Hey gang: I am so sorry I have been away so long. To everybody I want to say a happy belated birthday, anniversary, Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving... I am going to try and be more attentive now that things have settled down a little bit and some health issues have gotten resolved. I probably won't be on EVERY night like I used to in the good old days, but I am going to try very hard to be here at least 2 times during the week and once on the weekend. As most of you may or may not know, I run a group called Fun with The Fab Four. It is a group devoted to The Beatles. We have around 30 +/- members, but always looking to expand. Please check out the group and if you are a Beatles fan, please join. Johnny Lennon is my co-moderator and is a fun guy. So please check it out. Once again, sorry for the long absence, but it's great to be back. Cheers! Dr Robert

Name: George Harrison
Type: Memorial (for the deceased)
To Honor: Individual(s)
Location: , United Kingdom
I just finished listening to my Concert for George CD. For those of you unfamiliar with the disc, it was a tribute concert that was recorded on November 29th, 2002, exactly one year after George Harrison passed away.

As I was listening, my mind harkened back to another George Harrison concert event that took place some 30 years earlier on August 1st, 1971; The Concert for Bangla Desh. This was a benefit concert organized by George to raise money for UNICEF to save the starving people of India. This was a first in concert history (as were many things Beatle-related). But then again “first”, “ground-breaking”, “unheard of”, and “ record-breaking” were all terms frequently associated with all things Beatle. This was at a time when musicians were supposed to be mindless, uncaring bottom-feeders who weren’t supposed to have an opinion on world events. George Harrison, as well as his band-mates, were none of these. It was a magical concert and if you get a chance to pick up the re-mastered DVD, please do so.

But I digress.

The Concert for George was organized as a way for many of George’s friends and collaborators to come together and honor him and his music. A few of the rock luminaries on the stage that night had also graced the stage with George at the Bangla Desh concert: Ravi Shankar, George’s spiritual advisor, friend and teacher of the sitar; Eric Clapton, his closest friend and musical collaborator, who had worked on many of George’s Beatle and post-Beatle songs; Ringo, his old band mate and “brother” (Ringo often referring to George as his baby brother); and Billy Preston, (who sadly has now, too, passed), the only artist to ever share billing on a Beatles record. Others on hand to honor George were his son Dhani, heir to the Harrison empire and an accomplished guitarist in his own right; his other former band-mate Paul (and I dare say that had John still been alive, he too would have joined in.); Jeff Lynne, one of the Traveling Wilburys; Tom Petty; Anoushka Shankar,, Ravi’s daughter; and others.

But I once again digress.

As you listen to the CD (or watch the video), and hear as the artists try to meticulously re-create each note perfectly, something comes through other than wonderful versions of amazing songs. And that is the spirit of the songs. George’s music always was thought provoking, heart-felt, soul searching and optimistic. George didn’t always write happy 3 minute fluff songs, but they were always hopeful. Each time I listen to the CD, I hear new things, but there are always “constants” each time I listen. Tom Petty’s version of “I Need You” is so wonderfully done in that you can hear the pain and loss in his voice, transforming a simple love song of the 60’s into a mourning ballad for a lost loved one. Ringo, who sings “Photograph”, a song he co-wrote with George, puts it so well when he says “the meaning has changed now.” Eric’s take on “Beware of Darkness” once again conveys that sense of loss, but underlying it all is a sense of hope. And when Paul sings “All Things Must Pass” you can hear the waiver in his voice as he tries to keep the emotions in check. We all realize that All Things Must Pass, but it is hard when those things or people closest to us do so. And throughout the concert, one cannot help but feel the joy, love, admiration and longing for George.

It is a loving tribute to “The Quiet One”. Although he was not as prolific a songwriter as Paul or John, his songs were always magnificent, with such amazing guitar work and lyrical artistry.

I never cried when George passed away, unlike when John died, when I could not be consoled. Today as I was listening to “All Things Must Pass”, I broke down in tears and realized how much I missed him, as well as John. As I approach the ripe age of 50, I never thought that half of the greatest band in the world would be gone before I reached that milestone. Celebrities are like your favorite pet sometimes, you wish they could live forever or you could freeze them in a moment in time to relive that feeling whenever you want. Sadly, we can’t do that, so we must occasionally dust off the old LPs, crank the stereo up and remember the joy that their music brought to us All Those Years Ago.

If so, join the group secret friends.

Every few weeks, the host, Carolyn, will assign another member to you and you get to "spoil" them with virtual gifts, goodies, pictures, pets, .....WHATEVER STRIKES YOUR FANCY! And while you are spoiling someone, someone else in the group is spoiling you with surprises.

The hardest part of the whole thing is that you will have to set up an email account to send and recieve your gifts so that you remain anonymous. But it will be worth it, because it is just so much fun.

And when you join, let Carolyn know that Robert O invited you.

Thanks and I hope you join. Who knows, I may be your secret friend and get to spoil YOU!

Please help the fate of ferrel cats in your area. My sweet Maggie Moo was a stray that found us. When we adopted her, she was weak and undernourished. We took her home, got her to a vet and made sure she was healthy. We had her spayed, even though we were going to keep her as an indoor cat. Deb and I can't imagine life without this 10 pound bundle of love. Please read the following and sign the petition at the end. Thank you.

Please take the time to read the story!! It's worth it and was like a miracle before my eyes and others involved in this program. IT WORKS.....!!!! IT WORKS!!! PLEASE SIGN THE PETITION....WE can fix the feral cat problem and so easily... PLEASE READ THE STORY!!! I'm a terrible writer but it works and I wish it was publicized where I live in Upstate NY. THIS IS THE FIX/ANSWER.... No more complaining and wasting time arguing about it. Just get this plan into action where you live.
PLEASE CARE,
Kym Cree
Thanks

Three years ago in a 25 mile radius were over 100 stray.feral/kicked out,etc... cats. There were the typical 25 or so regulars that hung out by my home having litter after litter. It was just ongoing. Several of us who fed and cared for these strays,etc... all got together with a rescue group that was willing to do the spay/neuter Trap & Release.
I wish someone in power could see the "HUGE" difference. 3 years ago this winter we started. There have been NONE/NOT ONE spotting of one litter by any of 12/13 people have seen and we look. I'm sure somewhere there are a few litters but if seen we will do the same thing. A vet offered their services free of charge but there are ways around that with no money involved even if the vet didn't do it free. I think they offered because many of these cats ended up dropped off at their office and left anyway. They never killed any of the ones dropped off .They have a huge heart and put them up for adoption. **** The vet said in 6 months they did this to over 100 feral cats.**** Well at the 2 1/2 yr mark no one has seen even the 25 or so regulars except 4 that are spayed/neutered but cannot be placed. We do take care of them. It took me an average of 4 months to get the cats to know me but many of these cats ended up being very friendly and were able to be placed. I know in the last 5 years I have personally found homes for at least 20 feral ,stray or whatever cats. I've lost  track after 20 and the majority ended up being indoor cats not allowed out with a few exceptions that went to farms wanting them. All homes are visited and checked over every 2-3 months.

I wish this was publicized because it works...!!! It's so easy and the difference in a short period of time is remarkable....... After they are spayed/neutered the vets in my area would always clip a tiny part of their left ear always in a straight line across so people/vets/Rescue groups would know they have been through the program and spayed /neutered. The vets found while under anesthesia that clipping the top of the ear was the least painful option and none even seemed bothered by it.
The point is that this works and quickly....!! The cats wont live forever . Many are not as feral as they start out to be and end up making wonderful pets. They just need patience and a taste of what being an indoor cat can be like. They see the perks and the food of course helps.

As you all know, I am a huge Beatles fan. I have put together a pictorial tribute to George on my group page. He would have been 63 years old on 2/25.

http://www.care2.com/c2c/groups/disc.html?gpp=6879&pst=390020&archival=

Please take a look and take a minute to send loving thoughts to George and John.

Cheers.
