The Purple Ribbon Champagne

I have been making purple and black ribbons to pass out to my family and friends.  I have also passed them out at the Rallies and Speak Outs which I have organized for Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention Month which is in October.

 

I tied purple and black ribbon together (you could also use yarn), into tiny bows.  I attached a safety pin to each one so it can easily and safely be pinned onto clothing.  It is amazing how many people ask "What is the purple ribbon for?"  Then you can spread the word!  This is a simple way to Do Something! 

 

*The purple ribbon represents the survivors of abuse.  The black is to remember those who did not survive.

 

I had a vision that if everyone who read this email would tie purple and black ribbons onto their trees what an awesome statement that would make!

Hello Stop Family Violence Activists!

Earlier this month, the President released his budget request to Congress.  For the sixth year in a row, President Bush’s budget request falls far short of the amount of spending Congress authorized for the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). Overall, his budget proposal provides only 54% of authorized funding levels for lifesaving domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking and dating violence programs - and several programs would receive no funding at all!

The following programs are all severely underfunded - some have never been funded at all.

  • Assisting Children Who Witness Violence
  • Sexual Assault Services
  • Shelters and Services
  • Elder Abuse and Abuse of People with Disabilities
  • Civil Legal Assistance
  • Grants to Reduce Violence on College Campuses

YOU CAN HELP!! TELL US YOUR STORIES!!

Visit www.stopfamilyviolence.org/430 to learn more about these lifesaving programs and to tell us your stories about why these programs matter to you.

If you are a survivor or a service provider, tell us your personal stories about how funding in these program areas did or would make a difference, or tell how not having funding for these programs has placed lives in jeopardy. Help them understand how critical these life-saving programs are. (your personal stories can be anonymous)

We will compile your stories into a booklet that will be hand-delivered to congressional offices.

Soon we'll be set up for you to contact Congress directly, but first we wanted to get working on our booklet. We'll be going door to door in April to urge legislators to provide funding for these and other important VAWA programs, and we'd like to have your stories to take with us.

PLEASE PASS THIS MESSAGE ON TO OTHERS so that we can gather as many voices as possible.  Help us build our movement, until the hear us loud and clear.
