont spoke out on the dairy crisis this week. He has called on the Justice Department to investigate the dairy giant Dean Foods as a monopolist.

Food Toxins 101: An Intro to Hexane
At seven cents per pound, hexane is currently the dominant extraction solvent for soy products. Whether you're eating Boca burgers, firm tofu, partially hydrogenated soybean oil, granola crumbs for texture, or Silk soy milk, hexane likely played a role in the extraction process. Hexane was formerly used as a cleaning agent for removing grease in the printing industry as well as a solvent for rubber cement, but now it's showing up in many so-called "natural" and even "made with organic" soy foods.

It’s going to take a national outcry to block the massacre of hundreds of wolves in Idaho and Montana.
Speak out now against the killing. Add your voice to The Big Howl, NRDC’s rapid-response mobilization campaign.
Dear Kay,
The hunting and mass killing of wolves will begin soon in Idaho and Montana -- and not even wolf pups and their mothers will be spared.
We cannot stand by while this slaughter unfolds. On May 4, the Interior Department stripped wolves of their federal protection, and government agents are now free to open fire.
Even worse: Idaho and Montana will soon launch public hunts targeting wolves. Hundreds of wolves could be gunned down.
When wolves lost their federal protection in 2008, 110 of them were killed in just 120 days!
NRDC is fighting in federal court to save the wolves, but it's critically important the Obama Administration hear directly from outraged Americans like you.
That's why NRDC is expanding "The Big Howl" campaign to mobilize Americans everywhere to save wolves in the Northern Rockies from the crossfire.
Call on Interior Secretary Salazar to reverse his decision to kick wolves off the endangered species list.
This is absolutely the wrong time to rip away federal protections from these struggling wolves. Over the past year, the wolf population in Yellowstone National Park has declined by 27 percent, with more than 70 percent of wolf pups succumbing to disease.
One pack alone lost all 24 of its pups!
With federal protections lifted, wolf pups and their mothers traveling outside national parks will be in the line of fire.
That's why NRDC and our partners filed suit in federal court to block this disastrous policy. But we must do more: we must raise a nationwide outcry that the Obama Administration cannot ignore.
Please call on the Interior Department to go back to the drawing board and submit this cruel plan to the kind of rigorous scientific review the Obama Administration has promised.
Because you have always stood up for wildlife, I'm contacting you now to take part in "The Big Howl" campaign.
After you send your own message, I will let you know about an easy way to spread the word to your friends and family. We need at least one million messages to save the wolves -- so get ready to rally your friends and family to add their own voices to "The Big Howl."
Sincerely, Frances Beinecke President Natural Resources Defense Council
P.S. Hearing the wolf howl after you take action is a poignant reminder of why we must act swiftly to save these treasured icons of the American West. So please speak out today, and then tell everyone you know to take part in "The Big Howl."
Governor Sarah Palin’s announcement last Friday that she will resign within the coming weeks took the world by surprise. In her speech, she directly implied that “heat” from "outside interests" about her predator control practices contributed to her decision.
I can only say that if Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund’s efforts to spotlight Palin’s outrageous aerial slaughter of wolves helped encourage her to resign, we're darned proud of it! And since you helped, you should be proud too.
But now that Palin's out of the governorship, what's next for Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund’s fight to protect Alaska’s wildlife and end the state’s brutal and unfounded aerial wolf killing programs?
Together, we’ve spent the better part of the last two and a half years fighting Sarah Palin’s disastrous mismanagement of Alaska’s wolves, polar bears and other wildlife. And when Senator John McCain tapped Palin as his running mate, no one was more effective than Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund at educating voters about her terrible environmental record.
Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund’s goal has always been to ensure that Alaska’s wolves, bears and other wildlife will be around for future generations to enjoy… and it remains so today.
Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund and our sister organization Defenders of Wildlife are already crafting a new plan to make good use of this opportunity to protect Alaska’s polar bears and beluga whales and to finally end the brutal and unfounded aerial wolf killing programs.
We’ll need your help to protect Alaska’s wildlife in the months ahead, and I hope that we can count on your continued support.
Best Regards,
Rodger Schlickeisen President Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund P.S. Palin’s resignation offers an exciting new opportunity to end her administration’s war on wolves. Please watch your email next week for big news about our Campaign to End the Alaska Wolf Massacre.

The biotechnology firm ArborGen has asked the USDA for permission to conduct 29 field trials of genetically engineered "cold tolerant" eucalyptus trees in the U.S. For the first time in history, this massive experiment, which is on the verge of being green-lighted, will literally be using nature as the laboratory to test more than 260,000 genetically engineered trees. Scientists across the U.S. are voicing concerns over this proposal.
As it did with GE alfalfa, USDA failed to conduct and prepare an Environmental Impact Statement (EI to comprehensively address all the relevant issues related to the proposed eucalyptus field trials. Scientists at Duke University in North Carolina have created pollen models that show tree pollen traveling from a forest in North Carolina for over 1,000 kilometers northward into eastern Canada. A study published in the New Physiologist found pine pollen 600 kilometers from the nearest pines. Scientists researching sterility in trees have admitted that 100 percent guaranteed sterility in GE trees is impossible. This evidence implies that if GE trees are released into the environment, widespread and irreversible contamination of native forests cannot be prevented.
Contamination of natural trees by GE eucalyptus could pose a severe environmental threat. Eucalyptus grow well in warm climates, so engineering them to tolerate cold temperatures removes the only barrier to their unrestricted spread. In some places where eucalyptus have been introduced, they are well known for escaping and colonizing native ecosystems. For example, eucalyptus is listed as an invasive species and a costly plant pest in California. The spread of these plants into the wild through seeds and plant matter is highly likely, and the impacts on native ecosystems from this invader are largely unknown. Additionally, one of the experimental GE tree varieties is a known host for cryptococcus gatti, a fatal fungal pathogen whose spores cause meningitis in people and animals.
Despite recent federal court decisions that USDA failed to address the risk of contamination and other environmental risks from genetically engineered plants, like GE bentgrass and alfalfa, USDA seems poised to push ahead with this dangerous proposal.
A public comment period is open until July 6th, 2009 - please send your comment to USDA APHIS opposing this risky proposal today!
Send a letter to the following decision maker(s): Docket No. APHIS-2008-0059
Below is the sample letter:
Subject: Oppose Docket No. APHIS-2008-0059
Dear [decision maker name automatically inserted here],
Docket No. APHIS-2008-0059 Regulatory Analysis and Development PPD, APHIS, Station 3A-03.8 4700 River Road, Unit 118 Riverdale, MD 20737-1238
Re: USDA/ APHIS Docket No. APHIS-2008-0059
I am strongly opposed to ArborGen's proposal to conduct 29 field trials of experimental genetically engineered eucalyptus trees in the U.S. (APHIS-2008-0059) for the following reasons:
As it did with GE alfalfa, USDA failed to conduct and prepare an Environmental Impact Statement (EI to comprehensively address all the relevant issues related to the proposed eucalyptus field trials.
Eucalyptus species are introduced organisms into the US and grow well in certain warm climates such as the southern and southeast US regions. The main barrier to Eucalyptus becoming established in this region is that the varieties planted often die in cold temperatures. Genetically engineering them to tolerate those cold temperatures removes that barrier. In other regions, where eucalyptus have been introduced, they are well known for escaping and colonizing native ecosystems. Eucalyptus has become so established in California that it is now listed as an invasive species and a plant pest in the state.
Scientists at Duke University in North Carolina have created pollen models that show tree pollen traveling from a forest in North Carolina for over 1,000 kil ometers northward into eastern Canada.
By the agency's own admission, there are several varieties of eucalyptus that are naturally cold-tolerant, at least eight of which could be grown in Southern U.S. states like Alabama. This field trial is not only risky, it is completely unnecessary.
Please deny this request, and require the implementation of a full Environmental Impact Statement.
Sincerely,
Kay Smith

“It can be easy to forget these animals who are locked away and out of sight,” writes Deschanel. “The Great Ape Protection Act is the best chance we have to ease their pain and suffering.”
One thousand chimpanzees in the United States need your help! The Great Ape Protection Act, HR 1326, would finally prohibit invasive research on chimpanzees. But the bill needs more support—and your federal representative has not yet joined the 58 representatives co-sponsoring the bill.
Under the language of HR 1326, which is supported by Democrats and Republicans, chimpanzees could no longer be subjected to “death, bodily injury, pain, distress, fear, injury, or trauma [,]… isolation, social deprivation, or other experimental manipulations…” Chimpanzees owned by the federal government would be released to sanctuaries to live out the remainder of their lives, just as they have been in several other countries.
Chimpanzees suffer from stress and trauma remarkably much like humans. Their needs cannot be met in a laboratory environment. Most chimpanzees in research are kept in isolation, but chimpanzees are naturally social. Their psychological well-being requires group coordination, kinship structure (families being together), and cultural development.
Although chimpanzees are our closest genetic relatives, there are significant differences in how those genes are expressed. And differences between chimpanzees and humans significantly influence responses to drugs and pathogens like viruses and bacteria.
After over two decades of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) research in chimpanzees, there should be no doubt that chimpanzee research has failed to produce an HIV vaccine for humans. Physiological differences between humans and chimpanzees also confound research on human diseases like hepatitis C.
Research funding should be spent on modern testing methods, such as ethical human-centered studies, computer simulation and mathematical modeling, microchip technology, microdosing, in vitro testing, and tissue engineering.
Please call or e-mail your representative and ask her or him to co-sponsor HR 1326!

Hello My friends, I am a member of Change.org I have a fundraiser for Iraq And Afghanistan Veterans of America. Click the link and you can see what we do http://www.change.org/iava/projects/fundraising/americas_heros
Many of our soldiers come back from war and they have to wait over a year to get the medical attention the need. This is for The Soldiers has a petition that is going to go to congress to help our soldiers get the medical attention they need. It doesn't cost anything to watch the video and sign the petition and it will help so many of our veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan get the medical care they need so badly. Please click the link below to take you to This is for The Soldiers. Please forward this to your friends. Thank you and God Bless you!!!
In the next day or so, the U.S. House of Representatives will vote on the boldest effort in our history to rethink how we produce and use energy in this country.
I recorded a video message to describe what's at stake and how we need your help urgently. Take a moment and please watch it.
Some of the smartest ideas on energy and climate -- ones that have been aired by countless hearings in our Capitol over the last two decades -- are finally getting their due in this bill. And it's deserving of our strongest support.
When people said that we couldn't get a bill out of a House committee with a diverse base of support, we proved them wrong. But it wasn't without the work of many people, including members like you.
Today, we need twice that effort. Please watch the video and call your Representative today:
President Obama is trying to put our nation on the fast track to socialized health care, and on June 24, the ABC network will help him sell this bill of goods to the American people.
Next Wednesday, ABC News will transform the White House into their newsroom for what has been described as an unabashed infomercial promoting the Democrat agenda—more specifically, government-run health care.
++ ABC News Emphatically Rejects Opposing Views
ABC News has abandoned all pretense of journalistic integrity in its bid to be the administration’s official salesman for ObamaCare. ABC flatly rejected Republican National Committee Chief of Staff Ken McKay’s request to add opposition views to ensure all sides of the health care debate were represented in the “town hall” forum.
Not only that, ABC News Vice President Kerry Smith responded by saying, “ABC News alone will select those who will be in the audience asking questions of the President.”
As if that wasn’t enough, ABC then rejected an ad from a conservative group trying to counter the liberal health care agenda. They clearly are not interested in a balanced presentation on this subject.
Void of opposing views, this “news special” becomes nothing more than an extended infomercial designed to scare and manipulate the American people into supporting a trillion-dollar government takeover of the highest quality health care system in the world!
++ Hold ABC News Accountable Kay, health care is an issue of life and death. If you don’t want politicians and faceless bureaucrats making your personal health care decisions – which medical procedures you need, which treatments are affordable, which medications you can have – then stand with us and demand the media present a balanced view on how to reform health care.
That’s why we are asking MRC Action team members to do two things TODAY.First, take a moment right now to call ABC News executives and demand balance in the health care debate.Ask them why they won’t allowthe conservative point of view on this show.
Second, click hereto submit questions to be asked at this “town hall” onWednesday – questions the liberal media aren’t asking.Questions like:
·How much will your plan cost?
·How will it be paid for?
·Can you name one example of the government taking over an industry and the costs falling as a result?
Click hereto hear MRC founder Brent Bozell’s exclusive message to the MRC Action team explaining why we all need to act NOW to stop what he calls “one of the worst examples I’ve seen in all my years of observing media bias.”

A firestorm of protest can bring about quick change. That’s why after taking action, we’re asking you to forward this update to 25-30 friends and family members. Let them know what is happening, and how they can play a pivotal role by calling as well.
President Obama has already taken over the banks, and General Motors … now he’s using ABC television to ram his socialist health care plan down our throats unabated. Make your calls, and forward this important message today!
Thank you in advance for taking action with the MRC.
